David Gilmore is one of the most masterful soulful guitarists in rock music. His legendary ability to evoke and encompass the full range of human emotion with his guitar playing makes him one of the best guitarists ever. He makes you feel every cord, note, bend and slide. His tone is incredible and what he plays is so perfectly arranged. He is not a shredder or an overly technical guitarist, and he doesn't play a ton of notes but, he makes everything he plays count.
Pink Floyd...by far the best live show I’ve ever seen in my life. The music, the lasers and lights, the overall atmosphere. There is legit nothing like it and after they retire for good, there never will be again.
I really like your reaction videos. Most vocal coaches pause every 2 seconds. You really enjoy listening to the music and don't fixate on every single detail of the vocal performance and it's really a relief
I was in a motorcycle accident in 2012 and had to have surgery to repair 2 bones in my arm. As I was wheeled from recovery to my bed, I turned the tv on and Comfortably Numb was playing. I will never forget that moment!
This song is one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever heard. And the live versions seem especially powerful and charged with emotion. One of my all time favorite Pink Floyd songs.
David Gilmour the only man that can walk on stage dressed like a plumber and rip out the most amazing guitar licks with such ease its incredible .... i can say i was lucky enough to see them live July 6th 1994 at the CNE Grand Stand Toronto Canada for the Division Bell tour Row c seat 39 the cost was $42.50 and i still have the concert stub today
I can tell you Im one of the guys that picked up the guitar to play the solos of this song. 😂 There are alot of us out here. Truly an inspiring performace
David was my influence for picking up a guitar. I can play his stuff and I can play stuff from people who are considered more complicated guitarists (Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker etc) but I still go back and still enjoy playing David's solo's. He just had a way of making the guitar presence larger than life. What I learned from him is how to bend the total shit out of a guitar string. We are talking like a 2 1/2 to 3 step bend. That alone is hard to do. Great guitarist.
One of the best guitar solos ever. I never listened to music much until one of my friends in high school introduced me to Pink Floyd . Now i love music, listen to all kinds of stuff now.
David Gilmore, and Pink Floyd, show that you don't need to put a note in every spot you can. When every note you play is perfect! Still amazing, excellent reaction video.
You mentioned a bit more gravel in his voice compared to 30 years ago... Time flies, because it's actually been 40 years since the song was recorded! 😯 That's right - creeping up on almost half a century 👴 Thanks for choosing a great version of an immortal song... well done!
I had the privilege of seeing Pink Floyd in Tampa Florida in 1987,one of the best live performances I have ever seen. All of their shows rock but if you get a minute check out the pulse version of Comfortably Numb.
This is the only song that makes me cry and smile at the same time. The way he plays his guitar is beyond words. This should be the last guitar solo played on existence of universe. Like I would give 20 years of my life to see him on a live concert.
Saw this concert in a movie theater with my dad.. It was so good to share the experience with him, since he's to "blame" for me listening to so many great artists, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Rush, Tool ....
Great reaction to a great song, and one of my favorite bands of all time. With that being said, one of my other favorite bands (Alice In Chains) has a song called Down In A Hole, which, as a singer, I think you will appreciate very much. The harmonies between the lead singer (Layne) and the back up and lead guitarist (Jerry) are amazing! Make sure you do the live, unplugged version. I promise you will not be disappointed!
Hahaha.. yes, I went and saw the Pink Floyd laser show at the IMAX planetarium theater in downtown Charlotte, NC... it was a 12 o'clock midnight show on a Saturday evening after a downtown concert fest... it was mind-blowing. Before the show they had an announcement something like this: "This theater's IMAX sound system has 100,000 watts of power, and warning, if loud music causes problems for you, please leave now, because this show will be played at full power." You could hear every vibration of a guitar string and feel the bass in your chest. That was about 20 years ago and it still gives me chills to think about it... and yes, there was an aroma.
I saw this show earlier in the tour and David's voice was brilliant. I understand that he had a cold during the later part of tour - that probably accounts for the slight hoarseness here.
*_Please react to High Hopes Live in Gdansk_* imho, that may be one of my favorite Gilmour solos and his voice is absolutely mesmerizing. That is a song that has a bit of everything that is great about Dave, esp that version!! His vocals, the acoustic guitar>steel pedal solo>acoustic outro with those strings is nothing short of perfection. That song and that performance with the orchestra is Ethereal!! The entire show is absolutely beautiful with my fav version of Echoes(sans the original Live at Pompeii 1972 obvi) with the late, great Richard Wright. RIP Rick
This song is just timeless. David could never figure out how to shred, so he learned other ways to make the guitar tell his stories. Thank god for that, his guitar just digs into your soul and wraps itself around all your emotion buttons and mashes them relentlessly.
@@edp3202 Some people have the knack for it, some people dont. It's like any other skill, some are suited for it, some aren't. David isn't, so he developed godly string bending skills that very very few can match.
@@edp3202 I dunno if I would call Eddie a shredder. He kinda had his own style. He was very good tho. Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, those were two awesome shredders. So is Buckethead.
Absolutely sensational. My all time favourite performance of ‘Comfortably Numb’, from David Gilmour, in the wonderful setting of this Amphitheater, in Pompeii. This time with a crowd, unlike his previous performance their with Pink Floyd, in 1971, when they played the wonderful ’Echoes’. David is 70 years of age at this Show, in 2016. And you’re right, you should have your headphones on too. Very loud. I was lucky enough to see this Show at a one night only Cinema Showing. Magnificent, all of it. Truly wonderful. 🎶❤️🎶
I picked up a guitar because of Gilmour, mostly. I soon realized that I'd never be 10% as good as him but I still enjoy it. He's the best guitarist of all time, no cap !
Ken, this song was recorded in 1979 (released in 1980,) so it’s been 40+ years since the recording. David was 33 when he sang this for the album, and he’s 70 in the above footage. 🖤
Remember this is a guitarist singing not a singer playing the guitar. He's also in his 70's and not in his 20's anymore. I didn't go to the planetarium because I went to see Dave Gilmour instead.
Best reaction by far ken.! Love the part of you pointing out he’s British “can’t” pronunciation!! Also your respect of just how talented this mild mannered guitar geniuses is is impressive.! Great knowledge and understanding of Gilmour ken..Bravo my frien!👏
Gilmour's voice get of course a noticeble raspness due aging, but his guitar doesn't. That's his second voice that never ages. The voice of the doctor in the original record was by Richard Wright
Dave has had a lot of different people preform Roger's vocal parts for this. There's a good one out there with Bowie doing the song with him. I also wonder how far into the show this is, as he sounds a bit tired and probably has a dry throat, because I've seen him do this at this age and he sounded smoother in those performance. Great video, thanks for a good way to start the day 😁
@Rob Tonge For this tour it was always the second to last song of the night before Run Like Hell closes the shows. I agree, it's a bit raspy and raw, but he makes it work superbly. One of my favourite versions and I've heard them all. lol
Imo this is best live version; the additional musicians fill it out properly. The drummer and bassist look like they're having the time of lives...I don't blame them *ALSO...NEW SUB*
I was one of the people who started playing guitar because of Gilmour, haha. He did a version Shine on you Crazy Diamond at the Mermaid Theater a few years ago that was incredible. During the verses it was just him signing and playing guitar by himself. It gives me chills. It’s kind of hard to find now, but I think the Live at Gdańsk version was similar if I remember correctly.
This is so fantastic, my favorite version of this is the one off of Pulse, but Delicate Sound of Thunder is a close second.. The performance with the crazy “disco ball” is super mesmerizing and his voice was insanely divine. This is one of my all time favorite songs, I live for that second guitar solo 🎸, and that live performance is such an experience! David Gilmour is 75 this year also.. Thank you for your reaction.
Thanks for adding the roar of the audience at the end of your video :D That long guitar solo is really hypnotic, thank you for reacting to it. May I ask you to look at one of the songs of David Bowie? While you have started to listen to Davids :)
Yes, the great Chuck Leavell on keyboards\vocals. ... singing the Roger Waters part (there is a great live version w Bowie). LOVED the Laser Floyd at the Hayden Planetarium! LOL YES...PLEASE HEADPHONES!
it´s nice you took the pompeii 2016 version. though pulse 1994 is the most spectacular one of this song, it is great to see gilmour age like good old red wine, becoming better and better still. he is 70 in this video.
I think David Gilmour turn 75 just a couple of weeks ago. And it blows me away to watch this thinking Comfortably Numb is always perform llast and he can still nail it!
I was at the very last show of the Rattle That Lock tour in 2016 (and also attended in 2015 too, both times in London). 50 shows over two years, each show at least two hours long, and yet he still sounded damn good on that very last night for someone who was 70 years old! Sadly, I don't think we'll ever see the likes of those shows from him again.
This was the first time in his career I felt you could hear noticeable ageing in Dave’s voice. I went to 5 shows on the tour and you could notice it tiring faster than previous tours, but to hold up so well for so long is remarkable.
Laser Floyd at the planetarium was awesome. Ours used to do the entire Dark Side of the Moon EP. They also had other nights featuring Aerosmith, The Who, etc. Also, just an FYI, in the original lineup Roger Waters sang the doctor's part.
Oh, and ya. I used to go to the St. Louis planetarium. I was a farm girl from southern Illinois, and it was the space shows that turned me on to electronic/ambient/space music. The laser shows were good, but I loved the space shows. He, wandering off to the woods, but gave you everything helped folks with their vocals after having diastasis recti?
you get the like just because of the: i'm gonna shut up, this the guitar solo. That and it's comfortably numb... easy P.S.: that's not the chills, that's David Gilmour touching your soul
Computer one of these days I'm gonna cut you into little pieces. How many out there know where that verse comes from. Mr. Vocal Coach just earned him some brownie points. Also sir, nicely done with the song you posted. Nice voice.
Saw Pink Floyd laser shows in SF & Seattle in the early 90s... And yes it was always a dome laser arena with some copious amounts of pot or hash smoking prior...
You should react to the 94 Pulse concert performance. See what Gilmour was like in his prime. As far as the Pompeii performance goes, the only member of Pink Floyd on that stage is Gilmour. The band is is Gilmour's band. A little trivia, Gilmour was the first live act in the Amphitheater of Pompeii since 79AD. The guitar strap he's using was Jimi Hendricks. Gilmour's wife bought it for him for his birthday. You should also react to Sorrow from the same concert.
I agree with your interpretation of the lyrics to Pink Floyd's song "One of These Days." It's about chopping up a computer into little pieces when it gets stuck buffering a Pink Floyd video on TH-cam... brilliant insight!
You're absolutely right, they don't sound any different than they did back then I'm not a singer at all, sounds great to me though. Good point about backup singers softening it. Still amazing. And Someone that understands the importance of solos! LOL excellent reaction. Thank you
The parts by Chuck are "The Manager's" parts. The manager comes to the hotel finding Pink completely out of his head. He's asking "Is there anyone in there" "I'm giving you a shot to get you through the show (the Pinprick)". I had never heard Chuck sinig a lead before. I liked the way he performed this part
Having watched TH-cam uploads and Periscope broadcasts of this tour as it progressed around the u.s. at the time, I can attest to the fact that Gilmour was in perfect voice during the first part of this tour. I believe this was the last show in Italy and that raspiness was more the ravages of the tour than from aging.
I love the ‘can’t’. You are right. He doesn’t say it on the album. In the UK with different accents, some say ‘can’t’, as I do. And some say ‘caaaant’. It’s great we are all different. I love hearing him pronounce it as he does, non US artists singing in an American accent is a bug bear of ours. The ‘doctor’s’ voice isn’t all over the place, it’s part of the performance and is spine tingling/creepy.
Best part: "I'm gona shut up, this is the guitar solo."
Smart man
And it wasn’t yet THE guitar solo, just the first one!
Brilliant. I applauded Ken at that.
Best decision ever
He is one gentleman
2nd guitar solo is as close to perfection that a human can achieve.
Agreed. 💚
The whole song
the best version is on Pulse tour DVD. That was perfection. Was perfect in tune, in FX, in the delay time, bendings, etc.
Was the perfect solo.
Personally I think it's far from his best but it's still masterful.
@@MigMart75 I also used to think that until the Delicate Sound of Thunder remix came out
David Gilmore is one of the most masterful soulful guitarists in rock music. who? get his name correct. Brad Benneti
Every note counts
And that to me beats shredding any day of the week.
Pink Floyd...by far the best live show I’ve ever seen in my life. The music, the lasers and lights, the overall atmosphere. There is legit nothing like it and after they retire for good, there never will be again.
I actually love his older voice it’s the sign of experience and wisdom.
I really like your reaction videos. Most vocal coaches pause every 2 seconds. You really enjoy listening to the music and don't fixate on every single detail of the vocal performance and it's really a relief
His voice has gotten old but that guitarwork hasn't. pristine, haunting, nostalgic, soulful, unbelievable.
Having this at my funeral. Adore David’s voice and guitar playing from the soul.
Same. It is difficult to pick a favourite among their many songs but this one is somehow special.

It really is! Love trying to recreate it, easily too much fun
the problem is... no one can do it at same level :D
Same here. And of course I've been to laser Floyd about a dozen times.
the most amazing guitarist i ever seen live and i was lucky enough to see him 2 nights in a row during their division bell tour
Love the “One of these days” comment to the computer. Lol. Pretty slick
He said "chop", tho

David Gilmore, and Pink Floyd, show that you don't need to put a note in every spot you can. When every note you play is perfect! Still amazing, excellent reaction video.
It is remarkable, the man was in his 70s and still as powerful as he was in the Pulse concert. The man is a literal guitar God!
David is such a wonderful singer! I love his deep voice

This is the song that made me pick up my guitar too 😁
Absolutely legendary
he always plays the first solo like in the album (people would likely go mad if he didn't), and improvises more on the second one.

I believe this was the last show in Italy and that raspiness was more the ravages of the tour than from aging.
Omg! The planetarium! It was so f'ing awesome. I probably went 15 times. And yes, the aroma....lol What a memory. Thanks!

A wonderful version of this song was recorded with David Bowie at the Royal Albert Hall in 2006
As approach my sixth decade, most days, this my favorite song of all time,. However, it depends on my mood for the day
The look on your face, sheer enjoyment
I sometimes find on YT if you back track 5 seconds it will restart and then reload the buffer and keep playing better...give this a try!
This is a great song! I don’t wanna keep pushing it but we gotta see more Tool! Keep it up 👍🏻
