In this video, "How to Construct Rectangular Earrings with Rice Paper Beads," I demonstrate how to make these beautiful earrings in easy to follow, step by step instructions.
The earrings consist of concentric rectangles that frame elegant rice paper beads, and the rectangular forms for each earring are made from one continuous length of 18 gauge wire. The forming technique used to create the concentric rectangles is similar to the method that I use to make the spiral in the Egyptian link, only now the concentric shapes are rectangles instead of circles. The beautiful earwires that the earrings are attached to are individually hand-crafted. Learn how to make this style earwire by watching my instructional video, "How to Make Basic Earwires, by Ross Barbera."
A distinctively unique element of these earrings is the incorporation of a rice paper bead in the center of each earring. The rice paper has been delicately tinted with watercolor, and transformed into a hard material by the application of water based varnish.
The construction of these earrings requires the use of a variety of jewelry pliers. They include: round nose pliers, bent nose pliers, chain nose pliers, side cutters and bail making pliers. I also use a chasing hammer to work harden the wire by carefully hammering the earrings on a steel block. This forging process improves the look and strength of the earrings.
One final note, the jewelry objects that you see created in my videos are original designs by me, Ross Barbera. These designs may be copied for your personal use only, but may not be offed for sale or exhibition without written permission from Ross Barbera.

Hi - I get the rice paper on line from several art supply websites - Sax Art and Dick Blick are two examples. The rice paper at Sax is called Imperial Kinwashi, if you would like to give that a try. I also have a few students who have tried gift wrapping tissue paper and have had success. Hope this helps! -Ross
Bellissimi sarebbe fantastico un tutorial in italiano
I like the information for making the corners sharper. Honestly, I don't really like the wonkiness of the 15 corner results. I did learn a lot by watching this video though especially bending it perpendicular and then bending up is shear genius. Not only can you use the rice paper bead, another long similar size bead can be used, such as a beautiful glass bead. Maybe even a stone if ever one could be found this size and round. Thank you!
Couldn't find the Imperial Kinwashi at Sax Art. Maybe they have discontinued it.
Thanks for watching!
