    By far the funniest thing about Lysandre's Trump Card is that almost immediately after it was banned, Enrique Avila placed second at US Nationals with a 0-energy stall/mill deck that sat on Wailord-EX for 20 turns and waited for their opponent to deck out

      @@fluffyspark798 dunno if there's footage but there are a lot of breakdowns of it. It was a rather amusing concept in that the deck basically just focuses on keeping your wailord alive and nothing else. I think it included stuff like the hammer cards to remove energy; helmets to reduce damage by 20, full/max restores and the supporter equivalents, etc. It was VERY annoying to play against because pretty much ONLY a deck that had wailord's type weakness or could block all forms of support could beat it. As an example, even the night march decks need 2 turns minimum to take out wailord...woops, item card returned it to the hand, back on the bench you go!

      MtG also makes some cool vids and articles about it. It is surprising that Konami was able to get away with this, though it is understandable that a good part of it is to keep ot fresh (aka out with the old and in with the new). Farfa slightly tackled this in his vod about the Ban List history. There is a complex topic to be further discussed.

      @AsterDXZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I don't play the game so maybe I don't know, but I like how at least in this video they see a problem coming a mile away and try to make bans that don't completely screw over the new powerful card, but aren't afraid to pull the trigger when it's gonna get out of hand.

    • @iBenjamin1000
      @iBenjamin1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Looking at the reply, I think that's the main problem that many ygo players have with how konami handles bans. crystron halquifibrax is an incredibly powerful card, but it benefits from being able to play so many strong tuner monsters to summon it. konami kept bonking the tuners while allowing halq to stay around because it was a new, powerful card they wanted to let people play.

    • @engiopdf8745
      @engiopdf8745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha that's funny because Pokemon doesn't ban cards. You're really underestimating how long these cards were legal for until they got banned, only in Expanded. Don't worry bro, it will rotate out :)

    • @nathanielbass771
      @nathanielbass771 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      actually, Pokemon tends to have a history of banning the wrong cards. For example, Wally was banned due to cards that allow item or ability locks turn 1 ...but those cards weren't banned, allowing them to be instantly played on a player's second turn with other means. Removing wally crippled a ton of decks including one of my favorites at the time that was just a for-fun deck that used dragonite that gained an extra prize card upon KO ; meanwhile, the problem cards remained and could just as easily screw you over turn 3, turning the game into a coin flip of whoever got their combo onto the field first based upon turn order...

  • @flagrama
    @flagrama 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I feel like the video missed an important part of decks with Maxie or Archie. Exeggcute with the ability Propogation for hand-fixing. The ability allows you to return Exeggcute from your discard pile to your hand, and due to how private/public information works in Pokemon, you can use this ability multiple times on the same turn with the same card. This was an important hand-fixing card to get down to exactly Maxie/Archie in hand because some hands can be almost impossible to play down to a single card, but with Propogation you can do things like have a Maxie and an Ultra Ball in hand, Propogation two Exeggcute from discard and use them as the cost for the Ultra Ball to remain with just the 1 card in hand, whereas without that ability you'd be stuck with no way to get rid of the Ultra Ball and couldn't use the Supporter that turn.

    6:05 to anyone who got here from the sister-channels and is wondering, if a player is ever unable to place a pokemon in the active slot, they lose the game on the spot. Since placing a pokemon on the bench (to be able to take the active slot if needed) is an "on your turn" action, it doesn't matter if they're currently holding any reserves (which they probably wouldn't be since a full bench is useful and Shiftree sends victims to the deck), if the last active pokemon leaves play they're hosed. This usually only happens if you brick hardcore and most tournament decks are tuned to the point where it's impossible without significant disruption (which is half the reason disruption effects are so rare and tend to be ban-magnets), but Shiftree exploited this rule and the game's general lack of out-of-turn interaction (put simply, Pokemon does not have counterspells or hand-traps).

    I distinctly remember the Lysandre's Trump Card ban being a bit controversial at the time, after all it had been nearly 13 years (the previous ban was Neo Genesis Slowking in 2002, Sneasel was banned over a year earlier btw) since a card was banned from standard, but looking back LTC might genuinely be the worst designed card ever made.

It's a lot funnier to me as I played in the tail end of the 4th era with Broken Time Space, but of course with that card never reaching Expanded, its never been in a format where it's been broken. Just funny how FoGP feels more broken to me despite being a weaker BTS. Guess its because BTS was only ever legal in a controlled format.

    As of upload the next set has a Lugia V Star that can cheat out the new colorless Acheops the same way Maxie could, which then can accelerate Special Energy. In Expanded you even have Wally again, who works on Pokemon V because Wally explicitly excludes EX Pokemon, so this can pop off Turn 1 going second.

    • @flagrama
      @flagrama 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You still can't play Wally turn 1 because you can't play supporters turn 1 so you can only use the VSTAR power turn 2. And the new Archeops doesn't disable basic gameplay for the opponent.

    • @piratebear3126
      @piratebear3126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flagrama Turn 1 going second can play Wally to evolve Lugia into the VStar, drop Archeops with the VStar Ability, Archeops drops 2 special energy on Lugia, you drop the third as your attachment and swing for 220 plus destroying stadiums on Turn 1 going second.
      Banning Supporters Turn 1 going first made going second completely over powered, and honestly neither player should be able to attack on their first turn to even things out.
      EDIT: should also mention that 220 will KO any Pokemon V, netting 2 prizes since going first means you haven’t gone VMax/VStar yet.

    • @flagrama
      @flagrama 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@piratebear3126 being able to set up going second is fair in my opinion. I don't play Expanded at all, so maybe it really is massively different and could be a problem though. Doesn't seem like TPCi think it's going to be a problem at least since there aren't any Expanded bans for Silver Tempest.

    • @piratebear3126
      @piratebear3126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flagrama I don’t think it’ll see much in tournaments due to consistency issues. You’re burning your once per game VStar ability turn 1 and you have to dump Archeops into the discard (granted that’s not too hard with Ultra/Quick Ball and Battle Compressor). It’ll make a great aggro ladder deck online though, since it wins or loses quickly, and it’s a wild combo to have a wincon turn 1.
      Pokemon desperately needs another format or two considering how high Expanded’s power level is getting, but TPCi seems to not care about anything but Standard recently.

      While the Expanded format itself may not be as active right now, looking back at why its cards were banned is an excellent gateway into the history of the game at a time when playing retro formats is becoming increasingly popular. Pokémon also likes to print cards with similar effects to ones that have come before, so learning how effects were utilized in the past can inform deck-building in the present!
