  • Cindy! Again! I really need to work on my intonation, listening back, I was very out of tune...and a bit off rhythm...and a bit sloppy...but hey I had fun! I hope yall enjoyed it too, and I hope you're not sick of this tune yet haha. Also, I'm not sure what the phone camera was doing but it turned half of my hat brim transparent...I don't even know how that's possible! But my hat is not transparent, it is denim and felt.

I was sitting in a dive writing a letter and some lady was playing the guitar and singing the schoolhouse rock song about nouns. Never before have I felt and heard a smile. I turned and sure enough she had grin. Your energy in this has a similar feel. It is genuine and good music.

Thank you again for cheerful Music, and Jokes! It sparkles my heart to share your music, and improvement with my nearly blind 87 year old UNSTOPPABLE Mum, and her yard full of chickens! She was concert pianist back in the day ...four hand Bartók ...she loves your music, and Chickens! She would love to take her Steinway out to the Lawn (Huge Smile). Kindness knows no bounds. Respect! Next week...on stage with Bela Fleck and Steve Martin at Carnegie Melon yea?! (Huge Smile)

_"Well, Cindy got religion, she's had it once before. She grabbed my ol' banjo, man, and threw it on the floor. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home."_
I'd first heard the song via the duet recording by Johnny Cash and Nick Cave, released in 2003 in the "Unearthed" box-set.

Love it, I think I told you about my great grandfather from my dad's side was in the civil war on the confederate side from Missouri. He was the one I wrote my first banjo song about. Well, I found my other great grandfather was from Pennsylvania and was also in the civil was but was on the union side. He was part of the Co K regiment protecting Lincoln at the time from the little I read about him. Banjo music just reminds me of that period of time in early American history.

I have recently gone through several life changing events.
I also had to learn how to forgive more than I ever thought possible.
On a better note... I took wooden banister support, a domino tin, a G guitar string, and a spring for reverb: all to construct a one string fretless guitar.
It was hard making music at first, but it was an addictive toy. I admit it is very hard playing fretless.
It is so much easier now and a lot of fun.
Then I found your channel. I listen through a Bluetooth sound bar.
I watch you laugh when you try to add more slides and it gets tougher with added slide. I have to laugh with you knowing how much fun it is. Better than any video game trying to be fast and accurate.
I and many others have noticed that your smile is the best music because it never seems to stop. Methinks that an abundance of joy makes your music and smile inevitable.
    THANK YOU for sharing.
Depression is no longer a battle.
Please don't change a thing. Just keep being you. And keep jammin'.

Brilliant! Music should elicit feeling in the listener. It should have character and be alive, and for me, that was full of joy and lifted my spirits. That was played perfectly, even though it maybe wasn’t perfectly played; your joy in playing Cindy was communicated to your audience, and that’s what it’s all about. I’m going to restart the video again.

Great song Friday. You mentioned a strumming technique and think I know what you were saying about the physicality of playing governing your tempo instead of concentrating on tempo it physically limits you and mechanically keeps time and your brain can wonder off and think about lunch. When playing the drums especially. If a song starts off with the bass drum only and you’re nervous about everyone’s eyes on you to play perfectly, tap a beat on your leg while you play the bass out loud and it regulates your tempo. Ghost notes and stuff like that. Cheers!

I am SO addicted to Cindy now! I loved seeing how you worked with and improved the intonation as you played. It's hard for the fingers because "in tune" is in a slightly different place on each string even when the fingers are in the same position - you're doing really great! As a fiddle player, I sure do appreciate it when other string players deal with the challenges of no frets! (PS Some of the times you were "not listening" you definitely were hitting the tuning very well - don't assume it was all like the times you noticed the "off" notes...)

Your phone was using both cameras to try and compensate for the sunlit background. This creates parallax* which your phone's software tries to correct on the fly. When it fails, you get that "transparent" effect in places. It's a cool feature when it works.
*two images from slightly different angles - like most people get from their left and right eyes. Our brain processes these images and interprets them as 3 dimensional!

Hi Phoebe, @2:08, the strum gesture does change the timbre nicely as you point out & also delays slightly the up/down repetition, opening a sense of swing & motion. And it's fun watching you do it! Hope all is well, take care
