When I was in college and had a meal plan I would take food in ziploc bags to my dorm room. I even had friends over for stir fry or soup with all the veggies from the salad bar since we were all broke.
My college had a group chat with thousands of people in it called "free food". Anywhere on campus if someone noticed there was an event or someone giving out free food they would post it on there. It was AMAZING.
At UCSF there used to be a texting list you could subscribe to and it would alert students whenever there was free food on campus. Idk they still might do it, I’ve just graduated years ago so I have no idea lol. They also coordinated with grocery stores or cafes like Starbucks in San Francisco to collect food that will soon reach their “sell by date” and gave it out to students for free every week. We brought grocery bags and everything. I loved it 😭
It's also one of the most prestigious universities in the country and arguably one of the more prestigious in the world. Plus, it is a private university that is not subsidized by taxpayer money.

I went to central Saint martins for my masters and I would do the same only that at CSM they don’t tell you it’s free. It’s always food that can no longer be sold because it expires that day. It’s not the freshest but it’s good enough. Also I was always kind and polite with canteen staff so I would almost always get extra food for free. So remember to be nice! It will always pay off in life 😊

Sadly, as an employee of Duke University Hospital, I see quite a few med students study late and starving, thankfully there's an Enzo's Pizza nearby so just order 2 large box and go to each room telling them to go get quick snack at the student launch, every Christmas they give me a thank you card saying "thank you for always looking out for us"

Dude our Uni does free freshly made hot dinners and lunches once a week and did them every day towards the end of the year. Plus I have never paid for books and my fees are around $5k a year. Videos like these make me realise how much better schools over here are at supporting students

University of San Antonio in Texas has an agreement with HEB where all students can get up to 5 food items like beans , meat, and bread per day !! Living on campus it’s absolutely amazing love UTSA .

As someone who went to Duke, I can promise you that this isn't super common. Yeah there are tons of events where you can get free food but tbh the start and end of the semester is when most people eat for free the most because thats when a lot of events happen

Omg this brings me back to my college days they would have student appreciation once a month w free snacks or drinks but on cinco de mayo they brought a taco truck! I was so grateful my English professor was this sweet older lady who knew when the truck got there and dismissed us all 15 min before so we could line up & gave us an extra long break to eat outside and we just got right back to work for our very little time left after that 😂 love that lady ms. Shakespeare (yes that was her real name she gave us her whole ancestry on the first day😭🤣)

Privelaged upper class Americans, woe is me my life sucks as i drink $8 coffees and $15 turkey sandwiches given to me for free. There is a reason they want loan forgiveness paid off by working class americans, increase education and income levels of upper class and make the lower pay for it... Panera does a few things right, their mac n cheese is fire, their broccoli cheddar soup, and the chicken panini with peppers and avocado.. dunno what else but they make good food..every time I go tho.. it’s a hard 20-30 bucks but where are you not spending that now.. Arby’s costed me 19 bucks last week for a single meal and a value sandwich… we are there… the prices we used to joke about..

As someone who went to Duke, I can promise you that this isn't super common. Yeah there are tons of events where you can get free food but tbh the start and end of the semester is when most people eat for free the most because thats when a lot of events happen

I would call it fee-less food. It's still paid by your tuition, but you don't need to pay a fee to take one.
