    I never understood why anyone would own a lizard until today. I found a tiny hatchling and rescued him from a large postal box I have on my porch. I'm researching all I can find. He seems very slow and skinny. I've become rather attached, in just a short amount of time. I've always been afraid of the large ones, but I had to pick this one up to get him out. Wish me and my new baby luck.

      @@cubanopati mealworms aren’t healthy for their staple diet. They’re fatty, difficult to digest, and not the most nutritious feeder. They often make geckos overweight. It’s best to feed mainly live crickets, roaches, silkworms, or black soldier fly larvae. Superworms and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better. I just adopted a baby Leo on Thursday and I am completely in love! I'm not sure of the gender yet as they are only 2-3 months old, but I've been calling them "Mr. Stubbs" because they are currently regrowing their tail. 😆 I was a fan of your videos even before I got Stubbs, but since then they've been invaluable to us! I currently have Stubbs in a 20 gallon long with reptile carpet substrate, a log hide on the cool side with a log bridge stretching from the top of the log to the entrance of a moss cave, a large piece of Mopani wood that I covered with moss in the center, several large river rocks scattered about for extra climbing surfaces, a water dish, and on the warm side a nice sized step pyramid hide with a realistic fake fern hanging over it. I have a heat mat under the pyramid, and an incandescent day bulb and a tropical UVB for light/heating, and I'm buying a ceramic heat emitter tomorrow for nighttime heat. I also have a dig box, calcium Dish, and poop tray on order from Stroodies on Etsy that should be arriving soon! I've currently been feeding him a rotating diet of small crickets and mealworms, with Calcium (no D3) and multivitamin on the schedule you recommended. I'm planning on adding small dubia roaches and grasshoppers to the rotation too! I'm just obsessed, lol. Thank you so much for loving Geckos and teaching the world how to care for them! ❤️

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just some advice: Carpet isn’t a good substrate unfortunately, it harbours bacteria and tends to get caught on their teeth and claws. It’s recommended to quarantine new reptiles on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor their health. After, good options include zoo med’s reptisoil, a mix that’s 60% top/potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude. A dig box alone doesn’t offer much enrichment.
      I also recommend upgrading to a 40 gallon or bigger at some point.
      There’s likely no need for a CHE, a temperature drop down to 60 at night is fine. You don’t need the heat mat either. What brand is the UVB and what type of bulb is it (compact or tube)?
      Calcium dishes are unnecessary and can potentially do more harm than good.

    • @leahdresser2290
      @leahdresser2290 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightinggale6470 Thank you the advice! I was actually using paper towels before I got the carpet, I'll switch back to that for a couple of weeks then switch to reptisoil! I actually have a bag of it I bought for the dig box so that's perfect.
      It's so funny that you mentioned the 40 gal, because I was just browsing for larger tanks online last night! My birthday is in October so my bf is gifting me with one! Would you recommend anything bigger than a 40 gal?
      I did notice that Stubbs seems more active since getting the CHE, I hope that's not because it's too warm!!! I know I need better bulbs, they are just the typical zoo med bulbs that you find at pet stores. I needed something to start him with but I definitely need better ones. What would you recommend? I was thinking about nixing the heat mat, I went ahead and turned that off!
      Is the calcium Dish potentially harmful because of over-ingestion of calcium? The one I have is very small, holds about a dime-sized amount.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leahdresser2290 definitely go bigger than 40 gallons if you can! Bigger is better, as long as you provide plenty of clutter he’ll love the extra space.
      The bulb I recommend the most is a PAR30 or PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat, they’re the most natural and beneficial option. 50W is generally good for leopard geckos, although you might need a higher wattage for a larger tank. Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option.
      Yeah, they can potentially ingest too much calcium with calcium dishes. A tiny dish probably won’t do any harm but also isn’t necessary, dusting on a schedule is enough :)

    • @leahdresser2290
      @leahdresser2290 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightinggale6470 Thank you so much for all of your advice! I will purchase those bulbs you suggested asap! I just love watching him grow and become tamer and more confident!

Yes your lizard will get out but you can get some wood ( with holes in ) from bnm and places like that. I use tbat to block uo the gap and to help with the air flow when it is so hot ..
      I hope this helps

    My leo screamed the day I got him when the lady lifting his hide spooked him. Also a week after getting him when I sprayed down the tank. He had a fear of water and mist for like 3 months. Was also a red flag that he would spook easy and then would have a bad temper, but eh 🤷‍♀️

    I am definitely getting a crested gecko now:)
    I have enough food for my other animals for awhile and I already have the enclosure and around 70$ for the crested gecko
    August 15th, I'm getting my first animal not from PetSmart, which is great cus their not, I really hope I'm way better than with my other animals, especially because I was not good with my leo's (and corn snake but there's more reasons for that) :\
    But I already have the enclosure, a heat mat for when it starts getting colder, and a bit of food, and I'll have enough for the enclosure things and the gecko,I know this isn't Leopard gecko orientated but I'm just really happy:)

      @leopardgeckotalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah cool, make sure the tank is minimum 45 x 45 x 60cm as this is the minimum for an adult, and I'd advise an over head heater with a thermostat for heating a crestie, but make sure you get a thermostat, because they dont need a ton of heat.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heat mats aren’t a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

    What is the tank brand and size for your leopard gecko I'm getting one soon and I'm looking for cages

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure which enclosures she uses. Although aim for a 40 gallon (36x18x18”) or bigger. You could use a glass enclosure (I recommend front opening) such as Exo Terra or another brand, or PVC (which is great but expensive unfortunately). Check secondhand sites for cheap used tanks, that’s how I got mine.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Setsuna Umbreon nope. A 20 gallon long is the bare minimum, 40 gallons is the recommended size. Leopard geckos can be quite active, and benefit from more room for a better temperature gradient and more enrichment. Most bigger reptiles need larger than 40 gallons. Care standards change and improve over time. Many things considered ‘standard’ are becoming outdated.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Setsuna Umbreon you can often find cheap used tanks being sold on secondhand sites, that’s how I got my 40 gallon.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re very unlikely to drop their tail as long as you don’t grab it. Give them at least a few more days to adjust. Then, try hand feeding. Put your hand in the enclosure daily. See if they’ll climb on. Be patient.

    I got my leopard gecko from pet smart and she was about Maui’s size, about 3 or 4 months ago, and she has so far not had a problem with any of the crickets or meal worms, I think she’s a baldi morph and she’s adorable.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For future reference please don’t buy animals from PetSmart, they’re not a good company to support.
      Keep in mind that mealworms aren’t healthy for their main diet and should make up no more than 25% of their diet. Live crickets, roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Super worms and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better.

    i’ve been trying to tame my new gecko and it doesn’t like me no matter what i try. Every time i put my hand near it, it will try to bite me. Ive tried your taming techniques and put somthing that smelt like me in it and have fed it a couple time and i have held it like 5 times, but it was hard to get it in my hand. but now it will only bite me. what do i do now? i’ve had it for a couple months now. should i just find a better home for it since it doesn’t like me? We have a 3-4 month old leopard gecko and he doesn't poo on a regular basis. I feed him between 5-7 crickets daily and he is active and curious. Is this because he is settling - we have only had him for two weeks? He did start pooing everyother day at the end of the first week but then we added another hide and a plant to give him more coverage.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. First of all, any heat source must be plugged in to a thermostat to regulate the temperature and prevent it from overheating and burning the gecko. You also need a temperature gun to measure surface temps.
      Secondly, heat mats aren’t a good heat source.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They need to be separated ASAP. Each should ideally have their own 40 gallon or bigger as adults.
      They’re drinking when you’re not looking. As for how to know if they’re eating: simply watch them hunt, or tong/hand feed.

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No i think it'll get messy. Best to use some slate or vinyl tiles (not self adhesive) if you want a base.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s no need for a base when using loose substrate. Also, eco earth isn’t a great substrate. It’s unnatural, dusty when dry, hard on their joints, and more likely to cause impaction than a more natural substrate. Good options include zoo med’s reptisoil, a mix that’s 60% top/potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude.
