- With an Initial - $50 - Budget & a few tools I set out to build my own small boat design. I was sceptical at first if it could be done, but attempted this anyway.
Not A How To... This is a "How I Did" Video. No plans were created for this boat & the construction of this vessil was figured out as I went along.
This design allows you a small wood/fiberglass boat for around $50! That beats most small boat designs out there, Total weight after construction was around 45-50 pounds for the boat itself, Additional 15 LBS if you construct the floor.
Outrigger & Motor going on soon in Part 2!
Surfing around and stumbled on this vid. Thought "oh yeah... this will be plenty stupid!" Watched the whole thing. Annndddddddd...... now I want to build one. Damn. Nice little boat, nice vid (except for the Bush/Cheney '04 part, of course!)
This individual is the kind of crazy I like...Good Crazy!
That oar is genius!
The fact you got your missus in shows how good it is.
Wholesome fun build. Well done some excellent techniques there.
Interesting? Im a boater ,( 40' sailboat ), and have lived on the water in my boat for a long time. Ive seen many types of boat and dinghys. I worked as fleet maintenance for a marine rescue and salvage co.
Some ideas i have for you wiuld be to add a keel and some skegs so your vessel will point and track while rowing rather than be prey to the wind or go in circles while rowing.
Also there's a good cheep pamphlet on fiberglass techniques at west marine by west system.
Also maybe use wire to stitch the bow.
And finally use marine grade plywood and paint the sheet with epoxy before adding the fiberglass until the wood stops soaking up the epoxy. This will prevent the delamination that will probably happen to your vessel over time.
I enjoyed the vid.
I love experimenters and the spirit of thinking outside of the box.
P.S. balance audio on the next vid. The guitar was way louder than your voice.
Cheers!
If you had an attention span longer than 5 minutes you'd see he addressed most of that. Including the marine plywood when he said he wanted to see how cheap he could do it. I'm a Newfoundlander, saltwater is what we do, and most of the builders around town couldn't get "marine plywood" until 20 years ago or so and lasted for years as fishing boats on the Grand Banks. I still don't know many who do use it if they know how to use fibreglass... Sailing and cleaning a boat don't qualify you as a builder my friend!
@@ec6052 well bless your heart. I bet you have so many friends🤔
@blahahtheelder4343 Thanks for the useless response 👍
I love your style! 👍🏻
Wider flat bottom is much much more stable even with sail added
Omg that hull shape looks like it’s gonna roll!
Very good!! Following the project.
Thanks!
Part 2 will be coming out soon!
I can feel the ghost of Ray Eames smiling down on your work. She was the pioneer of "tortured ply" in Venice CA in and after ww2.
Turned out pretty sweet man
Thanks! I appreciate the help as well, was not easy to build. Lol
I think this was a great experiment. I subscribed and look forward to seeing your outrigger.
There is a boat designer on YT that made a 10 foot boat and for stability, he added inflatable tubes on the side and bow of his boat. His design is called the Duo.
Nice work
Great little boat and it's well made
Ha! That was great fun. Two words: Initial stability.
You thought a cylindrical bottom was going to be stable? As soon as I saw you bend that plywood. I knew it was going to be very tippy..That is why there are so many small flat bottom boats. I watched another video where they did about the same thing to build a bathtub. Now that you have the boat building bug. I suggest your next boat should be a cajun pirogue. Stable flat bottom. Easy to do with one sheet of plywood. Fun as all get out.
going to do a kayak this way!
great work
Life jackets for ALL please! Great project though, very creative.
That's great idea!!!
Ok, I want one, 😆 but a little different.
Nice project and good job
It’s awesome, we can build one here in Brazil!!
It would probably work great!
Could use if for casting a net or to tow behind a fishing boat
Cool accent, I used to have a friend named CHip with the same accent
very top congratulations
Great work, Now how about some quick measurement's & simple plans with material guide ?
4X8 sheet of cheap-o Ply from hardware store. Polyester Resin and hardener. Short screws. Wood scraps from construction dumpster late at night. Some beer ....
looking forward to part 2. not sure i could build that for 50$ .
Yea. A sheet of plywood is about $35, that tin of epoxy is close to $50, the fiberglass is another $50. At best, you could build this for $150, assuming you already had all the tools and a bunch of scrap wood and other materials. And that's just for the hull. Don't forget paint, engine, sail rigging, oars/oarlocks, fixtures, etc. I'm currently building something like this, and it's WAY more expensive than any of the posts I've found for the same design. It's basically "$50 boat, assuming you already bought 90% of the materials!"
niceley done and wondering if it is still a thing, you and your family cherish.
Not bad kudos
That’s awesome
That's the least stable boat I've ever seen! Still, looks like lots of fun building it!
É um talento Deus abençoe 🙏👏👏👏
Two adults and two little ones. Pretty good for a one-sheeter.
You said and outrigger
We'll make one on a hinge that's telliscopic
For compactability
And a small solar power radio for fishing
Part 2 outrigger?
The most brilliant part was the dustpan paddle.
That might just be the worst fiberglassing job I've ever seen 😂 but I totally enjoyed the video. Great build.
Really? How are you supposed to do fiberglass so that it’s perfect?
I really don’t know.
@@zachsheffee8458 Get a helper with a detail paint roller. Stretch and tape the cloth straight and tight. Use a fresh rubber squeegee. Plenty of room for improvement here.
Awesome!
what kind of plywood did you use? and how thick?
Thanks so much for sharing this!
I love the "no perfection allowed" method 🤘😅
Have much luck fishing the Kinni there?
I've always meant to try it out
Good luck with the outriggers BTW.
For a version 2 I might use Integraply and make a seam all the way down the sides so more of the base is left flat.
Though what I'd really love to see is a 1 man pontoon made in this fashion 😉
Building by instinct is the only way to go...! No need for plans, Lol
The Kinni is a really good trout stream, but you need to fish early season to get the big ones.
The outriggers are on & I think they actually turned out really good! Will test them out this weekend & see how they work. 🤞
A pontoon is a really good idea actually! I was also contemplating a larger canoe with 2 of these small boats attache back to back, for 2 people.
Thanks for watching!!
It is like you decided to reinvent stitch and glue boatbuilding without looking at what other folks have done with it since the 1970's.
What type of resin did you use?
I heard this is based on a true story.
I wondered about that round bottom.
make another one and bolt the two back to back and wind up with a canoe.
You will increase stability if you add a couple skegs on the bottom
brilliant original idea....apart from 100000 other videos
Cool😎
What happened to part 2?
I think it was more like 16 inches of water not 6 inch, your dog was in half way up his body and he's not a little dog, nice job building the boat, I've never seen that method before
Great
Could just cut a 55gl barrel in half long ways lol
Now fill it with foam and go down some rapids!😎
I will see if I can find any class 5 rapids nearby! Lol
That would make a good video
@@tuffsewingeverything7030 do it!😎🏆
$50 is the budget his wife gave him!!
Where’s part 2? I want to do the same thing!!!
You want to build this? Why? I mean, why? Why not build a good one?
@@learningwithlyricsandsongs not for me. For the kids to mess with so they leave my much nicer one alone 😁
Need your voice volume up and music down.
Homemade boat with a round bottom? Not very stable idea don't you think? Then put your kids and wife in it with no life jackets, then let'r go. Brilliant!
Ficou bom, mas faltou a quilha e o barco ficou circular e tem que ser retangolar
This would actually cost you at least $130!!
2021 version: $300
Its fail, its half cycle... It Wil not stable,..swaying left to right and so on
dude, someone made full size yacht by using a sheet of steel like origami
Hey, please provide dimensions of this boat LxWxH.
$50? You can'y buy a sheet of ply with that let alone the epoxy or glass mat
incorrect, look for "meranti luan", look that it has the PINK glue between the laminates (3 core plus 2 skins 5 layers total about 6 mm thick). its about 11 bucks a sheet, the pink glue passes the boil test really nicely.
if you want to continue with the cheap theme, use "PMF" (poor man's fiberglass) for your covering, is bed sheet cloth and type2 or type3 wood glue, before the paint.
Need buoy on side for not to flip that boat
As father how could put your kids in that boat with NO LIFE JACKETS!
You cant build a boat that light with round bottom.
Ill give you $50 and you buy me the materials that you used . I'll assemble and cut myself. Crazy how inexpensive the materials are where you are.
Builds $50 boat for $300.
Слишком круглое дно... Лодочка для любителей купаться...
Now tell the truth you use more the one sheet of plywood.
Joke
That is not a considerate father and mother and saying," I got it", is not good enough. No parents should ever do that.
