I broke my cherry on my first car but that was out of necessity as I was skint. It was 1981 and it was a 1971 Avenger that I TOWED home from an auction. Ran really rough so treated it to plugs, points oil and oil and air filter change in the street outside mum and dads house. Still ran badly then a guy walking up the street and said he was a Hillman mechanic took a look and said the HT leads had been changed around so put them in the right firing order. Instant success. He also said the carb diaphragm was probably shot so got a new one and it blooming purred as the diaphragm looked like someone had been let loose with a Stanley knife. It was a hell of a baptism of fire but I did all my own stuff until I got a job with a company car so someone else got paid to do it. Most of what I know is now out of date ha ha ha
My 1st car was a mk3 escort 1.3L In brown.......you cud hear the tappets from Mars!!! Locks didn't work, oil leaked onto the exhaust manifold , flames in engine bay as I checked at the petrol station , lad threw sand on it Changed engine at college for an even worse scrapped engine !! Only had 2nd n 4th gear on way home Yet , I'd have that car back in a heart beat
Well done, everyone has to start somewhere. Small hint, when engine is running, probably best not to fiddle with the coils and leads - they may be fine, but if a stray spark prefers to earth through you instead of the spark plug, you'll feel something that you won't forget 🙂
Spark Plugs easy to change , famous last words LOL as last time i took my old car to a mechanic the spark plug snapped so yeah it was a nightmare to sort out haha
I remember trying to remove the plugs on a rover 25 ,it had been treated with k seal for years, you couldn't have welded them in better . Anyway well done Jon 👏.
40+ years ago, taper seat spark plugs on a 1.7l O series engined Princess, impossibly overtightened courtesy of the previous owner/garage, took weeks of effort to remove. Since then I’ve always used a very tiny smear of copper grease on used spark plug threads and nearly always torqued them.
Well done Jon another great video good to see you having a go and a good job done i would have approached it the same way I’m with your dad never put cooper slip on the plugs when I’ve done them the rover is sounding sweet as well now and started well Please keep learning and your dad is a great teacher! All the best Daniel
Hi Jon...youre doing well...that engine...u have to remove the coil packs to get the plugs out...that is very easy though...make sure u get the socket on dead square as its easy to break the porcelain on the plug..about 1mm gap is ideal... Check there usnt engine oil in the re cess where the plug sits...mine had oil in there...was the gadket failing in the top cover...best to put a little copaslip on the plug threads when u put them in....But not too much....Bob..Paignton....
Hi Jon, another great upload….great for me because I have the same level of expertise as yourself (but twice your age)…so I am learning along the way too. I have a KV6 so my tasks like this will be a little more difficult…but still enjoy your vids regardless.
Nice work, more spannering experience, Your 75 is been well & truly recommissioned. I was told that spark plug threads have a coating to avoid corrosion / seizing
Can tell you have never ran an old aircooled bug in your youth all this would be second nature now haha!I was told never grease plug threads as effects the torque of the bolt in the head and can fire them out in worse case scenario ?
Or even a bit of WD 40 on the threads Jon...makes the job a little more pleasurable...!! There's only 2 coil packs on that engine...1 to 4 and 2 to 3..
@@JonCouplandI must have looked away for a moment! You did very well though. Bet you're happy it's not a Mercedes V12 though.... 24 spark plugs to change!
Allways apply a slight smear of anti seize compound to the plug threads,Why well these are long life plugs and remain fitted for many years in most cases, and of course the plugs are made of different metal to the alloy of the head ,so to avoid problems for you next time or whoever takes the plugs out next give them a smear, you know it makes sense.

Great that that chap was able to point you in the right direction 😄
like your Dad@@JonCoupland sometimes you need a teacher - I got one first day at car school lol

You have the best teacher, Jon!💪🏼😃
I absolutely do
Everyone has to start somewhere. Spark plugs a a good starting point and easy on modern 4 cyl cars.
Well done.
Thank you 👍
Hi jhon great to see you getting stuck in and you look like a pro very good 👍
Thanks mate 😁
Just be glad this isn’t the KV6. The back bank of plugs are literally impossible to get to 😂
Dad said my tummy might have got in the way for that one 🤣
The spark plugs have served the car well, great video again young man.
Thanks for watching Paul

That's a good point and afterwards when I was editing the video I had the same thought. Good job I had my rubber soles on 🤣
Yay, well done. With some support from Dad 😊
Thanks so much 😊

Blimey! Thankfully this change went ok then 😄

You have a fantastic selection of knitwear for your spannering - Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much! - Got to keep warm!

Oh dear 😬 thank you 😊
I'd have taken the oil filler off too as it looked like the whole black bit had to come off.
😊 thank you ... That was how I made the mistake
Would have done it also, a lot are one big piece.
I did my first spark plug change aged 15 - on a 1957 Sun Hornet 98cc motorcyle, only one plug instead of four, but seen one, seen 'em all!😂
🤣
Well done, Jon.
New(ish) subscriber here because your dad is an "absolute legend" and the way you two work together is brilliant!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching

Great video! Do the head gasket. It shouldn't be too bad, unless there is something specifically difficult about that engine.
If it needs doing in the end ... I'll do it 😁

Good job 👍 love that popping sound from the ignition leads 😊
Yeah me too 🤣
Next up has to be a brake pad change. It’s a fairly easy step up from oil/filter or spark plug change.
Ah that's something I'm actually quite good at doing 😊

No - I had a Nissan Micra ... Reliable 😄👍
that would explain it!

New plugs 2/3/4 you fo got to check the gap?
No dad did it in the background 🙄
Or even a bit of WD 40 on the threads Jon...makes the job a little more pleasurable...!! There's only 2 coil packs on that engine...1 to 4 and 2 to 3..
😀
Did you forget to use the feeler gauge to check the gap?
Nope. All checked :) - 2 on camera. 2 off

Yes that does make sense! A good rationale
@@JonCouplandGreasing things like wheel bolts messes up the torquing process… not recommended….
Hey Jon young man....never work on an engine with it running...just me being bossy...but always turn it off....sorry....Bossy Bob..!!!!
Happy to be told off. I thought the same thing when editing the video
shocked you didn't use a Proton protector
I don't have one sadly
They are never needed… unlike the Rover one which apparently got worn out for some reason ! Harsh ! 😅
Sounds alright for a diesel 😂😂😉
🤣🤣 naughty
You only tested the gap on one plug 🫣
Don't panic. Dad did the others off camera 😊
Some how I new he would...@@JonCoupland
