    I was "caught" speeding in Italy fourteen years ago on my R1, on the autostrada north of Naples I flew past an Alfa Romeo just realising it was a cop car as I passed it, I of course slowed way down only for the Alfa to pull level and the cop in the passenger seat gave me the international sign to wind it on, I duly obliged. on that trip I found the Italian cops love bikes and only ever stopped me to have a look at the bike and some even showed me pictures of their own bikes, a real bike and biker loving country!

    Reading a few of the comments below. The problem is they weren't riding like idiots, they are two experienced motorcyclists and as he said it's just a quick squirt of throttle to go "x2". Didn't see anything over the top in their riding. I am a retired traffic cop from Ireland and would have been very reluctant to enforce that rate of punishment, fortunately we were allowed to think for ourselves and use our discretion, sometimes a word of advice pointing out what could happen is appropriate, log them on the system has having received a warning and then play it by ear if they're caught again.

    • @RON580415
      @RON580415 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Here in Switzerland I'm afraid if you get stopped by the police you are either a) going to get fined or b) going to prison. End of. The police are given no training in discretion. It is also illegal to have dash cams and the like as it is an infringement of the privacy laws. So they were very lucky they didn't have all their camera gear confiscated. This also applies to speed camera detectors and speed camera apps on your navi system. As mentioned elsewhere in the replies most bikers here "scout the course" and keep an eye open for the oncoming bikes who will always let you know if something is coming up: Having said all of that Switzerland is still a great place to do bike tours, but if you want speed you have to go to Germany.

    This video made me very sad because it just goes to prove what I have suspected for some years - I can no longer really visit the Alps on my own 999. I've done all the passes, several of them many times. I once did 12 of them in one day on an 851. But although I live in Switzerland, I just haven't dared to head out there for some time because I live in fear of something like this happening. You cannot ride an 999 legally in Switzerland. It can't be done. If you tried you'd have much more fun taking the train. Ever since they changed the law in 2012 or 2013 it has been the death knell for sports biking in this country, a place that was once the world mecca for biking. Very, very sad.

    In Canada (at least in Ontario) for that speeding fine you're looking at $2,000 to $10,000, demerit points, bike confiscated, license suspension and jail time. Depends on where it happens, always worse in urban or construction areas. Police have a lot of room to decide the size and extent of the punishment. The biggest speeding fine on road around these parts was in Alberta, $12,000 to a biker going 264km/h. So even though it sucks you were fined, be glad it was just that, it could've been much worse as you said.

    Thank you for another awesome episode, despite the mishaps. I somewhat feel your frustration as Switzerland is a beautiful yet dangerous animal to handle. I grew up in Italy but lived in Leicestershire for many years and now in Switzerland, there is a certain period needed to adjust to the fact that speed limits are really enforced and its a big risk; with that being said there is a massive biking community in Switzerland and most of them are ready to take that risk, its a part of the life here and I somewhat respect them for it (as you may have noticed people still driving the shit out of those bikes in CH). Being an avid track day goer I would say it is not an issue, in fact probably nicer than being in the UK; in Switerland you are at the center of some of best European tracks and they are all accessible, but I would visit the UK if I wanted to ride on a damp bumpy track. Also you guys rode from UK to do Mugello, that is a trek!! Have fun and looking forward to the next one!!!

    • @disekjoumoer
      @disekjoumoer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thing is, you can't do track days in Switzerland because there none. Everyone knows bikers go above the limit, but the lengths one has to go to avoid being caught is ridiculous. It usually means slow one way, then fast back along the same route. Fortunately, if the route is popular with bikers, others will warn you.

    • @Renzsu

      That I don't know, but how it works is that they determine an amount between 1 and 3000 Swiss Francs (income determines this) and that amount is multiplied by a factor that is calculated by your infraction. Probably Swiss authorities will have contact with your local authorities and possibly tax office.. I wouldn't know about that.

    I live in switzerland and really know how nice grimsel, furk and Sustenpass are and really tempting. But you allways have to check your speed in those areas, Police are all over the place there and very strickt.... good luck on your trip
    Love the Video thumbs UP

      how is the police stance on aftermarket exhaust pipes , can you ride with terminal and okra's or are they as repressive towards those as well?

    • @oseit3857
      @oseit3857 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aftermakert exhaust are usually not a problem, if you have a E-Nr. on the exhaust (street leagle) and exhaust papers for the bike. But if they want the can still messure the db and if its too loud you could get a ticket. Akra, Termi, Yoshi etc. are mostly fine (street legal version) not race exhaust..

    • @oseit3857
      @oseit3857 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if its street legal with papers (CH) they will and cant do anything. But if you ride around with race fits, baffle out etc they will messup your day fo sure.

    If you want to ride a bike in Switzerland you have to know where you can ride like a maniac and where not. The main passes have speed controls often. Hit them during odd hours like early in the morning or atleast not during the summer holidays.

      They were travelling to Italy so you suggest they stay at the border then sneak through in the early hours? 😂

    I'm from Italy and we know how bad it is to go to Switzerland, that's why we avoid it and it's not just the cops, even other swiss bikers I've met are among the most unfunny people ever, telling us to slow down even when we were doing 60km\h, they're crazy. Joke's on them tho, less people are gonna go there and spend their money.

    I thought Victoria was the world centre for sanctimonious fun police but I was wrong. Have just crossed Suisse off my list of places to ride through.

    This is why I avoided Switzerland (on principle) last time I was in Europe...too many horror stories of people being ripped off with ridiculous speeding / crossing white line fines. stunningly beautiful country run by officious twats. Such a shame it pissed on your day. Still, at least the police were polite about it..!!

      Yup, it's bullshit nanny state ballbaggery. They like to stay neutral except when fucking over drivers, that's where they shine. Go to Italy and Germany, their scenery and rides are fantastic.

      They are the nicest Police force. They sometimes trick you into thinking its good to get a fine because you are paying them for being so damn polite and nice!

      Switzerland is definitely off the list, guess that leaves Germany, France and Spain if I want to take a bike trip to Europe, certainly not going to visit Italy until their neo-Fascist shitshow of a government is voted out.

    Wanted to say that I'm visiting the Black Forest area from the States and (based on this truly epic adventure you're sharing with us) I'm planning to ride the B500 on a stolen (rented) GS this weekend - but we'll be stopping at the Swiss border instead of risking a fine for 2 over. Who the hell pays so much attention to their speed that they notice they're going TWO OVER.
