- In this Review of Cytology, Part 1, Professor Fink reviews The Cell Theory, the limits of cell growth (surface area to volume ratio), prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells, and the structure of the Cell Membrane. Reference is made to the phospholipid bilayer and the role of proteins in the cell membrane, including as Ion Channels, Transporter (Carrier) Proteins, Enzymes, Receptor Sites and glycoprotein Recognition Sites.

Great lectures! With limited time to study, a full time job, and a professor with a monotone voice I think these lectures have saved my grade. I try to watch one each night as I'm reviewing my notes and then listen to it again on my way to work. Finally feel like I am getting a good handle on all the terminology.
you probably dont care but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown :)

Dear Professor Fink great gratitude from India I am watching your lectures and they are amazingly helpful. Now I have one question: on 50:18 you talk about the example of a kidney transplant and finding a perfect match which is impossible due to the unique glycoprotein attached in the phospholipid bi-layer... But if the kidney transplant would be done to identical twins, would a perfect match be possible?

but if radius is 2 the volume would actually be smaller if you dont ignore 4/3 value. was kindda hoping he would actually explain why it's negligible
The ratio between 4 and 4/3 is 3 and it is constant and it is the same for small cells as for large cells. It does not affect how large a cell can be. While the difference between r^2 and r^3 is heavily dependant on the size of r. So the radius of a cell is the limiting factor of how large the cell can be. Larger cells would not have enough surface area to absorb needed substances and eliminate waste products, either of them causing them to die.

Prof Fink, I'm confused on one point, cellular size. Doesn't your explanation explain proportion, rather than size? What if the radius was one inch...your explanation would hold, but that's a pretty big cell !

+Earl Ledden well, supposing Mr. Ledden is asking this question because of r^2 , r^3 thing:
Let's go back and see the relationship between growing up and size.
r=0,1 r=0,2 r=0,5 r=1
r^2=0,01 0,04 0,25 1
r^3=0,001 0,008 0,125 1
r^2/r^3(higher is better for cell)=respectively 10 , 5 , 2 , 1 So the number is getting worser for cell to be alive.
Another point though there are many cells which are bigger than(in terms of size) 1-2 inch, such as ostrich eggs about 5 inch. On the other hand some nerve cells are like metres long, though they are not spherical.

The difference between 4 and 4/3 is small. The BIG difference is between radius squared and radius cubed.

Dumb question, who is patient zero regarding the pathways that have been exploited by big pharma. Serious question but kidding about big pharma. Is the first patient that is was successfully treated on the cause of the medicines glory or its downfall during clinical trials. I hear about surgical firsts which include Docs, patients and basically thats it but successfully inoculating billy joe or lee roy Jenkins does not come up. Just the Dr and Medicine. I really didn't learn ANYTHING. You keep saying "you should have learned in a biology class" but literally EVERYTHING you mention in this video is taught in any high school biology class, NOT college cytology!
