- Thumri and Dadra are perhaps the most evocative of classical forms that give expression to the supreme emotion of love in all its colours and dimensions. Apart from Khayal, Tappa and Tarana, the Gwalior Gharana also has a strong link with Thumri singing. The great grandson of Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan of Rampur, Rashid Khan is adept at singing Thumris of his native place, Uttar Pradesh. All the songs sung in this album by the artist are old, traditional Thumris, except the Dadra Baaton Baaton Mein in Mishra Pahadi, composed by his maternal uncle, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.

He was such a talented artist , and a versatile one! You needed a genius to understand his genius…. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Vasant Sathe ji and some great other artists of his time recognised his talent! He was a prodigy, a musical genius at a tender age. He achieved a lot at a tender age, received awards and unfortunately left us too early…. Will live in the hearts of millions! ❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

গান যখন চলছে তখন তার মধ্যে বিজ্ঞাপন না দিলেই কি নয়?! এটা অসম্ভব বিরক্তি ঘটায় যখন কিনা শ্রোতা গানের সঙ্গে একাত্ম হয়ে থাকে! এই ভাবে বিজ্ঞাপন দেওয়াটা, গান শুরু হওয়ার আগে বা শেষ হওয়ার পরে হলে, খুশী হবো!

Hello Marcia. If you get the CD, you can get explanatory notes in the booklet which you might find useful. However, words in such music are less important than emotions they invoke. And you’ve been enchanted by this fur decades, you’re well ahead of many who understand the words and have missed the rendition. 🙏

Even as the river beckoned the boatman refused to listen as I pleaded with him to take me to the other side. The river ran when my Beloved listened.

Mora saiyaan (my beloved) bulavey (calls) adhi raat ko (in the middle of the night)
My beloved has called me in the middle of the night.
Nadiya (the river) beyri (enemy) bhaye (has become)
(But) The river has turned into an enemy.. [because it is preventing our meeting.]
Nadiya beyri, naao (boat) purani (old), khevat (boatman) suney (listens) nahi (not) baatein (talk/ speech)
(How impossible) The enemy river is stopping me, the boat is old (and unfit), and the boatman refuses to listen to my pleas (to take me across)
In a tone of tormented restlessness slipping into despair at the hopelessness.
The second song is a play on the word
Shyam. It means both Krishna and Evening.
Shyam (Evening) bhayi bin (without) Shyam (Krishna)
The day is ending.. it has turned into the evening and yet I am without my dear Krishna.
Sakhi (sister/ friend) Mora suna (empty) lagey (feels) dhaam ( house)
(And so) My sister-like friend, my house feels empty and lifeless.
Saaj dasat (bite) hai man (mind) ko morey
(And so) Music (instruments) bites my mind. Repulses and revolts me.
