What people always seem to forget is that game freak doesn't have much expirence with this stuff, they have been releasing pretty much the same type of games for years, the same battle and catch mechanics, the same veiw and style, this was a step out of their own comfort zone and while it really isn't as polished as it should be it is indeed a step in the right direction that we really needed, graphically it is awful but pokemon was never about the grass or trees, it was about the incredible monsters that even now look incredible

In BOTW sometimes you would see the dragons and you were like “what!!!!, im gonna go up there at some point and fight that thing”. Thats what we mean by “the world coming to life.” Theres stuff thats inaccessible, there are things to do. Use a golem to open up a cave. Use a gyrados to make a whirl pool that brings a cool item from the bottom of a lake. A whalelord breaches off in the distance. You walk up on pokemon fighting and catch both of them. You can see tracks on the ground and follow them. You use growlithe to sniff out pokemon or items. You see a herd of Rapidash that get scared and start a forest fire. You join the squirtle squad and fight fires. Those are just a few ideas.

While the outside company made bdsp, Game freak divided into two groups. One group was developing PLA and the other group been developing Pokémon scarlet and violet. Many ppl think bdsp came out and they started developing and made arceus a few months later. Same with the new games. These games had their own teams to work on it for years. Most of these games probably been worked on since sword and shield so yes these games are getting the 2+ year develop time they need, So it’s not like they are as a whole just developing games after games. Agree with what you said. To be fair, they had to release 1 game per year. So PLA is likely a test of water and we will see things more fully realized in Gen 9. Imagine if we could:
      - Come across Pokemons foraging; throwing berries to lure these Pokemons will be extra effective because they're hungry. By the same logic, Pokemons that aren't hungry will be less responsive to thrown berries.
      - If the Pokemon sees you throw the berries, depending on that Pokemon's disposition (e.g., some species or individuals might be less gullible) and hunger level, that Pokemon might instead investigate the source of the berries.
      - During mating season, some Pokemon species become more territorial than usual. In the real world, many species of animals (especially the males) become extra aggressive to defend their territories in mating season.
      - You might come across Pokemons engaging in leisure activities, during which they're likely to be in a good mood and become more willing to approach you. What 'leisure activities' consist of depend on the species, e.g., for Machoke, leisure activity means working out (think what they did in Pokemon Snap).
      - Some Pokemon species are solitary. Some species hang out in large herds. Some hang out in small cliques.

I like the direction the Pokemon series is going in, I don't like that Game Freak continues to put in low effort and I don't like that fans continue to reward them for putting in low effort. I'd like to see a Pokemon game being made with a similar level of passion to the Zelda series or Super Smash brothers but I doubt that will ever happen; as long as the fans keep saying "it's good enough, I had fun."
I'm probably just salty that I want to like this literal billion dollar idea, but the "Chef" cant be bothered to properly cook anything with their top tier ingredients. So the outcome usually isn't bad and can even be good, but should be much better then it is.

@@timotheninja I've been playing for about 10+ hours, and for as much as I wish to have battle/held items and abilities, this game wouldn't really work that well with them (at least conceptually). Canonically, Hisuians barely want to do anything at all with Pokemon, so it makes sense why there's no held item option (same goes with breeding). Nobody knows much about Pokemon. Much less how they react with certain items. The only people who actually battle are the Corps, and even then, they barely know anything either.
The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to do away with abilities. Some abilities would be downright clunky to execute, such as weather. Specially since engaging in battle is so seamless.

Many people criticize the graphics, and rightly so, but the gameplay elements are sometimes even worse. But before I get to the downside:
The game has a great idea. A very open world, wild Pokemon that attack you or run away from you, battles without another battle screen and a focus on the story. The UI and menus are great and also features like the constant changeability of attack moves from an attack pool would have belonged in games 20 years ago.
Unfortunately, the game also has a lot of problems. On the negative side:
*(1) The behavior of the Pokemon*
Hide in the grass and watch the Pokemon. What do they actually do? Not much. Each Pokemon has the same AI in its basic behavior. The developers have built in only seven states: running away, being aggressive, not being aggressive (only when provoked), moving a lot, moving a little, not moving at all or sleeping.
Why can't I see a Geodude digging a hole in a mountain? Why don't I see a Starly flying towards a tree, plowing a berry there, and then eating it? Why don't I see a Buizel go into the water and swim a bit? Why don't I see a Plant-Pokemon walk up to flowers and smell them? Why don't I see a bidoof kicking a fir tree and then chewing on fallen branches? Why don't I see a Budew emitting pollen? How come I don't see a Pachirisu climbing a tree top? Why can't I see a Carnivine moving towards a tree, hanging out and waiting for prey?
Why don't I see interactions between Pokemon? What would it be like if some Pokemon played together? Or would share a berry? How about if I observed Pokemon attacking each other after one pushed the other away? Or stole his berry? After all, my job is to create a Pokedex. Then I must be able to see such behavior. The world therefore seems lifeless, regardless of the design of the environment.
*(2) Pokemon have no value anymore*
Actually, the whole point of Pokemon is to make friends with your Pokemon, build a relationship with them, train them and experience things with them. In this game, however, that is hardly possible. My task is to catch 5000 Pokemon, 25 of each species. How can you build a relationship with them? I don't care about the Pokemon I catch. In my opinion, GameFreak has completely lost the focus here. GameFreak should have made two of each species as a task.
And now you're probably asking yourself, "If I only have to catch two Pokemon of each species, then the game is over after three hours, right?" Right. That's the main problem. The game has so little gameplay content that GameFreak has to force you to catch the same Pokemon 25 times and defeat it 15 times so you don't realize how content-less the game actually is. However, I'll get right into how the game could have been fleshed out further.
First: Why does it obey me directly after I caught it? In my opinion, you should first try to build up a bond with the Pokemon. These Pokemon have hardly any experience with humans. Why should they immediately follow them bluntly? How about playing with wild Pokemon or captured ones, feeding them or helping them? For example, you could find an injured Pokemon or rescue one trapped under a large fallen branch. I already mentioned that you can watch wild Pokemon attack each other. That would be a great way to help the injured Pokemon afterwards or even intervene before!
It sounds silly, but what about talking to your Pokemon? You could have a list of activities, from mini-games in town, quests to complete and co, that you could offer your new Pokemon. For example, you could ask your new Pokemon if it would like to explore the area outside of town with you. After that it can nod, shake its head or look away annoyed. In addition, my Pokemon should run with me in the city. There are no other Pokemon there, there is no danger. And it would help so much to feel closer to the Pokemon. That would be something.
And imagine that you have established a relationship with several wild Pokemon in one area. These would then come towards you when they see you. And to distinguish the Pokemon, you could simply introduce that you could give friendly wild Pokemon nicknames, which are displayed with a heart symbol above the head.
How about if they lead you to a secret place or do things in front of you that wild Pokemon wouldn't do? For example, a cricketot that trusts me would have its antennae collide, showing me that it sounds like a xylophone. A Petilil would hand you a leaf from its head, which would go into your pouch as a healing item. Why isn't there a quest where I give petals to a Burmy that trusts me so that it changes its cloak? And these things all fit very well with creating the Pokedex: getting to know their behavior, finding secret things that they wouldn't just show to a trainer.
*(3) The design of the areas*
In a single-player game where the goal is to create a Pokedex, capture Pokemon behavior, and follow a story, you're very often out in nature. As I said, I don't want to address the graphics, others already do that enough. But why are there no points of interest? Legends Arceus is obviously trying to copy Breath of the Wild, but has dug very deep into the trash can when it comes to designing the areas.
It's so hard to tell from a screenshot where you are now. There are no points for orientation, no natural formations and elements that stick in your mind. A big unique tree, a big waterfall, a dense forest, steep mountains and valleys, big chasms and branching caves, dilapidated ruins, something where you think to yourself, "What is that? I'd like to take a look at that." I do want to discover this world!
Also, why are there hardly any obstacles in this wilderness? They could have taken a cue from Breath of the Wild and given us climbing gear from the start to climb very steep mountains and valleys. You could build obstacles that only Ride Pokemon could overcome. I mean, that used to be normal in Pokemon. It worked really well in Sun and Moon.
And you had a great chance here to bring back secret bases. Why can't I drill a hole in the wall in wild areas with a Pokemon (at selected points only, if you want) to set up my temporary storage base, where I could maybe even put in decorative elements? A place where I could sleep and play together with Pokemon. You could even theoretically dig a hole in the ground and build the secret base like a bunker, which you enter from above.
Another option for exploration would be to dive (Gen 3 & Gen 6)! We did get an ocean after all. How cool would it be to be able to dive there? You would only have two minutes without a helmet and you could theoretically craft a diving helmet (or get it with a quest) that would let you dive as long as you want. That way you would have a completely separate area with water pokemon and new underground caves. Exploration!
And the last point on this: Why is there only one city? You could have a few small settlements sporadically like that, with people living in them that you could talk to. Unfortunately, the decision to have only one city has big disadvantages.

If the game was maybe maybe $30~$40 it would be an easy decision. However charging $60 for this seems kinda disgusting when a game like Elden Ring will cost the same

    • @VilasNil
      @VilasNil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@vicenteplantier1756 I do know of people that had this issue, but I personally didn't.
To me, while the tutorial was longer than expected, it is understandable given the major shift from the usual formula, so it requires some explanation. I didn't get bored at all,
I've been heavily invested in the story (which serves as a good change of pace from all the catching and in a lesser ammount battling), and it carried my excitement for the game all the way until the credits rolled. I was so immersed that the game consumed my whole weekend. Yes, it isn't breathtaking nor does it bring anything new to the table, but it's serviceable and fun enough for what it needs to do.
And the story isn't just what you are shown through cutscenes, you also have to take into account the environmental storytelling, how everyone is afraid of Pokémon at first, but slowly you get to show them that they aren't as bad as they could be and the main village gets filled to the brim with Pokémon. You can also feel the ferocity of Pokémon through the different Alfas scattered through the map, which are imposing at first but end up becoming an essential part of the fun for the game, being able to tame them in the process.
I think the game is great, it does have its faults and it isn't for everybody, but it deserves at least to be tried. If you are not into sneaking around catching Pokémon, stay away from the game. If the mechanics appeal to you, you are already late getting it as you'll have loads of fun.

I think GF dipped their toes in the water to see if this new approach would appeal to fans, which it does. They saved alot of development time by releasing this one and chances are they will release a new title with more enhanced game play and graphics from this one.

Im enjoying the game, and it is fun, yes it does get repetitive, but I think the big issue is just how it looks. I find myself wanting to stop playing after a bit just because it's so dull and boring to look at, and then I can't be bothered to catch another 20 of the same pokemon. Just hope next time, they throw more money into graphics, yes, graphics aren't everything, but in this case, it's hard to play a lowkey ugly pokemon game

At this point they can make a game in MS paint and slap the Pokemon name on it and people will buy it. As long as the majority of people accept this, it'll never change in the graphics department.

Had that feeling too but as soon as I got a hang of the new mechanics and the gameplay in general, I got so hooked. Yes it sucks, that the graphics are bad in such an awesome game (gameplay wise), but imo its totally worth playing this one, especially if you are a fan of the series.

The art style was bad when I first saw it but while playing it’s grown on me. Better than the chibi models from the lazy remake BDSP

Its obviously a work in progress.. We used to play this shit with 2 buttons on a tiny green 160x144p screen you couldnt see in the dark. It clearly has never exactly mattered how the game looks.

We needed something new so badly.
It's not perfect, but I love it and where it's going

I’m not finished, but as an “open world title” - it’s underwhelming. As a Pokémon game? This is what I think Pokémon always should have been. Explore a vast area, catch Pokémon, develop a Pokédex, have some “danger” mixed in between. I found myself avoiding certain Pokémon because I didn’t want to fight - and that mechanic, while annoying at times, is so refreshing. It wasn’t cause I didn’t want to battle, it was that I didn’t want to be seen and attacked. You can get in the way of your Pokémon battle and get hit too - that was way too exciting of a realization. There are actually repercussions for the character.
In a not so praiseworthy note - I was really upset with the fact that there were places with no character (on top of the graphical issues). I.e. the Solaceon Ruins, as an example. It was a giant box. There was no feeling of mystery, just an oversized box with not enough in it. They could have done so much more to add life to the world itself to help with the story. Instead, it’s all NPC’s telling you what you need to know, instead of partially discovering it on your own.
I also gotta take off points for the fact that you can see a frame by frame of Pokémon in the distance (seen especially with flying Pokémon). It looks terrible.
Overall gameplay is good for a Pokémon game, open world is alright, environment is meh, and storytelling really should have been more “show, don’t tell”. It’s a decent game, but they could have done so much better

Thats the problem, good for a pokemon game but in game standars is very lacking.
