I agree Aileen, the guitar part is profound and sophisticated, and says as much as the vocal. Beautiful guitar work, wonderful song. Neil's voice in this performance sounds about as good as I've ever heard it as well.. Very clear and nice tone.
I've never cared for Neil Young's voice, yet he's written some of the most poignant songs ever and I can't imagine them having the same impact with someone else singing them. There is definitely a different level of feeling that he brings to the music.
Decades ago at the Live Aid concert all of these rockers came out in their costumes and bs, then Neil walks out on stage by his self in sneakers, blue jeans and a plain white tshirt and his guitar and blew everyone other band away performing ' Needle and The Damage Done '. A bunch of glitter and a chunk of gold. ...ok, that's being too hard on everyone else... still, it was striking.
Thank you for the heartfelt reaction Aileen! Though he has lived in the States most of his life Neil was born and raised in Canada and is genuine Canadian treasure! You must react to his song "Heart of Gold" from the same concert, and make sure you watch the intro too, as it shows a lot of his personality. Another one of his songs to get to one day is called "The Needle And The Damage Done". He has been called "The Godfather of Grunge" and I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert opening for Pearl Jam in 1994, a simply amazing concert!
That does sound like a great concert. I went to a Dave Matthews concert in 2006, maybe 2007, with a "surprise opening guest", damned if it didn't turn out to be Neil Young! Much like your's, it was an awesome show.
@@AdamAmbrose2112 Ya, the "Smell the Horse Tour that was later released as "WELD". I saw that show at the Cincinnati Gardens, I was disappointed at the time because he didn't do any acoustic, but I'm over it now, lol! Thank you for your heartfelt comments Aileen....the more I listen to this one, the more I think it's the greatest solo acoustic performance EVER! Utterly amazing. You can't believe that one person with an acoustic guitar can do that.
he has had such an amazing career as both a part of Crosby, Stills Nash (CSNY) but especially solo, also Buffalo Springfield together with Stephen Stills pre CSNY and Woodstock!
Neil has always been authentic ~ he made a point over the years to refuse companies that wanted him to endorse their products ~ yet he will fully get involved in causes he believes in ~ like supporting FarmAid & the First Nations ~ he has recorded some really powerful songs like "Ohio" which to this day still haunts me or "Southern Man"
He & his wife (at the time) Peggy also did an annual concert in S.F. for decades to benefit the special needs school their son went to (he has Cerebral Palsy). They were called "The Bridge" concerts.
Me too. When I hear it I envision a lonely "Old Man" with a few regrets who realizes he's near the end of his life and probably wondering what he could've done differently. But that's just me. Neil Young is an amazing song writer and singer. One of the best ever just like Bob Dylan. 🎸
@albertsmith93156- I read it different. I think he cares very much about what she thinks of him. He is trying to shake off getting dumped. He is telling himself "its all good, I dont need her, I'm going home to my sanctuary (his ranch- I'm rolling home to you) and I'll be fine". It's one of my favorite lines also. Rallying optimism in the face of grief. The old man made it through similar emotion, and so can I.
@@philipbarton2634 I took it as he was talking to the "old man", not a girl. To me, it explains the separation of generations... young people not trying to impress the people that came before. The beauty of art is that it can be interpreted differently by those that experience it. Great line.
Neil Young is a legend! As part of several bands over the decades, his own bands, and a solo artist, and he's still kicking! There's another video, well I think there's videos of that whole BBC concert, but there's a video of him doing another classic of his from that performance, "Heart Of Gold", that a lot of people react to which is awesome. There's also a great, more medal cover of that song by Black Label Society. Not sure if you know BLS, but Zakk Wylde is Ozzy's guitarist, and BLS is his own band that he also does. I'm not an expert, but I think BLS has an ever-changing line up because Zakk uses BLS to spotlight young up and coming musicians he likes to let them get some attention off of his name, then they move along, and he finds new ones, but ultimately, it's his band. I'm also guessing that you might not know Crosby, Stills, Nash, and sometimes Young, but you should check them out. David Crosby, the oldest and most famous at the time, had been part of The Byrds, a seminal early rock band of the movement in the 60s, until I think he got himself kicked out of that band. Graham Nash came to California from England after leaving The Hollies. Stephen Stills had been part of Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young. All three had sort of been without a band at the time, and had been part of the Laurel Canyon scene, where a bunch of musicians from the 60s and 70s all ended up living in Laurel Canyon, an area in LA nestled in the hills above the coast, and they had a little community where they'd all hang, jam, and whatever. So, Crosby, Stills, and Nash just happened to start playing together and realized they had something going, and ended up forming a group that was pretty phenomenal, though, they didn't always get along that well, and broke up and got back together several times over decades, and Neil Young sort of floated in and out as part of the group turning CSN into CSN and Y, but would bail and do his own thing when he had enough. At this point, I think David Crosby has pissed everybody else off enough that it's not likely that they'll ever reunite again, and well they're all not likely to be with us much longer anyways. There's documentaries on all this stuff, CSN, the Laurel Canyon scene, and David Crosby even made his own a few years ago. You should check out CSNY's song "Ohio" for a classic Neil Young riff though. This was all before I was even born, and I'm much older than you, so you might not be familiar, but the song is about the Kent State Massacre, where in 1970, students at Kent State held a protest against the Vietnam War, and some national guard soldiers opened fire on them, killing four unarmed students, and wounding nine more. Another student, took some photographs, one of which became a Pulitzer Prize winner, and one of the famous pics of one of the dead bodies ended up on the cover of Life magazine. The story goes that Graham Nash and Neil Young happened to be out at some cabin, somewhere, hanging out I guess, when they saw it, and Neil Young was so disturbed by it that he grabbed his guitar, and just walked out into the woods, and when he came back, he had written the song. Graham Nash got on the phone immediately, they recorded it the next day, and then released it as soon as it was ready, which wasn't a common thing then. There's so many great CSN, with and without Neil Young, that you should check out though. It should all be pretty easy to find since it's pretty ubiquitous. One of my personal favorites, sans Young, is "Southern Cross". Also, this is just some random trivia, but another famous Neil Young song is called "Southern Man", which is about the racism and history of slavery in the South, which was obviously a huge issue of the times, and Neil Young felt very strongly about. I know you've recently reacted to "Freebird", and Neil Young being originally Canadian, I guess Lynyrd Skynyrd took offense to the song, and in their song "Sweet Home Alabama", they included the lyric, "I hope Neil Young will remember, that a southern man don't need him around anyhow."
Oh! My bad. David Crosby did die back in January, and I forgot. He had been close for a while, and he knew it was coming when he made his documentary, but I thought he had miraculously been sticking around longer than he expected. So, definitely no CSNY reunion!
Another good CSN song you should check out is "Woodstock". It's actually originally a Joni Mitchell song, who had been in relationships with both David Crosby and Graham Nash, and apparently, she was really excited because she always wanted someone to do a real rock n roll version of one of her songs. She's another one you should check out, and I think you might really dig. If anything, besides being an incredible singer and song writer, she was a very strong and independent woman that refused to do things any way but her own.
I’m going to suggest “Birds” by Neil Young. It’s not one of his biggest hits but I think it will give you goosebumps from head to toe. Also now that you discovered Neil you should check out his all star band CSNY ( Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). Their song “ Our House” will warm your heart.
This performance and this song embodies a singer/songwriter at their craft. So glad you enjoyed that. Other Neil songs…”Needle and the Damage done”, “Southern Man” & “Heart of Gold”.
A fellow Canadian, Neil Young has been a musical chameleon for the length of his long career. His early work as a member of Buffalo Springfield (Mr. Soul or Broken Arrow) as well as almost everything the band did. Next, he joined up with Crosby, Stills and Nash. Ohio is a cry of anguish as well as an angry call for change, among so many other great songs from them. His solo career has been so many different styles and always interesting, poignant and enjoyable. Old Man, Harvest, Heart Of Gold, Like A Hurricane, Down By The River, Cinnamon Girl, Harvest Moon, Long May You Run, Rockin' In The Free World, The Needle And The Damage Done, and so many more.
Rock-folk album "Harvest" brought this song to the world and Neil got accompanied by some music royalty: Harvest is the fourth studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, released on February 1, 1972, by Reprise Records, catalogue number MS 2032. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two tracks and vocals by guests David Crosby, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, and James Taylor
Classic Neil from the early 1970s. He's 77 now with a very long, rich and creative career. I'm 71 and grew up with his music. As a fellow Canadian we're very proud of him. Listen to "Helpless" Aileen. Love your reaction videos, very interesting inter-generational appreciation.

When I was a youth, 'Heart of Gold' was my jam. I'd listen to the radio hoping for it to play, then singing along as if I wasn't causing harm to my brother's eardrums. 😁 I did not know it was Neil Young until I was much older, but it is one of my all time favorites. Thanks for another great reaction, good fortune!
" Ohio " is a truly great song that Niel wrote and preformed with CS&N. You might want google " Kent State Shootings-1970" before , just for some background
One of the deepest rabbit holes there is,period. And probably THE most diverse artist, stylistically,in modern music history. Put it this way, there's another side, one of many actually,to Neil's music that earned him the moniker "The Godfather of Grunge". And pushing 80 now,he's still pumping out great music. Right up there with the greatest songwriters of all-time. I'll suggest anything off his Everybody Knows This is Nowhere album from 1969,a couple years before this video. It's his first album with Crazy Horse, and Neil Young and Crazy Horse could be an entire rabbit hole in and of itself. Try out Cinnamon Girl,Down By The River, the title track of Cowgirl In The Sand. LOVE your reactions.
Try the first side of his After the Gold Rush album, for the same effect. Also, the single "Ohio," released in reaction to the May 4, 1970 killings of four Kent State University students who were protesting the Vietnam war.
50 PLUS YEARS listening to Neil... he like Bob Dylan very gifted musicians, they're legends! Like the Beatles their music will be relevant for decades to come. So much music of his to explore! You are in for an experience of great rock n roll music, both acoustic and electric! You know, talking about electric, just for grins, the thing is there's so many, but nevertheless, if you like to get an idea of his electric side, search on TH-cam for Cinnamon Girl. There's several, both acoustic and electric. Look for the electric version titled "Neil You & Crazy Horse - Cinnamon Girl (live 1991in real HD) Fun rock n roll video to watch! As a suggestion, Rolling Stone had a special edition of Neil couple of years ago. His life, and their take of his top 100 songs. They missed about 17, that I contacted them about them in no uncertain terms.... lol! Should have been at least his top 125! Since you asked, hopefully you can find the edition from Rolling Stone, there you'll find a treasure trove of of songs. However like I said there's at least 17 I came up with that should have made the list. Nice reaction Aileen. I see you covered Old Man just couple of days ago and first time seeing your channel... I subscribed because of your reaction to NY! Good job girlfriend! Peace, Love & Groovy Tunes!
You would love Neil's song "Cinnamon Girl" - it's about a beautiful girl who looks like a Bright Angel like you. Also 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Cortez The Killer", and "Harvest Moon".
I was in my mid teens in Canada when this song and the Harvest album came out played it on repeat. You should know there's other songs on this album I think you'd like. Neil Young is a Canadian icon for many of us who have followed his career on a parallel path. Thank you for such a wonderful reaction. I loved your words and appreciate your passion for music you are awesome. 🤟🤘
Sorry Terry, he is an American icon now, he's got a U.S. Citizenship about 7 years ago, but you shared with us so we can do the same, I've seen him literally a dozen times!
@@marke8323 Yes I knew that and as your CBB ( cross boarder buddies ) we have no problem sharing with you especially when it comes to music. I'm impressed you saw him so many times that's very cool. Cheers
@@marke8323 You don't generally relinquish your original citizenship when you gain a new one. I know this because I'm dual UK and Canadian. Neil is still very Canadian, not only because of his roots and where he was raised, but also in the elements and content and perspective of the songs he writes: see "Ambulance Blues" and "Helpless," just for two examples. Neil is still thought of as a Canadian artist by most music fans, I think. I mean, he's even associated with plaid flannel shirts, the style of loggers everywhere. 😉
Neil Young is one of Canada's gems. Look at his song book gorgeous, there's lots of treasures. Neil Young is one of the best singer songwriters of his and any generation! 👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋💋🦊🦊🦊🦊🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
If one wants to explore Neil Young, I would start with his early 70's Albums Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, the Legendary Album After The Goldrush and Harvest.
Neil Young has a vast and awesome library of songs. One of my generations true poet's. Some of my favorites - 'Harvest Moon', 'Like a Hurricane', 'The Needle and the Damage Done', & 'Long may you run'. Congratulations! Your at the beginning of being introduced to some frickin' amazing music Enjoy! 👍
Pure Neil Young greatness! I'm 66 years old and have been a fan of Neil Young since his days as a member of "Buffalo Springfield" along with Stephen Stills, both future members of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Look up the story behind this song. It's such a human experience.
Neil is one of the very best (imho), he was a very successful folk singer who scored hit after hit with his wordsmith abilities and acoustic guitar and harmonica skills. And then he broke the biggest rule in folk music, "thou shall not use electrical amplified guitars", and he introduced electric guitar and rock into his musical catalog. This could've killed his career, if he wasn't Neil Young.. because, the man is a musical genius and gave us countless of amazing songs. A few to keep in mind : "Heart of gold", "Needle and the damage done", "Rocking in the free world", "Harvest moon", "Southern man" (which prompted a reply from Lynyrd Skynyrd with the song "Sweet home Alabama"), "Ohio", "Like a hurricane", and "Powderfinger" are all songs you should check out at some time, you'll love them and hear all "shades of Neil" in that selection.
Genuine and from the heart. You referred to him as young, I'm 68 and had an 8 track tape of the album Harvest when I was in high school. They were 3/10$ and never worked very well. Great song, great album.
Yes, yes, yes! He's truly a wizard of songwriting, arrangement and delivery. His dynamics, lyrics, singing and playing style are SO powerful, it's incredible what he can do with only an acoustic guitar. Keep going with Neil, he has so much more for you to discover! Beautiful video!!
Great reaction Aileen, thank you. As said below, a must Neil Young track to experience is "Heart of Gold" from the same concert (Harvest 50th Anniversary). His quirky personality shines in this as does his musical talent, playing both the guitar and harmonica at the same time.
Aileen, Explore Neil's career, not only as a solo artist, but with The Buffalo Springfield (with Stephen Stills, Richie Furay & fellow Canadians Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin), and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young -- TREASURES GALORE EVERYWHERE -- Seeing The Buffalo Springfield live when I was in college around 1968 was something I'll never forget -- Neil & Stills were playing dueling lead guitars in a song and jumping up & down face to face like little kids in a backyard competition ..... "Expecting to Fly" from them, "Mr. Soul", etc, etc ..... & of course "Ohio" from CSN&Y about the Kent State university student slayings by the National Guard during an anti-Vietnam war protest -- Neil's career, PHEW -- Truly one of the GREATS
Try the song "Don't let it bring you down" from the same show at the BBC. He has a lot of great songs though. "Heart of gold", "Sugar Mountain", "Needle and the damage done". To name a few.
There are many different "Neil Young's" as his career has had many facets and dipped his toes in many genres and worn many hats literally and figuratively, but the two main "Neil's" are the folky Neil (as seen here) and the hard-rocking guitar-distorted Neil with his band Crazy Horse which earned him the title of the "Godfather of Grunge". All facets of his career are worth checking out.
Thank you for this reaction!!! My brother used to listen to this song all the time this one and Heart of gold by Neil We played both songs at my brother's funeral he passed from a car accident in 2016 Again thank you😢

Just a FYI.. He is the "Young" in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY). Absolutely worth a dive into!
imo
You have to listen to a track from this show where he plays the harmonica like Heart of Gold

Beautiful song Beautiful reacton from a Beautiful young lady
Neil's band is called,'crazy horse's, try Cinnamon Girl . He is the father of grunge . Thank you ❤😊
I just enjoy seeing your reactions to music I grew up with. There are many rabbit holes you can go down with Neil Young.
He brought so much to Crosby Stills and Nash when he joined and the band became Crosby Stills Nash and Young
7:20 The highs and lows are thus: the reaction to the words is the heavy part...the guitar keeps soaring the emotions upwards.
You would love Neil's song "Cinnamon Girl" - it's about a beautiful girl who looks like a Bright Angel like you. Also 'Only Love Can Break
Your Heart", "Cortez The Killer", and "Harvest Moon".
I first listened to this in 1971 and today I am 71 and the feeling with this song stays the same.....
There is absolutely emotion in guitar playing! And it's fascinating to hear a player's personality come through in their music
Neil Young is a self taught guitarist, so yer feelings are right on.
“Doesn’t mean that much to me , to mean that much to you” perfect embodiment of Neil Young imo.
Now do CSNY doing “Ohio” which Neil wrote in the days after the shocking & horrific Kent State massacre.
React to this same show when he sings Heart of Gold. He plays acoustic guitar and harmonica at the same time. Classic
Neil young is the best glad you were able to react to this
It’s crazy how when he’s done, you realize it was just him and his guitar. He is a master of both instruments. Great reaction!
Really like your show! Two more from Neil...Sugar Mountain and Needle and the Damage Done. Keep up the good work!
This legend is in his late 70’s now and has a massive catalogue of music, I would suggest Cortez the Killer and Cowgirl in the Sand.
Good fishin' music right here. Blue gills love it.
Love Neil Young. If you ever do him again make sure to check out "Heart of Gold"
If one wants to explore Neil Young, I would start with his early 70's Albums Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, the Legendary Album After The Goldrush and Harvest.
Neil Young - My my, hey hey (Out of the blue)
Neil Young Is Such Genuine Person/Artist
Heart of Gold, next.🙏🏽
Aileen
Neil Young has and his backup band jammed this song.
You'll like his song After The Goldrush
This entire concert is gorgeous
"Heart of Gold" from this recording is also pretty cool. Guitar, Singing and Harmonica.
You should check out Like a Hurricane by Neil Young! Very powerful love song!
Do more Neil. Love it. You really got the song.😍🇨🇦👍
Neil Young has been a favorite for many years . Just wait until you hear My My Hey Hey , but then you'll have to hear Hey Hey , My My !!
He has a beautiful voice as well as playing the guitar so well.
I'm staring at my father as I play this song, he is at his time soon. I'm playing this song, praying, hoping I have him for just another moon.
Forgot to add I’d highly recommend Revolution Blues, very underrated but also very brilliant!
Beautiful woman and reaction! Stay safe! 🤘😁🇺🇸
Check him out with Buffalo Springfield singing "For What It's Worth"! Great tune about the 1960's and early '70's. Check out the live version.
"Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you" . . . One of the best lines ever written.
For a singer-songwriter accompanying themselves on an acoustic guiter--IT DOESN'T get any better than that!!
What a great reaction! You are perfect at reviewing music, as you really feel it. Not all do. Thanks for another great review Aileen. 👌
Classic! Jump into the rabbit hole!! Try CSN&Y great harmonies, guitar etc!!❤️
Needle and the Damage Done, and Don't Let it Bring You Down are two of my favorites. Neil is absolutely great. I got to see him in concert in 2019.
My favorite performance from Neil young = (keep on) rocking in a free world , live mtv music award gala 1993 with pearl jam
Check out cowgirl in the sand or cinnamon girl by Neil Young. He has lots of amazing songs.
Awesome reaction, thank you!!!
Such an honest reaction, wonderful to watch. It means a lot to see this mean so much to you.
Thanx! Beautiful and touching reaction to a beautiful touching song!
Genuine and from the heart. You referred to him as young, I'm 68 and had an 8 track tape of the album Harvest when I was in high school. They were 3/10$ and never worked very well. Great song, great album.
The beautiful simplicity of an acoustic guitar, a passionate voice, and a story from the depths of one's soul...
"doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you". Best lyric ever.
Neil Young sings straight into your soul.
I love the guitar acoustic mastery here this is sick
This is from a BBC TV special in England. You should check out the whole show. Brilliant!
So many songs to suggest, especially if you're include Crosby, stills and Nash 🙂 cinnamon girl, hey hey my my, Ohio etc etc etc
Heart Of Gold, from the same concert is also a great song by him!
This was ‘72. So young, so gifted!
*"Helpless"* and or *"Needle and Damage Done"*
Nice song choice to react aileen
Thank you for this reaction!!!
My brother used to listen to this song all the time this one and Heart of gold by Neil
We played both songs at my brother's funeral he passed from a car accident in 2016
Again thank you😢
