    I’ve noticed a lot of people on TikTok are praising Luigi Mangione mostly for his looks, and while that’s understandable, I feel like it’s overshadowing the real purpose behind what he did. He was trying to open people’s eyes to the problems in the healthcare system and inspire action. It’s important we don’t lose sight of that message because the issues he highlighted really need attention. I’m glad he spoke out, and I hope more people focus on the change he’s advocating for. Not some stupid tik tok edits.

    • @pepsi6356
      @pepsi6356 วันที่ผ่านมา +97

      I think a lot of the TikTok’s editing his looks is kinda satirical, it’s their weird way of making fun of the NYPD and other parts of the government. Especially when you see how bad the police and FBI want us to hate this man, TikTok turns around and says “he still looks hot with piss in his pants”. There are actually many others on TikTok who’ve looked into the symbolisms and messages of his crime. From the Monopoly money, to the carving on the bullets, to his manifesto. The platform just limits them a bit more than TH-cam where you can make a 2 hour video commentary. Their message is still there though; the lower class has gotten tired of the treatment. (I still really like your take though! I just think TikTok has a different way of taking part in spreading his message!) :)

    • @dllfaece
      @dllfaece วันที่ผ่านมา +21

      Thank you for sharing your perspective. I now have a better understanding of the situation from TikTok’s side as well. That being said, I don’t think the NYPD is particularly concerned with the TikTok edits of Luigi Mangione. It seems more like a trend that, in a few weeks, people will likely move on from, just like they did with the Menendez brothers’ case. I don’t have anything against anyone, but it’s unfortunate that many, especially younger people, may not take the time to understand the seriousness of the situation. :(

      I don't use TikTok but his profile including his good looks, is significant: he's good looking, wealthy, white, well educated, and as far as we know straight, no history of drug use or mental illness. He's the worst nightmare for the wealthy class, bc they can't direct the public's anger to any minoritized group. He not only is a reflection of them, he looks like the best of the best among them.

      @@enidmrtnz5315 So typing behind the compute is the modern day equivalent of gathering around the well to spread the news with your fellow residents. This absolutely DOES help bolster things and start the pressure into civil unrest. While it's "just" talking now, "just talking" will eventually lead to "I've also had enough of this" and people rallying against the problem. The real question is: will the government try to prevent the civil unrest from magnifying by stomping down on the healthcare giants or will they fumble this situation and allow the civil unrest to ramp up.
      If you're wondering how well "just talking online" does for citizens fighting things: check out the recent upsets in the gaming community (how gamers utterly destroyed Concord, how Steam is finally setting boundaries on companies to prevent more Early Access pocket leeches, etc.). All sorts of sudden changes are happening across the gaming industry in small waves BECAUSE people have been complaining loud enough and long enough online to convince each other to start voting with their wallets (stop buying products for the companies fucking up). The difference there is: gaming is a luxury item which you can go without while Healthcare is a 'luxury' item that you really do need. Its much easier to refuse to pay for games to punish that industry than it is to go without the insurance you need to live.

Finally he was rushed to the ER (in an ambulance), a couple hours later he came home sensitive to all light, refused to eat, in chronic pain. They told him he was having stress induced migraines. Again, another ambulance, another traumatizing call. He would be brain dead 3 days later and by the 5th he would pass at 48 yrs old from a brain aneurysm (bleeding in the brain).. only to be told that if it was caught days earlier he would’ve lived. I’m eternally grateful for my doctor of 22 years who’s always fought for me with my insurance company (which happens to be United. Go figure?) I'm not an expert on American healthcare system, and I don't condone violence, but it seems to me that with predatory system like America has, where insurance companies can deny people health coverage to people who have worked their whole lives while rich CEO's make ten million dollar a year, incidents like this are bound to happen. There is only so much bullying average, working class people will take before they snap. Healthcare should not be exploited for profit.

      @SomeoneIusedtoknow-s1f 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +77

      Yup. Being high up in companies are stressful, but rarely life threatening and typically no more stressful than everyone else's jobs. You can make enough as a CEO oftentimes that if you invested a few million many people could get enough back from investing to live an average or better middle-class or high middleclass lifestyle. Meanwhile, most middle-class have to work 40+ hours a week, in jobs that take a massive toll, sometimes extremely dangerous jobs that pay poorly and have crap healthcare, and the CEO makes his/her money off the backs of everyone under them that can often struggle just to afford basic living expenses and healthcare.
      Our system also rarely allows CEOs to come about from nothing. You're not likely in America to go from a beef pusher to a CEO, you typically have to have a great start in life to actually get high up to begin with.
      It irritates me that people don't see how bad it is to funnel the majority of American money into the CEOs and top members of companies while the bottom rungs suffer.

I live on the other side of the world, a third world country where people like me could only dream about earning average income in the US but can easily have access to basic medical assistance/treatment for almost free makes me feel so relieved that I was born here. It is sooooooo much worse than just the insurance side. I was an EMT and surgical tech before becoming disabled. Consider trickle down economics. If the insurance company controls how much the hospital receives, it's the hospital CEOs that control cost saving policies that your nurses, techs, and caregivers have to execute and how much money they recieve after taking their cut and paying the doctors and investors.
      We have physician owned hospitals that sound good in concept but what happens is groups of doctors will get together to open their own hospital. Think about how wrong things can go when your doctor is the arbiter, salesmen, CEO, and shareholder.
      Your nurses and techs are the ones punished if they provide you more care than your insurance will pay back. It's the lowest people on the totem pole that have to carry out these policies.
      And we are also FORCED to use whichever insurance provider the hospital decides. So after being overworked, pressured to rush surgeries, and under insured, we wind up broke and disabled. I was fired while recovering from my 11th surgery which was ironic cuz I worked in the OR that did my surgery. My surgical team were my coworkers. I've been without health insurance ever since. Been 6 years and my condition will kill me within 10 with treatment - much sooner without. I still need extensive surgery but I can't even afford the $250 doctor appointment or the $20,000 blood work. And that's just the initial exam 😂 💀
      I stopped tracking my medical debt after the first two times I was sued for unpaid medical bills. Still above 50k. The craziest part is the hospitals sell your debt to collectors. So they get a portion of your debt paid by the buyer and write the rest off as a loss or charity to get the tax cuts. Meanwhile, your debt gets sold from one company to a next while you get harassed and sued. So multiple businesses profit off your medical debt while you are held liable.

Meanwhile literally 2 days ago there was a school shooting in the same state & that person who killed children wasn’t labeled as a “terrorist” but instead “one with mental health issues”. America will always label those who know the truth as terrorist but when it comes to a school shooter/shooter towards pocs they would give them the mental health card. Kyle rittenhouse is a perfect example. As an American who’s seeing this all unfold since I was a kid. It’s scary cause ik the government doesn’t support us & would rather see us die to protect their buck.💔 (sorry for the trauma dump😭😭).

    As someone who woke up mid surgery, you are absolutely right. You feel everything, hear everything, and your mind screams one thing as you desperately try to gain control of your body.
    In my case, I couldn’t speak through my whimpering so my sole focus was hitting the doctor, stopping the pain as he cut my flesh, with my free hand. They discussed whether or not I was awake while I cried, whimpered and unsuccessfully flung my arm until it got onto my lap. Halfway to the doctor. Only then did they correct their mistake and put me under. I still have nightmares about it.
    What makes it worse, I have a long history of immunity to anesthesia. We talked about it at our initial consult, check in, and the day of. Due to my stress over it, they prescribed me an anti anxiety drug pre surgery. But they didn’t take my history seriously, and my worst fear came to fruition, and I’m haunted by it. To this day, I haven’t stepped foot into another doctors office. I hate them, I hate it.
    When I was the news about blue anthem, it freaked me out. I know it’s a little different than my situation, but to limit coverage of anesthesia is evil. Fuck our healthcare system. It’s so dystopian.

    I am still a new nurse and working in a surgical floor I am exposed to a lot of these people getting back/spine surgeries, etc. As much as it can be overwhelming when you have 4 patients asking for narcotics back to back, it shows how debilitating chronic nerve pain and neuropathy is. It’s not just affecting people physically, but also mentally. From just having physical symptoms, it branches to psych and other aspects of health. Just like Steph mentioned, pulling your hair out, scratching your skin until it bleeds, behavioral issues such as agitation. Spine surgeries are tough. It’s either you feel better right away or you are worse and have a longer way to go in recovery, or you get multiple surgeries just to feel better. Some even need to stay in an inpatient rehab and have long term PT/OT needs. I hope this event changes healthcare for the better. Not having access to essential care and services when you are paying for it is torture.

She took care of everyone, delivered them on day one and cared for them until they had their own children - who she also delivered. She provided all the sports physicals and worked all the football and basketball games, answered her phone 24/7 and loved every one of her patients. Until United Health bought the closest hospital, and then systematically forced almost every private practitioner into selling their practices to UHC, and then closed most of them down. So, the ER doctor done what he had to do and got me to surgery. I ended up in the hospital for 4 days and it was about a 2 month recovery. About 2 weeks after getting home I get a letter from united health care explaining that they had denied the ER's doctor's request to do surgery on me and they would not be paying for any of my hospital bill. But I didn't have to pay for it because the doctor done the surgery knowing they won't pay for it. I had no insurance.... got to the e.r. around 7pm on a Wednesday had emergency surgery around 10pm, and at 5pm Thursday hospital personnel wheeled me out in a wheelchair, left me sitting outside waiting for someone to pick me up, I was still drowsy from pain medicine and they hadn't even informed me that I was being discharged until they were coming in with the wheelchair to wheel me out so my ride was still 40 minutes away! I couldn't believe the way they treated me there. For example my country (SE Asia) is no doubt corrupt, but many poor people still can get free treatment from headache to cancer surgery by using government health insurance (although the facility is almost abysmal and waiting list is quite long). Some EU countries policies are really good, sure they have big tax, but they wouldn't ever be bankrupt because of an accident or birth, and they also get free education and pension, not to mention their work life balance.

    Hello, I am an emergency physician actively working in Turkey. I serve in a small village of 5,000 people, and as soon as a patient arrives, I begin the diagnostic and treatment process within 10 minutes. In critical situations, such as a heart attack, I can detect it and coordinate with a cardiologist to prepare for an angioplasty, including securing an operating room, all within less than an hour. Moreover, if you are employed, retired, or even working in the private sector, you don’t pay a single penny out of pocket for this care.
    Growing up, I always imagined the United States as the most developed country in the world. However, seeing the state of its healthcare system is deeply disappointing. Once, I dreamed of taking the USMLE and becoming a resident in the U.S., but the realities of its system, shaped by capitalism, show a harsh and heartbreaking side.
    I hope that one day, people around the world will understand the beauty of a socialist system. Despite the many problems in my country, knowing that I can visit a doctor anytime I feel even slightly unwell and receive the most necessary and high-quality care without any financial burden is truly a comforting thought.

      These are my thoughts exactly. I grew up always hearing America being called the land of the free, but now I see people having their rights taken away, the healthcare system is completely useless and everything is shaped by capitalism.
      Germany isn't really doing well politically right now, there is a resurgence of populist right wing politics and the AfD (who are partially confirmed to be right extremists and/or national socialists) are gaining a huge amount of votes. If it keeps going this way I might lose my rights too. I don't know their stance on health care but I know that they don't care about human rights, and that, if they had it their way, trans people would not be able to afford gender affirming care.
      I have always been glad to live in a country with free health care and I am so scared that we might end up like the US. It's unrealistic, but everything is just awful right now and even with all the signs we get, the people in power are still mot doing enough to stop climate change, there's wars about shit that is not worth killing for and humans can't seem to be decent, like, ever
      All we can do is to keep fighting and be visible, make our voice heard and protest against those who abuse their power
      (This is just a long ramble sry lol)

      @@cintiac1830 Those CEO systematically HELP far more people than they harm. Seriously you shouldn't comment if you're so ignorant of how the system works and how LITTLE insurance companies actually make. Their margins are insanely small (2-3%) and if they granted every request they would go under in less than a day. So the balance is needed, an impossibly hard job. But someone has to do it.
      Either an insurance company does it where you have some control over your options and some competition or the government does it and you have no choice at all. No options to move or change your coverage ect.
      People need to wake up a realize life isn't perfect and there are always tradeoffs. People in these tough jobs have to make the tradeoffs and they do it according to what's best for MOST people knowing some people will get screwed.
      It's like in triage when there are TOO many patients they flip it they move on from those who have little change of making it why? Because trying to save that one person would take the resources, time and personal that could be used to save these 4 others also critical injured but not as badly. The choice always has to be made. SO when overwhelmed they go to a model called quality life years.
      In complete overwhelm situations they try and save as many quality life years as possible which means if they only can treat 1 patient on a machine and one is 74 and one is 15 they treat the 15 year old. HARSH but they have to to make a choice. They don't have two machine and insurance companies are no different they don't have more resources to give.

Currently going through a legal case and what do you know! Our insurance wants to take a large sum of possible monetary that’s meant for us, for their own sake because it was “use of important hospital equipment”. Im talking LARGE SUM OF MONEY. I'm not from the US but my best friend is and I won't forget how much she cried to me on our discord call because their health insurance was denied multiple times. Her mother had a severe stroke which caused some memory loss and apraxia (a neurological disorder that makes it difficult to perform learned movements or tasks, even though the person wants to do them and is able to.)
    She's like a sister to me so I took out a loan for her and sent her money. That didn't cover everything with how much expensive hospital bills are in the US but I won't ever let her feel that hopeless again. They are raised by their single mom so as the oldest, she acted like a second mother to her siblings. She wasn't able to finish university so she can look after them, do cooking and house chores, and to start working part time to help their mom who was working full time. It was so heart wrenching and devastating hearing her break down but thankfully she was able to pay the rest from the help of other family members, neighbours, her and her mom's coworkers and friends. Til this day, her mother still have difficulty doing tasks but she is getting better. I'm just glad that she didn't lose her mom because I know how much that would torn her apart.

      In September, my sister in law was still pregnant. It was predicted that she supposedly gave birth normally early September, but until 2 weeks later, nothing. We're all worried, so we moved the hospital to the private one in the city (more pricey one), the doctor suggested we do caesarean. Cause the baby was big and the doctor worried that once her water dried, it would be even more dangerous. So we did. We're worried about the cost, my brother has the national insurance for his family. And they paid almost zero...though it was in a private hospital.

    I've been dealing with the United States healthcare system since June 2023, when a car accident should have killed me, but I was able to crawl out of a broken window backwards with the right side of my body was completely useless. The car caught on fire minutes later, I was only able to crawl out due to my fitness routine and being in the gym five days a week. Between health and disability insurance companies, the entire process has been a nightmare and both have gotten in the way of doctors fully helping me. I've had 4 surgeries and 9 or so different operations during those surgical settings and could have two more surgeries (hopefully not, my last one is in October and that may be it). It's been a tough process and I'm in regular and EMDR therapy to cope and have yet been cleared to start physical therapy. I covered our system for several years, and was hoping Sanders would become POTUS to solve this crisis, but here we are still dealing with this needless horror.
    If we (the United States) weren't the only first world nation on the planet without Universal Healthcare, Luigi wouldn't have ever been in the position to do this. Sure, shooting a CEO who willingly abuses the system isn't the answer, but there is no reason beyond dark money in politics and voters being blinded by 'team sports' rather than popular issues that help the country as to why the US didn't create a Universal Healthcare system at least 70 years ago. Change needs to happen now, real people are suffering and many politicians have turned a blind eye.

      Yes. Exactly yes. Our country built a system that vastly allows the well off to continue getting the few high up jobs in our country. And the majority of American money goes to those high up jobs. When in reality, we still have bad unhealthy and dangerous job positions that are the backbone of our country, and often the pay and insurance isn't good enough to even handle all of life's needs, plus insurance and healthcare, plus therapy, and still allow for regular leisure, family, and self care. But don't worry, countless ceos and other high ups get extremely high pay, rarely have to risk their lives and wellness and health, and often brag about their private jets, mansions, vacation retreats and more. While the heaviest lifting gets paid diddly squat in comparison.

      Luigi’s act was not just an isolated incident but a wake-up call, highlighting the need for more courageous individuals to stand against the global systems of exploitation and oppression. Across the world, the powerful elite tighten their grip on resources, labor, and freedom, creating a reality where the majority suffer under their rule. True change has always required brave people willing to take risks, disrupt the status quo, and defy those who enforce injustice. Without such acts of defiance, the cycle of inequality and control will continue unchallenged, leaving humanity trapped in an endless spiral of suffering.

      She did such a great job on this. The brain fog part alone is so important for social comprehension. I have several types of chronic pain and residual gastrointestinal damage from a hospital acquired infection, osteoporosis caused by nerve disease etc etc. And of course the sleep disorders and anxiety related issues that accompany chronic illness. Chronic pain and disability are not simple. They are complex and take comprehensive, far reaching, compassionate care that is tailored to the individual. And for most people illness is progressive - once it begins, it's like an avalanche. Or one of those closet collapse scenes in movies and you are at the bottom trying to function. That's all you are doing every day, your level best to stay afloat so to have bureaucrats tell you that you should experience something you don't or fit into a margin, say with people who don't also have x, y and Z conditions mucking up their immune systems and their logic. Being sick sucks more than being sick. It's beyond stressful and annoying. My "primary condition" is nicknamed the suicide disease because the pain is not manageable. Or rather, it is not managed. That is not okay. Human beings suffer unnecessarily far, far too much.

This was after I had to file a complaint with the state because during my pregnancy I was treated poorly by managers demanding overtime, demanding I fulfilled certain quotas when my Medical Doctor had cleared me to not work full time, or sit for longer periods of time for the health of my baby. They didn’t care and because I complained and reported them with the state they retaliated by putting me on the chopping block for lay offs. Then they intimidated me to sign my lay off or I wouldn’t get paid off. Right as I held my new born of 9 days. I had no job and if I didn’t sign I wouldn’t have no money. My brother had his jaw bone cut into to extract his wisdom teeth (they never erupted from the bone) as pieces of bone hit the back of his throat from the surgery...
    And he was awake the whole time. Because our insurance deemed it medically unnecessary to have anesthesia during the procedure. Now he has severe PTSD of needles and the dentist and has never went back. Oh, and our insurance wouldn't pay for an actual oral surgeon either: only a dentist, which doesn't have the same schooling to do such procedures. So who knows if it was done properly.
    I work in the dental field now (orthodontics) and have for many years now.
    It hurts my heart that insurances tell us that certain children and adults do not have coverage, unless it is "medically necessary." Yet, these people suffer every day with TMJ, eating issues, breathing problems, etc due to malformations and misalignment of the bite and teeth. You're telling me it's not necessary??? And this minor stuff; not even life saving surgeries that are denied every day, leading to death.

      Also I had the same thing done and have permeant damage and I only got sedatives (like nearly everyone else) and I am just fine. So your brother being an outlier doesn't change the fact that putting people under isn't standards for the costs and RISKS.

      @@LizThomas-dp7srShilling for big insurance after admitting you had permanent damage from a procedure is strange. You’re ‘fine’ because you accept this crappy system. It doesn’t matter how small their profits are, the system shouldn’t even exist! 🤦 Whether we receive proper medical care is decided by the predatory healthcare industry, how is that justifyable? Why is our healthcare at the whim of these insurance companies that have zero knowledge of medical issues and are only worried about their bottom line? 2-3%? They will deny more claims just to reach 4%. That is even more of a reason to oppose it. Who are you to say it’s not necessary?? Not every patient is the same. If anesthesia was offered to this patient for this procedure then it has probably been deemed medically necessary for some patients in the past, and the doctor was likely on board. Also, they literally said that insurance wouldn’t pay for an oral surgeon either, so a dentist without the proper experience did the procedure. And obviously the dentist did something wrong. Do you think that having a proper specialist who is trained to perform the operation you need is not ‘medically necessary’? If you want to settle for horrible health care that left you permanently damaged then that’s fine, but don’t expect everyone else to be happy with that
