    My Daddy used to clean them with sulfuric acid. I remember when I was a kid we had kids plastic swimming pools all over the yard :) He was so tolerant of it, he could put his hands in that bubbling mess and pull out a coppper slab, so shinny.
    I spent so many of my summers as a kid digging in mines and going to mineral shows with my Dad and his diggin partners.
    Those Japanese twins paid our bills while he was dying from Cancer... maybe it is was all that sulfuric acid 😅
    Love your vid's ... you remind me of those days and my Dad :) and digging in dirt ...

    I have always added the crystals to water and let it soak for half an hour prior to adding the iron out. This allows the water to penetrate all the cracks and crevices before the iron out. I have heard this prevents having the chemicals build up and eventually possibly leech out of your specimen causing it to be slightly toxic. I also usually let specimens soak in clean water for a few hours after removing them from the iron out solution.
    Lovely pieces! I especially love the California amethyst !
    Cheers from N.C.

    You might want to add notes for the safety of your viewers. Pressure washers can cut through flesh very easily, depending on the tip you use. If you are going to hand hold it, wear your rubber acid gloves, it adds a layer of safety.

      Terrific video. VERY helpful for those of us newbie rock hounds just starting out. I've been collecting stones and cystals for years (I just turned 55) but only recently started digging for them. As luck would have it, I recently came home with about thirty pounds of quartz and Rose quartz. Many with rust stains and had no clue how to get it out. And don't worry too much about a script. You do just fine.

    For those of you wondering what "iron out" is : just checked the MSDS, it's plain old oxalic acid.
    I'd be more worried about having my bare hands in a pressure washer's stream than about that chemical.
    (good call on the glasses though).

    • @brentonmah3258
      @brentonmah3258 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      piranha031091 actually, turns out the composition depends on the type of iron out product: www.mindat.org/mesg-19-416220.html
      I always found that (Super) Iron Out was a very safe chemical, so I had to research what you said earlier, and I was surprised to find that the liquid version contains oxalic acid, while the powdered version has sodium dithionite/hydrosulfite which is safer and I’m more familiar with. Also, oxalic acid is a lot more destructive to other minerals than sodium dithionite (irrelevant for quartz however), so perhaps in the end one should carefully consider the type of (Super) Iron Out product to buy.

    • @TheCrystalCollector
      @TheCrystalCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the powder form isn’t oxalic and the safest thing out there that works so well. Unlike muriatic it oxalic if gotten on skin it has only the slightest irritation for most people.

    • @IwasMMAbeforeyouwere
      @IwasMMAbeforeyouwere ปีที่แล้ว

      The point about the pressure washer stands though. Put your hands in front of my 3100 PSI and you’re likely to lose some skin.

    Hiya from Australia I have been loving and collecting crystals and all things from underground, in a very small way! My biggest problem is when we retired, I had help packing and most of the labels and history was lost! Lately I have been checking sites and love yours. You name everything and even though sometimes, we must have nicknames, I recognise the crystals! In Jan,2019, I am going to photograph and video all my pick-ups, presents and shop/stall bought treasures and upload so that peeps may be able to help me! PS. I had a look at Erika Lopez site and the rock is quite pretty, I would love to own it ⚒🇦🇺. Cheers Karyn

    Funny that you are posting this now. We took two trips to Diamond Hill this week and was searching the TH-cam for answers to cleaning. Ended up using muriatic acid, which works, but it stinks, burns if you touch it and fumes something awful. Plus, you have to neutralize it. Next time: iron out. Are you going to Hogg Mine Saturday July 7th for the dig? I kind of think that Diamond Hill has been plucked to death, but I've asked Gina to let me know when they move more dirt. This will be my first go at Hogg Mine and I'm only accustomed to surface mining. I'd love to be your shadow and learn!!

    Did you get your herks from NY? I know there's a few other places they grow so can never be sure. I was looking it up to see if it's safe to clean mine with iron out and found your video. After I'd already had them soaking in it for half the day cause I'm smart like that. 😄 I live about 4-5hrs from Herkimer NY. I wish I could have a full on conversation with you about your crystal adventures and ask you like a thousand questions. If you mine stones for a living, you're so lucky, I'd do just about anything to do that for a living. 👍💎✌

      @@TheCrystalCollector Hell yeah, for real... You should lmk next time you plan on coming out this way, maybe we could meetb up out there I'd seriously love to talk to you about all your mining excursions, and you just seem like a genuinely cool dude. We always camped at Crystal Grove at Herkimer. The last guy that owned it was really cool but somebody bought him out and now the people they've got running it are not that great, to put it nicely. Did you hear the Herkimer Diamonds Gift Shop burned down last year? There's also a fossil park out here, probably about 20-25mins from me, I'd say probably about 15-20min drive from Buffalo. It's call Penn Dixie Fossil Mining and Nature Preserve.

    Thank you for your excellent videos! Because of you I went to the Little Pine Mine in NC for garnet collecting! I was thrilled with my finds...BUT I'm having trouble removing the mica from the garnets with the suggested method at the mine. How would you remove mica from garnets?

    • @TheCrystalCollector
      @TheCrystalCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can sometimes soak them in water for long periods to loose up the mica a bit, but if you can polish them they become outstanding! I’m hoping to make a video soon on how this is done. So awesome you made it there!!!!🙌🙌🙏💎💎💎

    I have been waiting for a video like this for so long. The information and process / technique's out here on the web are few and far between, not to mention a little hard to grasp for ppl just starting out. Any chance you might be up to the Bancroft Rockhound Gemboree this year? I know there will be quite a few ppl interested to meet you and hear some of your tips and tricks of the trade.

    • @TheCrystalCollector
      @TheCrystalCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No because it’s not penetrating the crystal lattice. But great question! 👏👏. Also takes some radiation

    Hey!!!! So my friend Solomon found a HUGE chunk of quartz. It was so dirty though! So I will definitely tell him about this. Also, I love gems and crystals. Our classes is studying rock and crystals. We also are going to a gem mine soon! Hopefully I get some good stuff, like rose quartz (my favorite), quartz, amethyst, bornite, or maybe even some orange calcite!!!

    I was relaxing in my hotel room in Rogers Arkansas the day before my adventures to the Jim Coleman mine when your notification for the video came on for the iron out cleaner. This stuff works great and cheaper to buy as well. I took your advice and tried it on less desirable pieces and now they're more desirable than before. Have you tried Jim's mine yet? Our next trip we will go try Ron's and then the others. Keep making great videos!

    BryGuy, what is that black stuff that comes out on some of the pieces after an iron soak? Can that stuff be removed with more Iron Out?

    • @TheCrystalCollector
      @TheCrystalCollector  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s usually manganese oxides, and I’ve recently figured out that it initially will come off then depositing on the bottom layer of your soaking tub, contacting and staining the pieces on bottom. You will need to elevate them off the bottom and re soak

    • @TheCrystalCollector
      @TheCrystalCollector  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The iron out should clean up natural quartzite better than anything, that in a pressure washer combo. I would say just searching on the Internet, they are lots of books and things on identification. I would not recommend the apps they do not work well

Only to have my evil step mother to steal my entire collection. Love your "what??" my son says that a lot too. Do you sell on any of the sites, like ebay? Love to check it out.

      If it’s intergrown into the Crystal you can’t remove it, but if it’s over gross you can pressure wash it or pull it off with tools
