  • This is Alba, she’s an experienced driver with a full licence in Usa as well as other countries.
    She has her UK practical driving test in a weeks time, she’s never done lessons with an instructor. She wanted to get an idea of what’s required from her when it comes to the driving test.
    She’s generally a really good driver but made a few errors in judgement.
    She wanted to record a mock test so she can improve some parts of her drive.

    This video is filmed during a driving lesson. It is filmed for educational purposes.
    Throughout the video there are highlights to show how you should be driving safely.
    The highlights in GREEN are what you should be doing.
    The highlights in AMBER are hazards/Advisory faults
    The highlights in RED are serious faults in a test or when I have had to intervene and tell Alba to slow down or to stop
    I hope this video will be useful! :)

    I have an unnecessary fear of joining slip roads, my mind just goes blank when assessing if it’s safe to join or not. Really need to work on my confidence! Alba seems like a confident driver, she’ll pass easily 😊

      Always try and get upto the speed of the road
      Use lower gears to speed up quicker!
      Also lean forward towards the steering wheel when looking in the right mirror to join :)

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      To join a main road at a slip road you need to fit into a space. The spaces travel as fast as the vehicles. If you are driving at the same speed it is easy to fit into a space even relatively smaller spaces if you can match the speed and align with a space. Drivers will let you in if it is feasible even if they need to slow down a few miles per hour. Joining a fast dual carriageway at 30/40 mph where the flow is at 60/70 is going to be problematic even dangerous. If traffic is flowing at 60/70 can you see how much harder it is to fit in from stopped?

    • @alexahart7390
      @alexahart7390 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s me as well, I dread the slip roads, everything in the mirror seems really fast- too much for my brain lol

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@alexahart7390 You cannot tell the speed of vehicles by looking in the mirror once for a short time. You need to look twice spaced apart or stare at the mirror for a long time to assess speed of vehicles. Both these are not a feasible way of assessment for your joining needs. So firstly factor in what speed limit is the dual carriageway? Then think about speeding up with that in mind. Then the first vehicle to shoot past you as you come up is about flow speed. So you need to be thinking of accelerating up to that speed and the next vehicle will generally be going as fast as the one that shot past. If you can achieve the sort of speed the first vehicles passed at you will much more easily fit in. Other factors that may help two lanes but only one has vehicles in it. They have the option to move over to lane 2 as you join but you have confidence of knowing that but will accelerate so they do not have to change course. The next vehicle is a lorry or other slow vehicle the space you are joining in is probably enlarging but you still speed up to general flow speed..

    you should expect every "experienced driver" to fail. 95% of "experienced drivers" will fail if they go into a new driving test because after a person starts driving for several years after getting their license, they just start to care less and less about road rules and driving in general therefore do things they shouldn't be doing.

    • @stevesmith7530
      @stevesmith7530 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      95% of drivers are probably unaware the highway code has changed this year, probably several times since they started driving. What is really perverse is that I get tested every six months to a different set of standards that would definitely fail me a regular driving test :)

    At 23:21, am I right in understanding that if you're already in that "right turn lane" (but before the Keep Clear), and the lights turn red, you're supposed to keep going? Or are you allowed to wait there at all? Would it have been a serious fault if the light had turned red before she entered the Keep Clear?
    It's a bit ambiguous to me because there's space before the Keep Clear, but it's also in the middle of the crossing so it sounds wrong to wait there

    14:08 -No, i must say it is important to check both sides even if one way, for the fact that there could be someone not obeying the one way rule ether on purpose or by mistake, Scooters, motorbikes and cycles could come up with very little notice. To discourage someone from taking caution is not a good idea and could lead to a preventable collision. always do your best to expect the unexpected, it could save a life

    i think Alba can definitely pass, she needs to practice the going into skip roads with speed 6:00
    It was good you helped her in 8:21 time
    she needs to not take risks for example
    10:32 it was good you told her about this
    It was a bad mistake to do on a test
    12:33 it was a good reminder for everyone that you mention such as zebra crossing
    It was definitely tricky for any learner on a test
    Yea she should have seen the one way road sign at 14:16
    Many learners can be hesitant such as 16:28
    It was good she slowed down in 17:47
    26:21 that was a bad mistake, i don’t think she knew
    28:21 yea it was good the motorbike let her, i don’t think she expected this and it is a reason she forget to check right blind spot
    29:36 yea it was a little bit of hesitation from her in round about
    31:39 i think she was a little hesitant because of the cyclist about if she should go or not
    It wasn’t ideal for someone to horn their car though at her
    32:44 yea she needs to remember to check blind spots in her test
    39:24 yes true that car did go straight which can confuse anyone
    Good luck to her on her driving test
    Hopefully she does pass
    It was a good drive, i have my test early next month. 😊

      Hey I will look into that, but when it comes to pedestrians
      They have priority at zebra crossings or if they are already in the road.

      If there is someone waiting to cross you do not need to wait as this will affect the traffic behind you.

      The biting point is different in every car so it may just be that you’re not used to the biting point in the new car.
      For moving off from stationary
      Do what you would normally
      Press the accelerator 1.5rpm and find the biting point and then turn the handbrake off and you shouldn’t stall
      Try this on flat surface a few times to get used to the biting point
      Hope that helps :)

      If there's an electronic handbrake there will almost certainly be a "hill hold" or anti roll-back function. Check the vehicle manual or ask the manufacturer's main dealers to be sure. It should automatically release once you have applied enough power to stop you rolling back.

    • @ClearviewDriving
      @ClearviewDriving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most new cars have a hold for around 2 seconds so they don't roll back straight away, so that's always very helpful.
      In this car if you squeeze the brakes once you're stationery it applies a hold (similar to having the parking brake on)
      To move off simply press the accelerator(the car will hold until the clutch comes up) and then bring the clutch up and it doesn't roll back. most my student don't use this but its anther option :)

    Interesting video. I train and examine drivers that are both already experienced drivers, and have normally completed and passed some form of advanced driving course, and figured it would be interesting to see what constitutes "normal" standards for a normal driving test these days. I am somewhat dismayed to say the least. As a technical point, I do wonder how long your student has been driving solo in the UK. The law permits driving on her US license for 6 months, or until she is granted a UK provisional, whichever is sooner. So in theory she should have been running around with L plates, supervising driver etc for a while now. It is a point that catches a lot of foreign residents out, that they cannot drive indefinitely on their native licence, and any UK licence they have takes precedence.
    Anyways, for the fun of it, my critique.....
    And a fault before even moving off. Great start :)
    1:51 Hand position on the wheel Pretty much constant whilst steering throught the journey.
    3:20 Repeat of moving off, car in neutral with no brakes applied.
    6:15 It really does worry me the number of people who trundle down motorway sliproads at 40mph. 55 is a great speed for motorway slip roads in flowing traffic as larger vehicles have limiters set between 50 & 60, so not much adjustment needed to slip out into a suitable gap.
    14;23 one way perhaps, but always those pesky suicyclists to consider so a decent look left is not a bad idea.
    15:27 Again that moving off. Gear, bite point, release handbrake! No wonder driving standards seem to be slipping if this method of moving off is considered normal and acceptable.
    15:45 Up a gear! Quieter, more economical, more mechanical sympathy. Although I am aware some teach lower gear for better speed control.
    20;28 handbrake neutral when stationary, all-round observations for people in wrong lane or two-wheelers. I would also mark an advisory to pull further forward once in the junction, but to remain conscious of the motorcycle.
    21:31 Advise block change to 5th
    22:24 Check right for jumpers, especially suicyclists, or me coming with blue lights on!
    24:08 New highway code suggests yielding to pedestrian
    24:32 and a minute later. Handbrake Neutral when stationary more than momentarily. Especially with those jiggly (strained?) legs and feet.

    28:27 That move off again. Should have continued putting on handbrake until clear to move

    29:24 Up a gear
    30:29 Gears
    31:06 A pair of close passes under new rules. 1.5m is almost a car width, and I have taught/required such a gap on a clear road for many many years.
    32:00 that second stall on moving off makes me think more of those legs & feet on brake and clutch. Handbrake neutral is not only safer, it removes a lot of physical effort from driving, especially in dense/stop-start traffic.
    32:21 In neutral, no footbrake, hand on the handbrake but does not engage it?
    34;19 At long last, a handbrake :)
    Guess my biggest point would be the lack of control when stationary, surely that is not acceptable in a regular test? It certainly was not when I took my test.

      Hey at 28:44 there is a pedestrians crossing on the right so the traffic is at a red light, which is why the van driver was waiting and therefore signalling for Alba to move in as he’s waiting regardless.

They are usually located around 10 metres into the road so at least 2 cars can get out the junction safely

    • @aphextwin5712
      @aphextwin5712 ปีที่แล้ว

      Checking the mirror before signalling only makes sense if we were to not signal if see certain things. I think the idea is to not startle somebody who might be right next to us. Basically if for example a cyclist is passing you and you start signalling towards their side, they might fear an immediate movement from you and react with a sudden evasive behaviour that puts them or even others in danger.
      There are of course situations when signalling is very unlikely to surprise anybody, eg, if you are already on a turning lane. But maybe it is better to make checking your mirrors before signalling a reflex, even if it wouldn’t be necessary in every situation.

    The amount of people I see that don't gey up to speed on slip roads and have issues with joining a motorway for example is insane. Many times on dual lane slip roads I end up having to change to the outside lane because I'm following someone who isn't accelerating enough and we are going to hit the motorway 15, 20 or more mph slower than the traffic, giving you many less options should something unexpected happen. If they wana take that risk I don't want to be forced to aswell thankyou very much. Its nearly as bad as lane hogging and tailgating.

    • @Stimm002
      @Stimm002 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@laurenjones2909 yea I have one near me and its not great lol. The biggest thing is practice on it to build confidence. Beyond that, stay in a lower gear with higher revs so you have more power straight away if you need it, the extra engine braking will also help you slow down to slide into a gap if that's the better option at the time. As soon as you can see the road and the traffic get that foot down to match your speed, doing the same speed as the traffic means you are moving with the gaps so you have more time to move into one, if you can't match the speed the closer you are to it the easier it will be. Also most family cars can slow down quicker than they accelerate especially already at speed, so your going to find it easier to slow than to accelerate. Other than that is there anything in particular you find difficult with it?

    why are cars allowed to be parked all over the sides of roads? I get that people need to park somewhere but this seems dangerous and wouldn't it be more safe to build extra car parks. The roads are a perfect size for 2 cars to drive down until you park along both edges and reduce it down to just one car fitting through... I think the answer might be that car ownership and the population has increased exponentially and that the way we live now isn't properly adapted for so many vehicles? It adds more stress to driving when having to avoid so many obstacles as well as staying alert for hazards, road signs, car control etc

    You are helping the pupil too much though, an examiner shouldn't be giving that much information.
    The main point I would like to highlight is your comment on checking the centre mirror every 8 seconds.
    Telling a pupil this will only lead to them concentrating on counting, instead of thinking about when to look in the mirrors.

      With me helping her at the beginning in the test the examiners don’t expect a new driver to deal with challenges like that
