  • Christmas is coming, and nothing says yuletide cheer like a Shane Black flick. For this installment of "The Best Movie You Never Saw", we're taking a look at one of Black's highest-selling spec scripts of all-time, "The Long Kiss Goodnight", which got turned into a stone-cold classic by director Renny Harlin ("Die Hard 2", "Cliffhanger") who re-teamed with his then-wife, Geena Davis, who plays a meek schoolteacher with amnesia who turns out to be a badass assassin. Samuel L. Jackson co-stars and has gone on record about how it's one of his favorite roles ever.
So why wasn't "The Long Kiss Goodnight" a mega-hit? It has a lot to do, unfairly, with the film Davis/Harlin did just before, "Cutthroat Island", but thankfully the film has picked up a major cult following in the years since. Join us as we take a look at this holiday classic.

Long Kiss Goodnight turns 25 today!
I remember watching it 10 years ago and bought the DVD
Such a masterful performance from Geena Davis that manages to offset a nonsensical plot of a split personality and stopping a terrorist plot at Niagara Falls
Yet it did predict a 9/11 scenario with the blame being placed solely on the Muslims to counteract budget cuts
Davis as this assassin turns the character into a damning indictment of the restrictive stereotypes applied to women on screens and in life
I like her daughter played by a young Yvonne Zima, when she's in danger it brings out the maternal instincts to protect her
Makes a story about rejecting the dichotomy and forging a distinct path
Davis did most of her own stunts
Samuel L. Jackson is charming too making a good buddy cop mixed-gender addition, this is actually his favorite film of his
Both characters as outsiders allow plenty of empathy
I like Brian Cox and David Morse too
It's one of my favorite action movies by Renny Harlin even though it underperformed at the box office
Plenty of sharp dialogue by Shane Black although some of it misfires
Stinks the movie signaled the end of Davis' career as a bankable star yet she's done well for herself fighting the patriarchy with the Gender in Media in 2004 establishing her own institute
She continues to research gender and other minority roles in film and television and advocate for more on-screen diversity
Long Kiss Goodnight is a captivating example of the genre and a modest feminist triumph and works as a satire of traditional spy thrillers while having substance
The other good news is that Harlin and Jackson want to make a sequel

We saw this movie in Annapolis, MD. 8 Naval Cadets were on leave from the Academy, sitting in the row in front of us. We were talking with them for 15 minutes before the movie started. They were laughing how they almost hit a deer on the way to the theater, and were laughing about it. When the scene happened where the deer crashed through the window, the whole theater started laughing and couldn't stop for the rest of the film. Everything that was supposed to be shocking and tragic just made us laugh harder.
It was like a theater full of Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow.
We all had a great time...and have never been able to match the energy of that night.
    I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

I only heard of this movie about 5 months ago and just finished watching it an hour ago. i was born in 1989 so i grew up watching a lot of 90s and late 80s action films and i go out of my way to find good films of that era to watch so i have no idea how this movie went under my radar for so long but i WISH i saw this movie years ago because it was amazing. i did see Cutthroat Island as a child though and loved it.

I have even had arguments with significant others and family members and rescheduled visits during Christmas time because I have to have my marathon each year. Yeah, I'm a little stubborn, but it's tradition, lol

I saw this when I was 5 when my parents rented it from Blockbuster, but at that time I knew it was good and forgot the name. Years later I saw it air on TV again and even now I like Geena's character more than any modern female assassin character like Atomic Blonde or Black Widow. It was truly ahead of its time!

This movie was ahead of its time. The action delivered. The way AAWiL style dream sequences were used to illustrate Baltimore’s fractured psyche put a slightly macabre spin on the “assassin with amnesia” trope. Also, the chemistry between Davis and Jackson was genuine and engaging. Definitely one of the 90’s best offerings.

Found this one in my mom's DVD stash when I had been watching Coyote Ugly, and the original Tomb Raider series.
Break it out seasonally as one would with Steel Magnolias.
It's an absolute staple to the 80's action blockbuster. Atomic Blonde and Peppermint absolutely follow in Charlie Baltimore's footsteps as cold blooded assassins with a heart of gold. Glad Charlize took up the mantle as an action hero. Davis, Theron, and Jackson would make a very solid take on the contemporary spy considering what Samuel L, Reynolds, and Hayek are doing with the Hitmans Bodyguard. A lighthearted yet serious perspective of the government underworld, very parallel to what John Wick has been doing. The "Red" franchise was also a very thrilling revival franchise, and true to heart for action heroes like Cox and Willis, combing the soap and drama in a neat take with the outrageous Mary-Louise Parker.
However again, with Charlize Theron's hit as the Old Guard in 2020, combing elements of the spy and superhero genre and confirmation of Atomic Blonde 2, there's much hope for the femme fatales, which have undeniably become a genre of their own.

I saw it with my blonde girlfriend at Christmas '96. She must have been inspired by Geena Davis's makeover ("Charlie"), because she surprised me with a similar makeover--she got a new, short hairstyle and started wearing eyeliner. Wow! It was my favorite Christmas present. Oh, yeah, and it's a kick-ass action movie. Over the top, but fun. Samuel Jackson was funny and Geena was hotter than ever.

You know it's written by Shane Black because the man is incapable of writing a movie not set at Christmas.
I'm enjoying this series but I've seen all of these films. I am glad you're bringing these films to people's attention. There are some genuinely amazing movies that everyone should see. I was just watching Innerspace the other day and it is so good. I do prefer Alien Nation the series but the film's good too. Falling Down, Dragon, Showdown in Little Tokyo is sorely underrated. It's a nice reminder to revisit some of these films but how have more people not seen these movies? The Rocketeer deserved a sequel. Equilibrium has amazing action. Reign of Fire is just awesome. ExistenZ has really stuck with me. I love The Frighteners. The original cut though. The extended cut doesn't do anything for me. I love The Black Hole but I don't know if I could tell you exactly why. It's just one of those movies I watched repeatedly as an impressionable youngster. You should whack Tango and Cash in there somewhere. While on Shane Black I think more people need to see The Last Boy Scout. Remind us of the time when Bruce Willis actually enjoyed one of the highest paid jobs in the world that's relatively easy to do as long as you can read and play pretend. Keep up the good work all. It is much appreciated. Thanks for the WTF happened to Geena Davis too. It's a perfect companion piece.
