That’s not true she never won the Oscar for that role. She won two Oscar’s very early in her career and that was it

But Joan Crawford decided to started a campaign to prevent Bette Davis to win the Best Actress for her role in Whatever Happened To Baby Jane.
And Just For The Record, Betty Davis was ROBBED in 1950, NOT Gloria Swanson!!!!!

I love how the bully turns out to be in fact Blanche. Note the impatient call as soon as Jane has a friend visiiting; and when Blanche admits "Not anymore Jane. Not anymore". In spite of the appearance, Jane turns out to be the real victim of a toxic relationship by Blanche!

Blanche is a bully who lost her power and she's desperately trying to worm her way out of being the under dog.

Jane was abusive to Blanche (both mentally and physically). She literally holds her captive, ties her up, deprives her of food and water (to the point of death), beats her up, murders her friend in front of her... I could go on.
What Blanche did to her sister was pretty horrible, but what we see Jane do is arguably worse, without a doubt.

I know this performance is supposed to be uncomfortable, but there's something so sad about it all. This elderly woman is singing about how much she misses her dead father, and her missing potential as a star.

    • @christianealshut1123
      @christianealshut1123 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yes, and what's also creepy is how many of the songs you see lying on the piano in sheet music form are actually about her Daddy and probably he all wrote them (there is at least one titled "I wouldn't trade my Daddy"). Gets you to have second thoughts about the relationship she might have had with her father and whether this may be one other reason for her problems - at any rate her being a baby Vaudeville star and being "Daddy's Little Princess" are one and the same thing. Blanche doesn't know how lucky she may have been that she was not her father's darling!! But the tragic thing is that she envies Jane still for that, despite herself having been a great movie star. And it's probably been fuelled by her mother as well, who saw Jane more as a rival than a child...

I love that Davis didn’t try to “prettify” her voice by trying to use vibrato or anything. It seems like she’s leaning into the fact that she doesn’t have a singing voice, which is really smart for the character, and a nice cover for her personally, if she even cared about that. Side trivia, Ava gardener actually had a gorgeous singing voice, and recorded some songs for her movies for the soundtracks releases, though in the movies itself the producers insisted on using a professional singer for the voice dub. I’ve heard both versions and Ava sounds almost as good as the professional singer imo.

I never thought Bette as Baby Jane looked "ghoulish", (at least not in black and white). Bette made the performances almost adorable and not entirely pathetic - if another actress tried this, it would have been a freak show !! Vanessa Redgrave and Lynn Redgrave did a remake of this film which showcased all the pitfalls of this movie. The truth ?? Bette and Joan were just great actresses who made these roles sad and horrendously tragic , but not a huge freak show like the Redgrave remake. Once again: Bette and Joan were just damned good actresses - they both deserved awards for their unforgettable performances. The movie is more multilayered than you might think, it's not till near the end that you realize that Blanche Hudson had always been the villain and was eaten up with jealousy of Jane when they were children. Remember when Blanche said: " you bet I won't forget" !! This is the most important part of the film and says everything about who the bitter one always was !! If you miss the beginning of them as children, you've missed everything.

Jealousy over admiration and 'Daddy's Affection ' Was it an accident, even though it was called an accident, or worst yet - was it intentional out of anger !!
This is a very good move - both were very talented.
In the public eye - there was a long running debate over who is the better actress - so Hollywood cashed in on that by ' pitting them against each other' in this movie. It's a true Classic !!

It was like she was having some kind of psychotic break...Baby Jane singing like a 4 year old and doing that dance routine like she was 4 is way too much...LOL....Ms. Davis and Ms. Crawford were both of a class that we will likely never see again.

A HUGE must have in many gay men's movie collection !
Love this scene so much,if Bette had won her third Oscar for this role, she could have retired happy.
Fabulous how she gets ready by placing one foot forward in front of the other.
Think it would have been hilarious if the mirror had cracked. And Victor Buono's
So sincere --"That's Wonderful" ha ! Would say anything for the job.
Great when she yanks the buzzer box out of the wall, and that slap at Blanche's face - heard three houses down I'm sure.... lol !
    Memorable scenes:
When Jane kicks the crap out of Blanche while she's on the floor.
The way Jane snubs the neighbor.
Jane sluffing her feet in the kitchen while prepping Blanche's meal.
And of course serving Blanche casserole ala Rat followed by that evil laugh.
    She's so deliciously low.
I adore Bette, other notable films she did in this era....
    The Nanny
    Dead Ringer
May both Bette and Joan RIP.

Well Ryan, that's very stereotyping, "A HUGE must in many gay men's movie collection !" It's 2022, not the 1960's. Not even the 1970's, but 2022. We're more than what you suggest.

Bette Davis was born in 1908 and was 62 when the movie came out in 1962 and Joan Crawford born in 1906 making her 64. Those were some brutal years in the country. No sunscreen and fancy facials to pamper your skin. Age was real. Plus they're wearing makeup. That's another thing, makeup had some pretty harsh chemicals in it back in those days. Ladies were lucky it didn't melt the flesh off their face.
