It’s so sad know that a big part of all of our life’s and are life is gone as of today may 24 2023 when the last mill bell rang it’s always been if you lived in canto your grandpa uncle dad or someone you know worked there and every time I hear this song I will remember that day where the last bell rang - Joshua Webb 2023
Watching this one, yet again, with such pain in my heart for the closing of the mill and yet such pride in the town. Wishing good blessings on those whose jobs were affected.
Buddy Melton is one of the best vocalists in bluegrass today! So glad you have recovered from your accident and continue to bless us with your music! Hope you make it to Kansas to perform someday!
We in Canton will have to figure out how to refine ourselves without the mill. The way we want it and want to drive it for the future. The mill will always be a part of our identity forever irregardless if it's an operating industry or not
Spreading my fandom of Balsam Range into my classroom.....I use this song every year to teach about Productive Resources in my 9th-grade Economics class. Love the band and the music!
My dad always said it smelled lik bread & butter to him. If you don't work, you don't eat. He was a Champion retiree 1962, passed away 1990. He & mom are buried in Bethel Cemerary. Welived in Dutch Cove.
I have lived in Maryland for the last 11 years, but am originally from Canton. I try to get out to Canton to see family whenever I can. I work in healthcare outside of Baltimore and came across an elderly patient with a familiar accent-a western NC accent. She told me she grew up in Canton and she knew my family. It made my day! Thank you for this beautiful song. Canton is a special place.
I heard this song on bluegrass junction about 2 days ago. Great song and I’m not even from canton let alone heard of it since this song, but it’s sad that the mill has closed putting the folk of this great town out of a job.
Proud to live in a town with such history, and a song dedicated to it. I may have not been born here, but I couldn't love this little papertown more. The best part was that at my graduation (which happened earlier the year I'm writing this), they played this song after we all got our diplomas and walked out of the auditorium. I may have not known all the words, but I was singing along with this song, and so was my older sister up in the stands. It was truly a magical moment. Also really fun to watch the video and say "Hey, I know that spot!"
I had to watch the video and hear the song again. Such a great music video... whoever did that for you really did a fantastic job. The song itself and all the musicians are good looking and well dressed like they were from around there and it was nice to see the faces behind the voices. I hope more bands can pick their best song and make videos as well.. Good Job again!
This song has more special meaning to those of us who live in Canton, North Carolina, with the announcement of the impending closure of the paper mill.
Honestly, in the surrounding towns as well. I'm 30 minutes away. I always heard about the mill growing up. A group of friends and I would get together for games last year and now another group are starting a project out there. It's sad to see the plant inactivate.
From Raleigh but my dad grew up in Gastonia, where his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents all grew up working in (and often stayed working) the cotton mill across the street. I still own one of the mill houses!
My dad worked in the mill 34 years. He and my mother are buried in Locust Field Cemetery. I married my high school sweetheart and we left there in 1948. I still call Canton my home.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL video and BEAUTIFUL music. I have memories of spending time in Waynesville in the summers and riding with my Dad to Asheville, passing Canton and the Enka paper plant with its distinct odor.
Great bluegrass.......lookin forward to your band , "The Roys" and all the local talent lined up at Rogersville,N.B. and New Richmond,Quebec next two weeks, August 2014 . Thanks for sharin your music.
You guys deserve it. Congratulations. We 'll look for you in a MD town and won't miss it. Like Avalon Theater in Easton MD. Tony Rice and Sierra Hall blew it out there.
Proud my Daddy worked in the mill for a lot of years. He worked hard leaving home at 430 am and we waited on him for supper at 630 pm Its where we call home. Best Bluegrass Band and yep we got to pick and learn from them. Alan King jr Rye Holler
I would like to know which one of the band members are kin to the cairnes. am the wife of Marvin cairnes. of Hendersonville. am doing a family tree. the cairnes over here and the cairnes of their are kin thanks
This is one reason why i love this music, they tell stories of the "Good Ole Days", back when good ole country folks and many others were just doing what they could to make a decent living and go about their own way, i say God Bless Appalachia, now i can't say i know these hardships, but as a man of History at least i'm willing to look back and understand the hard times these folks went though, so i can better understand how we Today came to be. Any-who, Love the song :)
Paper Mill Fights EPA Controls : Jobs vs. Pollution: 2 States Clash Over River Cleanup There was a time when the 75-mile-long Pigeon River was an ideal spot for catching trout, taking a swim, drawing drinking water and performing church baptisms. Rising in the majestic Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina, the stream flowed crisp and clean over a pebbly bed in a northwesterly direction until it joined the French Broad River near Knoxville in eastern Tennessee. But all that was before the Champion paper company built a pulp mill in the early 1900s in the North Carolina community of Canton, about 20 miles downstream from the Pigeon’s headwaters. Now, as a result of eight decades of pollution, beyond Canton and into Tennesse, the once-pristine river has become a fetid sewer that Tennesseans say looks like Coca-Cola, smells like rotten eggs and is laced with potent carcinogenic dioxins www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-07-11-mn-3639-story.html
34 minutes ago, that whistle blew for the last time in over 100 years. Canton is resillent and will come back from this!

CANTON, NC March 2023
Century-old NC paper mill that employs 1,100 to abruptly close, mayor says small town's soul being ripped out.
And in June 2023, they’re shutting the old mill down. Damn it’s sad
It hurts to listen to this song since the mill is shutting down, makes me cry
Same Junior - josh Webb

They gonna have to sit down and write another verse.

Hard to believe the mill is shutting down. I read that at one time it was the largest such mill in the U.S. To everything there is a season, I guess.

My family came out of West Madison county to have steady employment. Your music touches many hearts. Yes. It's a part of home.

This song really hits home now with the mill closing…

We used to clean up train derailment at the plant. There was some very good people who ran that plant
Love 'em !!!!!!!!!!!!
Canton Pride
I´m curious, can someone find a video of Balsam Range where the banjoplayer doesn´t smile? He's always in good mood it seems
He's smiling because maybe because he's that good a banjo player!
blkjock81 That's Grammy award winner, Marc Pruett, and his smile is as genuine as the man who wears it!
Because Marc is ALWAYS smiling, when he plays and when he is just around town. Always smiling.
Even when he is not performing, he smiles really often. And his humor is great. Takes little to get him laughing.
You can't not smile when u pik a banjer!!!! Believe me I know!!!!"Flash"
Love this song!
