NIN for me were one of those bands all camps respected - they were heavy enough for extreme metal guys - but also got respect in the pop rap & EDM camps - Reznor is just an incredibe composer
This is a tier list I’ve been waiting to get updated. As a guy who had been getting into NIN in the last couple of months, I forgot that The Downward Spiral was entering its 30th anniversary. I love that album, but The Fragile is right up there in terms of diversity and composition.
You are spot on about how listening to any one song of The Fragile instantly makes you want to put the entire album on. That happens to me all the time. I think "Just Like You Imagined" is the greatest song ever written. And big respect to you putting The Fragile over The Downward Spiral! I'm right there with you. Both MASTERPIECES. But The Fragile is just on another level man. Shocked you didn't like All The Love In The World. That song was instantly mindblowing to me, but I agree that the album is just "good", which a few stand out tracks. I like Year Zero more than you, but I do think it relies too much on drum samples as song intros. Disagree on not mentioning Less Than. That song is a banger and live it's incredible. Find a festival performance if you can. Silent Hill soundtrack fan too! Subscribed. Pretty good tier list, almost entirely agree.
IMO, The Downward Spiral is just one of the most forward thinking records ever. That album really helped me mentally in my personal life. Piggy especially was a song that meant a lot to me after I graduated high school due to me struggling socially in freshman college.
@Playerthegamer21 Question is... we will get more glimpses at a modern dark Trent Reznor that we got for a single at least in a collaboration with fellow Industrial act HEALTH?? (Isn´t everyone?) or it´ll be the same soft experimental NIN that we have since Hesitation Marks and today?
The Fragile is the greatest double album ever made! Personally think it’s his best work. The Downward Spiral is spectacular but The Fragile is on a whole other level!
I remember buying With Teeth when it was released without ever hearing anything from the band before and I loved it. Its my favourite album of theirs because of that nostalgia. Funny how that works sometimes.
I'm so stoked you made an updated list, you're easily my favorite music related creator. I've just been getting into NIN over the course of the past few months and I've been trying for almost a year. Your original list wanted me to go back and listen to them, and now they're in my top 10-15 favorite bands.
7:50 you can't expect Trent to be aggressive forever it was his growing up album and an end of self destruction trilogy. This album is a very good ending to the trilogy, for me it was perfect
Most diverse??? Go relisten to The Fragile and see if you still stand by that... You can like what you like, but I find that statement to be INSANE personally.
The Downward Spiral is still my fav all album of all time, I bought it in 95 after my Mum's cancer was diagnosed as terminal and Trent sounded more messed up than I felt so it helped a lot! Having said all that, I too am not sure where NIN is at now as well and feel it would be best for him to move on from the name. That is just my opinion of course.
I had a similar experience with discovering a band through a video game without knowing who it was until years later. It was the game Rainbow Six-Lockdown and the end credits had an instrumental version of the song Contagion by Fear Factory. I was a young teen and only listening to radio rock at the time and years later i got into Fear Factory and rediscovered that song and it's still one of my favorites from them despite it being from their weakest album.
Really love your taste and bands you choose to focus on. Great tier list thank you / most enjoyable. The accompanying videos to NIN’s music has always been really cool and at times really disturbing- the videos to the broken ep are particularly so. Great but pretty graphic and shocked me when I managed to find them uncut.I greatly admire the level of detail you go into not to mention all the comparisons you’re able to make - brilliant content thanks from 🇬🇧 !
Been a fan for well over 15 years and I'm constantly amazed on revisits how well Reznor's material ages. Every spin of The Fragile feels fresh and having recently re-listened to With Teeth I was floored by how much better it is than I remembered! Reznor is a true musical auteur, like the David Lynch of Industrial Rock.
Goddamn Trenches it’s like you read my mind and knew I was going to go through the NIN discography again soon, on what I call “Industrial March” Broken EP is one of my favorite Eps of all time easily.
Wrong again, as always. Just messing with you, you pretty much nailed this one for my taste. I’d probably move “Broken” to Perfection and “The Slip” and “With Teeth” (it’s the first album by NIN I heard, and part of me is a mainstream rock hack) to Fantastic.
I have to oddly shout out the video game rockband for introducing me to NIN LOL. I don't know where my music taste would be at this point in my life if I wasn't for NIN. I listened to them all through high school. Now I'm 31 and their music still sounds so fresh. See I'm in the same boat, I like the more grittier loud metal sound on TDS. What I will give albums like With Teeth though is they're Trent spreading his wealth. I don't think my dad would ever listen to them if it wasn't for With Teeth being more sonically friendly to new listeners who may be put off by some of the tinnitus educing tracks like March Of The Pigs lol.
The recent use of a brass is interesting to me because Trent played saxophone in high school and it was included a saxophone on the song “Purest Feeling”, which was part of a collection of songs that mostly became Pretty Hate Machine.
Rewatching this and it makes me think of my bestfriend who just passed away from a heart attack. The 2 of us collected everything Nine Inch Nails, the last album we bought was The Slip, between the 2 of us we had every single Halo. I miss my bestfriend.
With Teeth is a love it or hate it album. I think the tour they did for that album was their best live era. Got into them with the Live: Beside You in Time DVD and that's still one of the main things that makes me want to make music. Aaron North was a fantastic live guitarist. But that With Teeth album has as many duds as it has bangers.
I can't stand the disrespect to Add Violence and Hesitation Marks. Add Violence was literally the ep that got me into Nine Inch Nails. And Hesitation Marks is just an absolute favorite of mine. I also absolutely love With Teeth as well. I just find all the songs on their very fun to jam to.
I LOVED With Teeth. Grohl's drumming was great on the songs he was on. I thought it was a back to basics album for NIN. I think he got off drugs and booze before he made this album.
Pretty hate machine is Depeche Mode on roids. My first NIN album was The Fragile in 1999 on a cassette when I was 13. A friend lent me The Downward Spiral & Broken in 2000. It's crazy it's been 23 years now. I mean when The Downward Spiral was released 30 years back was 1964, we are talking about The Beatles era.
I personally agree with most of this, but what I would do is move the slip up one & move with teeth to the top. For me personally With Teeth is my fav album and The Slip I like the music style of it.
I really like Hesitation Marks, in all honesty. It's fairly light, less suffocating, which is something that is very present in The Fragile, The Downward Spiral and lots of their other work. Various Methods of Escape especially speaks to me and Everything was something that grew on me over time. Might be because these ambient, more clean, slightly empty, electronic pieces remind me of deadmau5es more experimental stuff on While, and I basically grew up listening to deadmau5. I agree with the With Teeth ranking, however. There wasn't much to keep me listening to the record.
Thank you for the video the downward spiral is one of the best albums of all time. I've been a nine inch nails fan since I was in high school I remember when they released year zero which I still really love. Was at lights in the sky tour, ninja tour and whatever tour 2014 was. The slip is also a great album possibly the last good full length album of theirs. Hesitation marks I do like but not as much.
Unpopular opinion: Trent's film score phase has been my favorite thing he's done. I LOVE Downward Spiral, it's in my favorite albums. But his soundtrack work has changed Hollywood and his score for Gone Girl is one of the best made to me.
1. The fragile 2. With teeth 3. Downward spiral 4. Pretty hate machine 5. Hesitation marks 6. Bad witch 7. Year zero 8. The slip 9. Not the actual events 10. Add violence 11. Ghosts V + VI 12. Ghosts I-IV
Broken is definitely my favorite NIN release and honestly one of my favorite albums ever. I love Downward but I could care less about A Warm Place and Eraser. It must be a great album if I like 12 out of the 14 tracks.
I still remember so many people hating on The Fragile when it was released. People were saying Trent had gone soft. Now people are calling it his Magnum Opus. Funny how opinions change with time. I personally loved it the first time I heard it, on release day. I think you and I probably had a very similar journey in our music tastes changing as a lot of your comments during your tier list videos really hit home and resonate with me. Disappointment is such a fitting word for when I first listened to With Teeth after also popping it in on the way home from Best Buy (bought it there as well). NIN really dropped off hard for me after The Fragile. I do love that live album And All That Could Have Been and the Still Ep. I rarely listen to With Teeth, Year Zero, and The Slip (Demon Seed is the only song on that one I feel deserves recognition). Hesitation Marks was the last NIN album I bought. None of those Eps really do much for me. For me overall, it feels like Trent was replaced with an emotionless robot after the Still Ep. From With Teeth through Hesitation Marks it sounds to me more like he's just talking the lyrics, not really singing. I know kind of screams a little on those last 3 eps but the music to me was just forgettable noiserock so I never got into them.
Also props for mentioning some of those amazing soundtrack only singles. The Perfect Drug is pretty recognized (as it should be), but Burn, Deep, and Dead Souls don't get nearly enough love.
I feel so old its been 30 years since Downard Spiral as I rocked out to PHM when I was 14 !!! I cant top SMH . Where does the time go ? All you youngbloods will feel my pain sooner than you know . Time moves faster with each year I promise .
One of the best bands of all time imo. The downward spiral remains scarier, more complex, futuristic, and abrasive than anything by the likes of death grips, prurient, or merzbow. My ranking would be: S tier: Downward Spiral, Year Zero, Bad Witch, Pretty Hate Machine A tier: Ghosts I-IV, the Fragile, Broken B tier: With Teeth, Hesitation Marks, Not the Actual Events, Add Violence C tier: The Slip, Ghosts V-VI
Happy 30th Anniversary to this iconic album in industrial rock. Nine Inch Nails early stuff is legendary in that genre appealing to metalheads, alternative rock fans, new wave fans, and more. Trent Reznor is a musical genius in that regards. Here would be my ranking of their albums: S - Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile A - Broken, Year Zero B - With Teeth, Ghosts I-IV, Not the Actual Events, Add Violence C - Hesitation Marks, Ghosts V: Together, Ghosts VI: Locusts D - The Slip, Bad Witch
@@superunknown2812 Broken is really good and if it was a full length and not an EP, it would go in S-tier. The one problem with great EPs is that they always have you wanting more.

I very heavily agree with most of this list, but the 1 thing that our opinions differ on is With Teeth. I personally believe that it’s better than PHM and Broken, but not enough to be in perfection so I would personally put it at the top of fantastic
Perfect - The Downward Spiral, Fragile Great - Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, With Teeth Good - Year Zero, The Slip, Hesitation Marks Alright - Ghosts, Not The Actual Events, Add Violence, Bad Witch Bad - There are no bad Nine Inch Nails albums
All the George Bush era protest music is so dated and cringe, considering it went away as soon as obama got elected- and continues doing the same things. This marks when the left became the machine.
I feel like I may be the only one who likes Hesitation Marks sometimes lmao. Definitely not my favorite or top three which would probably be (TDS, The Fragile, Still)
I've been listening to NIN since 1989-1990 and only listen up to The Fragile - The Perfect Drug. Pretty much sums up what I feel about what followed. Shame.
Nearly agree but would put PHM to great and With Teeth there instead. Ghosts only good somehow. Still a huge NIN Fan but as an oldschool one, since the slip all the latest albums don't deliver the goosebumps all those albums had before.
Downward Spiral its my fav followed by With Teeth After with teeth i've lost my interest in NIN, Trent decided to go more electronic than guitars and the stretching of Ghost releases put me to sleep since i have zero interest in instrumental albums, unless its Prodigy or Chemical Brothers
Always felt that downward spiral was a tab overrated as petty hate machine and The Fragile are far better than it also i have a soft spot for hesitation mark's
The Fragile is a fucking masterpiece. It absolutely takes me to a warm place. No pun intended
NIN for me were one of those bands all camps respected - they were heavy enough for extreme metal guys - but also got respect in the pop rap & EDM camps - Reznor is just an incredibe composer

"Pretty Hate Machine" will forever be a top tier album! Full of bangers!! 🤘💀🔥🔥

The Fragile was the first "mind-blowing" album of my childhood. Man, I loved that LP.
7:50 you can't expect Trent to be aggressive forever it was his growing up album and an end of self destruction trilogy. This album is a very good ending to the trilogy, for me it was perfect

I love the entire discography. Just slap them all on the top row of perfection.
Pretty well agree with this. I probably would've ranked Broken as perfect too, but everything else is pretty spot on.

You still gotta rank Manson once. He's about to tour.
30… wow. It was only 10 years old when I got into NIN.
Love The Downward Spiral. NIN's performance at Woodstock 94 is legendary.

@@williamroberts1224 Return to form how? It doesn’t sound anything like the early albums imo
I'd put With Teeth in perfection personally. It's what got me into NIN.

With teeth is a masterpiece 😜
One of the best bands of all time imo. The downward spiral remains scarier, more complex, futuristic, and abrasive than anything by the likes of death grips, prurient, or merzbow. My ranking would be:
S tier: Downward Spiral, Year Zero, Bad Witch, Pretty Hate Machine
A tier: Ghosts I-IV, the Fragile, Broken
B tier: With Teeth, Hesitation Marks, Not the Actual Events, Add Violence
C tier: The Slip, Ghosts V-VI
Pretty Hate Machine is the only one I go back to after all these years.
I do agree, though, about Add Violence. Kinda just feels like B sides from Hesitation Marks. Track 1 is great tho

Downward Spiral its my fav followed by With Teeth
After with teeth i've lost my interest in NIN, Trent decided to go more electronic than guitars and the stretching of Ghost releases put me to sleep since i have zero interest in instrumental albums, unless its Prodigy or Chemical Brothers
Wait... you like SILENT HILL?
LOVE 1-4
Wow me too!!!
Like of you think NIN should have stopped at The Fragile.
Always felt that downward spiral was a tab overrated as petty hate machine and The Fragile are far better than it also i have a soft spot for hesitation mark's
What's so good about pretty hate machine? I really don't get it. Not bad though
