For the stove glass, use a razor scraper, some vinegar and water, and elbow grease. For the outside, gently sand off any rust with a fine grit hand sanding sponge and then apply stove polish (also known as blacking). Thanks for sharing!
At about 7:54 in this video; did I hear your little one doing a moose call.? I suppose that could come in handy ; considering where you live. WOW! Now that's Canadian. You're raising them right. Here on the central coast of California, we just teach them to call for pizza.😊
If I may also recommend you place a 4x4 in the chicken coop rather than a round branch. This allows the chicken to keep their feet flat when roosting. It also prevents their feet from freezing in the cold winter!😊
Don't feel bad about not cleaning your windows, you were very busy this summer! Clean windows will let that winter sun in, very important. And the baby sleeping on your back is adorable.
I’m 68 now and although we have oil heat…I mostly heat my home with my wood stove….have for many years…even when my kids (who are now in their 40’s) were little…stacking, hauling and carting wood is a way of life …as far as the rusty bits…. I just use a bit fine sand paper to scrub away the surface rust and then clean it all down with water …let it dry thoroughly and then use black stove polish paste to bring it back to shiny new…. I do this after every burn season as there is no away from the rusty bits returning, at least in our area…. You remind me of me back in the day…. Doing is learning and learning is knowing…step by step 😊…we however didn’t have the internet to research anything…you are very fortunate to have all the resources available today 😉
Thanks for letting us watch your life! Love to see masks for you and the littles when cleaning the stove and the coop, just for dust and fumes. ❤ Hope you have a wonderful winter!
Yes, I agree with AshleyMcKee. A scraper with a razor blade does an amazing job on stubborn build up on the wood stove glass. For decades, the wood stove has been the primary source of heat for our house.
You’ve got this! I farm and live off grid in northern Michigan and am looking forward to following your journey. Please know that stove ash is pretty nasty to inhale and contains lots of toxins! I would recommend keeping the beautiful baby away from that area when working with ash. Same with cleaning the deep liter.
To clean the glass on your wood stoves you can use white vinegar with steel wool even your cook stove. They will come out looking sparkling and clean. Please don’t have your baby on your back while cleaning out your chicken shed. The dust is bad for anyone let alone your children. It will kill your lungs !!!!Love and best wishes for your long winter !!!
Those window panes will lift out of the frame so you can wash them outside or in a sink or something. That way you can easily get to both sides and also right into the tracks that they slide in. Just slide them to the middle, grab both sides and lift a bit, then angle out at the bottom. We have some windows like tis and the whole window, including the screen, can be removed for a deep cleaning. I am loving your gentle pace with your narration and hoping to see some projects getting done too!
I don’t know what kind of windows you have, but it looks to me like they are removable. It would be a whole lot easier to clean that window. If you took it out, you could clean the windows separately and the grooves completely..! You would love the results..!! ❤ The windows came out great… Super job..! ❤❤❤
Stove polish will help maintain your stoves black look. Just scrape the loose rust off and whipe clean. Then put the stove polish on like shoe polish. I would also be more worried about the lack of railings over the kids touching the wood stove. Theres a hard line to falling off the deck.
Thanks for the tip! Yes, we watch like hawks on the deck and mostly play in the front yard where it’s just level ground. The railing problem will be fixed in the future!
Yup, I was shocked the first time I tried a similar cleaning method. For me I use 50/50 white vinegar and water and the ash from the fire just as you did. Works so well. I keep two bowls though, one for the dirty paper towel and I don't "double-dip" to keep my vinegar solution clean. That way, once you're done with your first couple of passes, you still have clean vinegar solution to clean up the glass, leaves it totally streak free. It's amazing.
Curious as to why you leave ash in your woodstove. We, too, heat with wood, a Blaze King wood stove. I have a nice little removable metal brick on the bottom of the fire box so I can empty my ashes into a removable pan underneath the stove. This allows me to clean it out with very little dust getting in the air. My stove can run on one fill 24-36 hours, depending on the temperature outside. If it is really cold, below zero F., I may have to load twice a day. I like to clean the ashes out each time I fill it so I can get more wood in the stove. I push all the active coals to one side and scrape the ashes into my ash pan. Then I can fill my fire box as full as I can get it. The few active coals always start up the fire again in very little time. Blaze King stoves are amazing.
Deep bedding is the best method and wherever you put your dirty shavings, make sure to layer it with some leaves and keep doing that and it will break down into soil that will be good for your gardens. There’s probably a little bit more detail about that if you just looked it upon Google
Regarding your windows. Use an old paintbrush as a duster., dirt disturber before you vacuum. Your bathroom window looks much like ours-the panes can be lifted right out. Take each slider and move it to the middle. Grasp the sides and gently push up-it will come out of the tracks. You can then really deep clean both each one and the tracks. I pop them out to the last one. Then clean each one as I put them back in the order I took them out. World do well for me since my windows are high from the outside and I can tackle all the windows from inside. Other windows we have we just dislodge with a side push into the frame. There is a hidden spring system in them.
I use a plastic scouring pad for the stove glass. I also leave henhouse shavings for a year to compost. After the fall cleanout I don't add to that pile again. In the spring, start a new pile alternating the years. Nice going!
You should also clean the chimney , at least once a year maybe twice if You are burning a lot of wood. So you spare more wood and the stove works better and you don't need to fear about soat fire....
Hi there. I’m a. New subscriber from North Carolina. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Honestly it doesn’t get cold enough here on the coast of North Carolina to put in a wood stove. Keep the outstanding videos coming and have a great weekend.
Get some steel wool and clean the rust off ( don't use any water) just use the steel wool dry and use a dry cloth to wipe the rust off. The you will need to get some black stove paint and spray the black stove paint on the stove letting each coat of paint dry it will take about four coats of back stove paint. Once the paint is good and dry then make a fire in the stove to cure the pant. The store should be a 100° to cure the paint good. Then about every two years repeat the pant to keep the stove from rusting. And yes you will have to take the stove outside to pant it for ventilation purposes. I know you don't want to take the stove outside but that's pretty much the only way you're going to have to do it in order to paint it if you don't want the stove to keep rusting.
Years ago we lived on a farm ,we had a wood stove for extra heat. My daughter was three years old, lost her balance and fell against the stove and burned her hands. We couldn’t go to the hospital because a bad snow storm closed the highway. I soaked cloths in water, wrapped her hands and put them in plastic bags. The next morning we went to the hospital. She had third degree burns.luck there was no lasting damage.
For burns you can use fresh egg white. Just separate 2 eggs and put the egg white directly on the burned area. Keep putting it for 2-3 days. I dropped boiling water on my arm and my mom saved my arm with this method.
Same sort of thing happened to my toddler son though he tripped and the side of his belly bounced off the wood stove. It happened so fast. We were able to get him to the hospital right away. He got 3rd degree burn. I fainted when he was screaming as the nurses were holding my son’s legs and arms down so the doctor could take care of the wound. My son is now in his 40’s and still has the scars from that accident. Hard lesson learned that no matter how much you are diligent about your child’s safety things like this do happen. The only other remarkable thing he did at that age was shove fistfuls of goat poop in his mouth because he thought it was chocolate. 😂 His sister ate a slug.😮
I have a cast iron wood burning cook stove. I cleaned the rust with a metal brush But Scrub Only Lightly. Then just smooth it out with a fine grade Sand Paper and again do this lightly. Once you have smoothed the rust spots Buy Rustolium Rust Resistant Liquid PAint. Apply with a brush to get the paint in all the nooks n crannies. After a season of usage try rubbing the stoves all over with good grade machine oil. @thehomeintent I didn't want to sound critical, but I did want to bringvthst to your attention. It's obvious you are very busy and just go at it the best you can. So far , I really liking your channel. Best of luck on your adventure.
You should not have your baby around the stove hot or not hot they won’t know the difference and get burned very badly … you should have a gate around it all the time

There's a product called Stove Blacking that you can just brush on. Your stove will look brand new.
You tube has easy recipes for homemade vinegar.❣

Suggested: put up protective fence around the stoves to prevent inevitable toddler burns. God bless.
I had a wood stove I found newspaper wet did a great job as we don’t have news papers much these days
Your place is so beautiful and rustic. ❤❤
Thanks, we're loving it here!
We had a similar wood stove and sprayed painted with extreme high temp matte black paint to seal any rust.
Best cleaning product for the sooth on the glass of your wood fire is strong cold black tea
I have the same peel and stick floor tile in our bathroom for five years now. It’s held up perfectly.

Ospho is a liquid chemical that neutralizes rust. I have used it on different metals including galvanized roofing. The rust turns to dust that you can wipe/brush off. I’m not sure if it is appropriate for wood stoves but definitely check into it.
Oh, thanks for the tip! I will look into that.

Yes, add a bit of water and stir.
Hi, my mom used to clean her wood stove top with fine sandpaper ( by hand ) . Maybe try that? In a corner and see if it works for you.
Thanks, I will!
It looks like u need to replace ur rope around the doors of ur stoves all u do is get a glue and new rope.. also u can buy a black polish to polish the outside of ur stove..😊
Love ur stuff goodluck
Thanks!!
First of all not using an abrasive on the glass will make it last longer and if you happen to get any stubborn tar on the glass use newspaper and ammonia but wear a mask and keep children out of the room while you do it. Also you may need to renew your stove rope next spring as it does gradually compress and leave gaps.
Never ammonia
A bit of wd40 on those window tracks will keep them gliding easily. A drop or two of mineral oil would work too.
Thanks for the tip!
Don't know if you tried coke to get the rust off your wood stove but it's really good for removing rust
I haven’t tried that, thanks for the tip!

Thank you! We're in Alberta

Use Little bit kerosene oil with soft cloth to clean stove

Stove black after getting rust off
Do you have a hoe? If so, you can use it to reach the spots that you could not get easily with your shovel.
We don’t but we want one for the garden anyway. Good idea!
मुर्गी का घर बहुत सुन्दर है
What part of Canada are you in
Alberta!
U have to be careful of chicken manure as it is high in lime a lot of plants don’t like lime
Im going to suggest not having the kids on you back, I keep seeing tge little one lean to the side to see what your doing out in the brush. Her eyes are at risk, and mice frequent chicken coops...Haunta virus . Invest in a good sturdy playpen you can move transport around.
You make some good points, thanks!
@thehomeintent I didn't want to sound critical, but I did want to bringvthst to your attention. It's obvious you are very busy and just go at it the best you can. So far , I really liking your channel. Best of luck on your adventure.
A playpen with toys would work well
You should not have your baby around the stove hot or not hot they won’t know the difference and get burned very badly … you should have a gate around it all the time
Thank. Pray to Jesus for guidance
Save yourself a ton of time and use cheap dollar oven cleaner.
Wearing thin plastic gloves help, and the baby would have been safe in a pram near you watching.
Baby doesn’t need to BREATHE all that dust and dearie .
That baby carrier not good for childs posture/ neck. Wow!
