  • Judy Bryan came to Premier Rehab two months after having a lumbar spinal fusion. Learn how hydrotherapy helped her spinal lumbar fusion recovery.
Judy had suffered from scoliosis since early childhood, but the increasing pain had finally convinced her to look into surgery at age 55, something Judy was very wary of doing. Judy ended up having spinal lumbar fusion from T9 to sacrum, totaling nearly half of her back.
Hydrotherapy elevated her recovery. The buoyancy and resistance of the pool allowed Brad Stucky, Physical Therapist, to work with Judy to reeducate her muscles without the pain inhibition that prevents movement and causes muscle guarding. She attributes much of her current success to working with Stucky and using aquatic therapy.

I'm 8 weeks post op Spinal Fusion L5-S1---feel great---I stood up in place today at a get together for 3 straight hours--unaware I had done this---before surgery I couldnt stand 10 minutes without having to sit down. Does Medicare cover this Hydro PT? Would like to try it when I'm cleared for PT--which will be 12th week.

are these exercises good to do prior to spinal surgery as well?

HRTsAFyre it is best to speak with a doctor regarding your specific situation. Often times aquatic therapy can be used prior to surgery to help strengthen muscles, but we do not have specific pre-surgery protocols for spinal surgery in our case study library.

HydroWorx International Inc. thank you I have had spinal surgery before but need more done. I see my surgeon next month. I will ask him. I have a pool and would like to build up strength prior to undergoing surgery.

I want to know what type of pain someone should feel 3 months post spinal fusion L4/L5. I feel like I did week 2... which was not bad but anytime I reach for something like a door handle or bend slightly forward even 2 inches or to the side 2 inches I get pain in the spine? Wondering is this normal should I try and work through it or is something wrong?

@@jacobcowan6024 I am a year post L4/L5 Fusion and not any better than I was after a month or so... I am going back soon to see if I need fusion L5/S1. I think that disc was bad even 4 years ago but was never addressed. I guess my back feels strong but there is something that is still causing it to ache and hurt in certain positions, I don't believe that is going to heal from PT as I have tried everything from light PT, moderate to nothing and find no difference.

What I have found now is my fusion did not fuse not enough bone formed causing my pain so probably looking at revision for original L4/L5! Hopefully end of April
