This video made it look so easy to do. Unfortunately for me, it was not. Wish the profiles were pre cut. This is where I struggled most so far. I have not attempted to mount the net. I purchased a mitre saw and clamping box in anticipation for this project. Sadly, my cuts were not straight. A few degrees off for each cut. On top of that, the profiles are still too long. Just wish all the parts were at the correct length to begin with. Borrowed a neighbor’s electric miter saw. The cuts were even and easy to cut. Final result was a good fitting cover.
Idk I'm confused and about to see if ace hardware will do it for me. Even tho I bought the correct size for my xl 200 nothing is the right length with the corners attached and my hacksaw isn't doing the job.. I'd be having to do like 5 or 6 cuts..
Putting the netting is a major pain. I purchased two zig zag kits and built the frame. Net keeps ripping when trying to install, and has a lot of ugly bubbles/wrinkles where there are 90 degree bends.
Just finished mine. Now I know why they don't show the cutting of the metal in this video. Good luck with that without the right method. Got it done buy was a huge pita. Also, some of the dimensions given in the guide for my reefer 170 were incorrect.
Thank you for your feedback. We would love to hear where the dimensions are off and correct it right away. Please send us an email here: www.redseafish.com/support/tech-support-inquiry-2021/
Hello Red Sea, Were any zig zag kits used on this cover? It has cut outs for the lights but they don't look like the Zig Zag kit that were mentioned earlier in the video. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am wanting to order this soon. Thanks!
Wonderful video! It was simple and to the point! I'm going to be receiving my cover today for my Red Sea reefer 450. Luckily I chose to hang my lights from the ceiling(Kessil AP700 and Aquaticlife T5 fixture) so all I need to do is assemble a easy rectangle!
I've made DIY net covers for my tanks before with the window framing from Home Depot, are your rails the same size, could I use what I have on hand along with a couple of the kits from you to go around my lighting/overflow to complete a lid for my 350?
@@Redseafish one thing that really got me is the back corner. The return pipe is really thick and breaking the corner off isn’t working. It’s been almost a yr and a half since I messed with it. I recently bought some new lights and figured I would try it again
Looks a good "solution" but for tanks like REEFER 625, if there are two or three lights does this affect how many zig-zag kits are needed? Some RS illustrations for this tank show a cutout for the weir and one centre brace. Alternatively the manual shows for 625 two off-centre braces and no weir cutout and this is how the cutting list shows it. Perhaps it predates the REEFER 160s, where there is now an option of 2x or 3x REEFER lights? With 3x REEFER 90 lights, using 3x zig-zag kits and no cut-out for the weir, with two braces, matches the cutting list in the manual. Should the net go over or around the weir? I've assumed that the net is inside the tank but over the water and not outside it and over the glass (where the clearance for the weir would be greatest). With 3x lights and 2x braces, each light would have a "window" and not be over a brace. With 2x REEFER 160 lights, 2x zig-zag kits with one brace seems a better option. Should the net go over or around the weir? Perhaps the manual predates the option of using 160's and only two lights. The spacing and hence the cutting list would need to be modified? With 2x lights and 1x braces, each light would have a "window" and not be over a brace. So, I'm confused because some RS pictures for 150 cm kit show a cut out for the weir and some show one rather than two braces. I can appreciate that two braces would be stronger, but not ideal if a light is going to be covered. Covering or exposing the weir cover seems an option that is not fully explained. Obviously cutting and then changing your mind isn't an option. My requirement is to cover a 625 and use 3x REEFER 90 lights with the net in the tank but supported on the glass edges. Is it preferable to follow the cutting list and use 2x braces and not go around the weir with 3x zig-zag kits. Some RS 625 cover illustrations show 2x zig-zag kits and a weir cutout with a centre brace, so don't need a third zig-zag kit. So the number of braces seems to be related to the number of lights used. Covering or exposing the weir can also be an option. So, perhaps too many choices. At least the cutting list confirms one "solution" and it's easy enough to recalculate for another solution. When adding the netting with the roller, would it be preferable to start in the middle of a section and work out one side and the do the other side before repeating at the other end?
You can got over the overflow or around it. Over it means you need another zig zag in the center. Around it means you don't the cut out is for the whole overflow.
Good quality, but a pain to put it together. Dimensions for my nano were inaccurate, so had to cut the profiles again. Fixing the net looks easier on video than reality. Takes some practice, but in the end I have a nice top cover net which matches my Red Sea Nano perfectly
Terrible product for the price you charge. It is impossible to keep the net stretched and flat. And also the net gets torn when you try to use the roller on the spline. The finished product is bad looking and cheapens the nice aquarium. Such a shame. 100% not recommended.
so design an acrylic cover for those who want to continue supporting your brand. I've already sourced it locally since you dont have it available :(. love your stuff, but ya, get on this@@Redseafish
I bought a generic mesh cover before for an old tank and it was much better than this one. Red Sea want to be a premium brand, so sell covers that are already cut to size to give perfect fits.
Thank you for commenting. With so many tanks, equipment options and extras people add to their tank it's impossible to get a perfect fit. It's enough that someone wants to position their LED mounting arms a bit off center and you need another screen. So rather than locking people into what we think is right we offer a DIY kit with endless options to fit the goal of each customer.
And there you have it. Not actually showing any of the frame being cut, net being trimmed to size or the spline and net being trimmed down once in the frame....you know the actual hard parts of this.
And the most time consuming for a video that is already one of the longest there is. It's a DIY project, and as such it requires proficient DIY skills, like cutting, trimming, filing etc.
@@Redseafish i was able to get it done. It's a great product, but the video isn't. I think most people can figure out how to put a square together. What would have been nice to see was the trimming. It would have only added 30 seconds to your longest video. You also never showed what the under side of the lid looks like when completed. Like I said great product, but your directions are awful and the video is slightly misleading and incomplete.
This was an absolute NIGHTMARE to install on my 525xl. You will not be able to evenly get the tension out of the net. Completely warped and I broke my lower back trying to install the spleen. The roller will cut into the net and break it as you roll, often times before you can even lay down the spleen.
So you’re charging almost $2000 for the tank, why not just include a pre assembled lid by adding the costs to the retail price. That way it makes more sense. Companies just want to milk our money
This is a generic kit, for not only Red Sea tanks. On top of it people with the same Red Sea tanks have different equipment and mounting etc. therefore a uniform solution isn't going to work. That's actually one of the cheapest options on the market.
just saw it in my LFS, i almost impulse bought it, but decided to do some research, and here i am! it would be nice if there was a way to add a small removable section so i can easily open it to for feeding, rather than lifting the whole piece. seems kind of flimsy to me, especially for my 525. great that you guys finally have a mesh net, but you could work on accessories that let us customize ours more!
even if u give it to the machine shop using conventional machine to cut, is impossible to perfect the cover. Because the cut area will reveal the raw silver AL material. Is ugly. And there's dimensional mistake as well. Terrible design
Extreem bad quality my net cover where the plastic not 90 degree and the store has contact red sea. And they say well bad luck whe can.t do nothing. Why are you having such a bad surves. Is it becaus you have so many custemors that you company got allure of it self?
Not very easy imo, with a hack saw my wrist and hand cramped up and the quality of materials is fine but don't think it will last very long. I had to cut almost every piece more than once to get it to sit right. Putting the netting on it was easy enough but just surprised it's like 1/3 the cost of a custom made lid and I had to put in some work on it and it's just an alright product. Going to use it until I have the extra cash for a custom lid but I'd say this as is is prolly a good $20 overpriced.
The worst net i have ever experienced, low quality and a very high price, the hand book dosent give any directions on how to do Very disappointing!!!!!

Lol. Getting that net into place is a lesson in insanity. It never comes out that good. Expensive, frustrating product that doesn’t come with enough parts.

It depends on the location of the frame support, type of light, distance from the light source, etc. It can cast a shadow in some cases.
