    I adore this video. I don't know why, but this knife hits me at the core. And so, I finally got one from Heinnie Haynes. Thanks for the lovely video, Mr. Eric. I can't count the number of times I rewatched it.

    Very good to see the improvement with their knives still going, like you said very minor faults that can be rectified quite easily, nice handle material and for the price seem to be a pretty good deal, great video as always :)

      I’d say, at the budget end, Wright knives are the nicer, better looking pocket knives, but yours are better work knives. Mind you, after a bit of polishing, your £20 knives come up pretty smart too!

    Looks pretty consistent to me. Not perfect but well worth what you pay. Collectors need to understand that Knives are made for people who plan on using them not people who are going to put it on a shelf. Well some makers do produce a knife with the collector in mind but at what point does it become a shiny bobble?

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These would suit most people as a smart enough pocket knife. And perfectly good users.

    They all look pretty decent! I see them as "using" knives, not "collectibles", and I don't mean that disparagingly, both are a good kind of knife. I have one AW knife, an ettrick which I am rather pleased with. It wasn't very sharp though. You should see it on instagram at some point!

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes, these knives are good looking enough to carry, strong enough to use, but not so pretty that you would be frightened of carrying them.

  • @chrisinston427
    @chrisinston427 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi. I bought a clip point from them (8 month week waiting list ) . It did arrive after about 7 weeks but the quality is awful.
    There was so much dirt in it that I had to use pliers to initially open the blade. The blade itself was centred but didn’t look right and on further inspection found it was actually bent. It also was not sharp.
    After some work , the action is now good but the blade although now sharp is still bent.
    After waiting about 7 weeks for it, I expected more.
    Maybe they selected good ones for you knowing you were reviewing them.

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should’ve sent it back. They need to learn from their mistakes. I’ve bought about 20 of their knives, most of which have been anonymous purchases, but it’s difficult to be absolutely sure as too many people know my real name these days! I’m pretty sure that quality has improved dramatically, but they still can’t sharpen for toffee! Though, interestingly Ashley can, and does sharpen his custom orders!

  • @pjcullen5860

  • @Lumpy_Peter

    I ordered my first lambsfoot knife directly from Ashley. The fit and finish is exceptional, the edge, however, was just symbolic. Upon arrival I was shocked how sturdy the knife was. Does this standard production also come with 3mm + blade stock?

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, they’re sharpening isn’t their strongest point! I can live with that, because I can deal with that, but I have raised it with Ashley once or twice. It might not surprise you, but I love these little knives. I’ve been selling off most of my other knives to buy more of these. I’ve never measured the blade stock, but I’d guess more like 2mm than 3.

    • @Lumpy_Peter
      @Lumpy_Peter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@slick_slicers True, it wasn't too difficult to put an workable edge on it. Might be that the stock on mine is thicker because I asked Ashley to make the blade out of O1 tool steel instead of usual C70.

    I have a buffalo horn, sheep's foot blade Arthur Wright knife I bought in 2018. Blade cantering terrible, slight blade rub on one side and totally blunt. Sent it back, they kept it for about a month and it came back the same as I sent it. Glad to see things have improved, I still cannot understand why a knife when brand new is not sharp, as the whole purpose of the knife is to cut !!! Good review (KB Wales UK)

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s what I’ve been settling out to test. Unfortunately, they know who I am! I tried to buy 3 knives anonymously from Jane at the Famous Sheffield shop, but she said “is your name ... by any chance? Cover blown. She promised not to check or clean them, and she certainly clean them! These four were on the same basis. I bought a few from HH, and I’m certain they weren’t checked, as I had to return a shocking Wostenholm to them. It shouldn’t have ever left the factory!
      What remains a problem is sharpness! That is something I’ve discussed with Ash, as you’ll see in the next A. Wright video on Sunday.

      As I noted in another comment here, my sheepsfoot blade also came dull, and even worse, I was unable to sharpen it (to my satisfaction at least) with the diamond Lansky controlled angle system. I'm not an expert sharpener, but I'm not a newbie either. Very frustrating and disappointing. I bought the knife within the last 6 months.

    Just received one of these. Many gaps, polishing compound everywhere, rust in nail nick, alignment--almost rubbing, dull and uneven grind, hafting is uneven with many blemishes, wood doesn't seem to have been oiled. However, wood covers are beautiful (an 800-year-old building timber recovered from a burned historic building), shape of knife is very nice, and a great handmade feel. My Rough rider buckshot jack has a far better fit and finish--(15 USD). And, of course, all my GEC knives are far better (and a great deal more expensive). With that being said, this knife is handmade, handsome, and has a great ergo feel. After cleaning, polishing, oiling the covers, repairing the uneven bevel/grind, sharpening, and flushing out the polishing compound, for the money (and even a little more), I am proud to carry this knife. So, for about 60 USD, I am glad I got this knife and might even buy the more expensive stag version.

      I had thought the days of slip-shod Arthur Wrights had gone with the Harrison takeover, but you should have sent it back. you do still get knives that need a good clean, but given the price, that’s not surprising. They really should be sharp though… TEW manage it with even their cheapest knives.

    Going above and beyond Eric - most impressed.
    I don't mind knives arriving blunt as long as the edge is free from defects and I can sharpen it easily myself.
    My number one hate is blade wobble - how do these rate on that score?

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just followed the factory edge, which I think was the second slot from the top. The steel’s quite soft, so it doesn’t take long. Not sure it would take long to blunt either, but they last me long enough as I don’t cut that much.

    • @gryphgryphon3366
      @gryphgryphon3366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was unable to put a paper slicing edge on my A Wright sheepsfoot blade using my Lansky diamond system. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but I've used that system to sharpen a lot of knives....and I do mean a lot. After five tries I gave up and tossed the beautiful stag handled knife into the knife drawer.

    I like the ebony on those, as far as edges go, I find the factory edge on a good 50% of knives I buy, no matter where they are from need some attention so I am not that bothered by a not very sharp edge. What really bothers me is when they are uneven or roughly sharpened and you almost have to start from scratch to get a working edge that will last with only the odd strop or touch up.
    I don't think in the past that Sheffield knives ever came with much of an edge, whereas now everyone expects a paper cutting edge straight out of the box so makers need to address that fact.

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s definitely a change in expectations, but TEW get it right, and I can’t help but think a sharp edge is the least you should expect of a knife!

    • @chrisosh9574
      @chrisosh9574 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @slick_slicers
      @slick_slicers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All Taylor’s are made by Lee Wright, from the cheapest plastic handled to the mother of pearl, and they are all of an excellent quality for the given price level. Wright’s have been decidedly sketchy, but, a couple of years back, father and son Michael and Ash Harrison took the firm over. Since then, quality has been their watchword. I’ve been trying to test this was best as I can. I’ve been buying them 3 or 4 at a time from different sources and exhibiting them on here. These four, plus one previous one were all the same pattern so I could compare them to check the consistency. I have to say, my conclusion is that they’ve cracked it!
