The slave trader says that Kaladin was a deserter, so the implication is that slavery is a punishment for specific crimes, not what happens to losers in battle.
The deathrattles are something that makes a lot more sense on a reread but apparently, according to Sanderson, one of them is a glimpse of the ending of the whole 10-book series.
Holy fuck, there is a lot of foreshadowing here. I feel like I can barely comment on anything without spoilers. Very excited for you to experience these books.
This is such a great series to read like this, Sanderson is so good at sprinkling in little hints and secrets throughout his stories. I think you'll very much enjoy the journey!
I said it last week, I say it again: loving your journey already. To Kaladin beeing sold as a slave: yes, the fight in the Cenn chapter was just a border dispute between to highprinces of the same nation. It is hinted at, that they abuse the fact, that the main army is at the shattered plains to avenge the dead king. PS: Jasnah is spoken with a y sound. basically yasnah. And for shallan you have to look it up, I cannot describe it. XD
Joy! I'm rereading parts of this book - mostly to get ready for book 5 in a few months. You might want to remember that statement you made at 4:45 you say you like Kaladin as a character because he "doesn't have to try hard to stick to their principles because that's unrealistic". You hit on something there, but not the way you think. Love the reviews.
I mentioned in a reply, but I'll post as a direct video comment too: The video title says "Part 1" and you say it's discussing until Chapter 7. I suppose you probably meant "the first portion" or "beginning few chapters" of Way of Kings not "Part 1" of the Way of Kings, as "Part 1" is a specifically labeled portion of the book. "Part 1" is until Chapter 11 (the different parts are separated by the Interludes).
LEs gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo we will see how these play out eh..... haha People often complain about the start of this book but personally, i think it's phenomenal. Sets you up for a massive story straight up - enjoy man.
This video and a chunk of these comments will be aged even by the time you rock up to the next video. But that is the great part with early predictions. You go with the limited info and let your mind go wild. Then later as you have enough world/character knowledge, the general theory crafting and end story predictions come in. Great video as always
Really enjoy getting to see someone's perspective on a first read. Jasnah is pronounced as if the J were a Y, just letting ya know cause there's no way you could unless you hear it.
I would like to mention that the book is splitted to 5 parts, so you don't have to cut in a middle of a part (though it might screw up your weekly update schedule)
It's not clear where you stopped, but it's made fairly clear in the beginning that Kaladin has been a slave for a while, and has tried to escape multiple times.

If you care, it doesn't really matter, but the audiobook pronounces it ShallARN and (j)Yasnah (y instead of j). Sanderson has said you can pronounce however you like.
Pronunciations for future videos: Szeth - Zeth Shallan - Shah-Lahn Jasnah - Yaz-Nah Tvlukv - Two-Vluh-Kov (idk if you will need this one but it is a weird ass word to pronounce lol)

I really hope you continue with this for the whole book! If’s like reading it for the first time all over again. I’m really enjoying it.
That's the plan!
These are so fun to watch. :)

You’re correct, the assassin’s name does sound like Zeth.
Didnt see anyone mention, but Jasnah is pronounced with a soft "ya" sound. "Yas-nah." No big deal, I assumed it was "Jazz-nah" at first too.

Shall-on
@@benbenedictfyu63284 nah, more like shallaaan but the a spoken in a latin way, not the english way.
Every time i hear Shallan's name i remember that Plumbus tv show from Rick and Morty
Sha-Lahn
I'm really looking forward to the next step in this Journey! Loving the predictions and rationale.
Off to a great start!

Szeth is read like "Zeth", :D
The lady from the Nobel family, her name sounds like Sha-lawn. 😊
or Shuh-lawn
or Sha-lahn
First read through I was all about Shallan's storyline. On subsequent read throughs, I prefer Kaladin's.
I find Kaladins storyline is more engaging as a story but Shallans has more to pick up on during my reread

Yeah you are right, I suppose I misspoke because he wasn’t actually doing a job of a slave in the cage
@conorreads Where did you stop btw? It wasn't really clear to me in the video.
