So I've read that if the metamorphosis process is prevented due to some incident preventing the caterpillar from producing a chrysalis the caterpillar dies or may begin going through some sort of incomplete metamorphosis that will cause it to die as well. They are driven to begin going into pupa mode at a certain time and can no longer live as caterpillars after that time passes. It's a really strange process. The caterpillar is essentially reborn as its body liquefies and reforms. The chrysalis is essentially like a second egg or womb. The process in which cells start becoming different body parts starts all over again with a complete reset. It's really fascinating.

Just like to make a suggestion but it may be a good idea to keep it outside since I'm sure temp. has a "say" in when it decides to hatch so it's in the best environment possible :) (instead of it hatching inside in warmer temps which are different to the outside temps.)

Do they need cold or humid conditions to overwinter in diapause (as pupa) or anything? I have one too but I’m not sure how to get it through winter to the spring.

Yeah I was thinking of putting him down the shed soon as it gets cold, but doesn't frost which is good.
