Neil Young once played a whole set of lesser known tracks; when he could sense the crowd getting restless and wanting him to play the hits, he appeased them by telling them he was going to play something that was more familiar to them. As the crowd started cheering and applauding, he proceeded to play the first song from the set again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 legend!
I heard this differently, with him opening and closing a set with the same song, among a host of lesser known cuts. As he was leaving the stage, promoter Bill Graham shouted at him, “No way asshole, go back out there and play something they KNOW.” So for an encore he did the song a third time and left. LOL.
One of the most prolific songwriters to ever bless our ears, still putting out music today! Bless you Neil Young. Huge part of my lifestyle soundtrack!!!
High school- a time that opened me up to the depth, emotion and "art" of music. I wore this album out to the bone. Neil's voice always has this sense of sadness and longing to it, yet there's this prevailingly ethereal air of purpose and hope. He will never stop speaking to me. 💕
Interesting story about this one. Neil bought a huge ranch in California and there was an old "Caretaker" that was employed there and lived on the property. He looked after the land and animals and things. Neil struck up a friendship with him, and of course kept him on as an employee. Beautiful.
Look at how Neil's guitar playing in this is so raw and yet smooth and fluid, and the same can be said of his voice... and those two things go so well together, and are all he needs to create a performance like this, intimate and personal. Here's a guy in his mid twenties, who can get up on a stage and bring a song like this to life, and do it so organically and perfectly that there's no way it could have been improved, really. Just a man and his guitar, stark and spare musically, but there's a purity to that, and only so many people who can do it this well. A thing of beauty. I usually prefer studio versions of songs 99 times out of 100, but this is one of those rare exceptions, this is a great and wonderful performance.
Was born in 1957, loved my parents music, Sinatra, Louis, Ella, Bing etcetera. However blessed to be a teenager of the 70's. Young, Eagles, Carol King, Supertramp, Bee Gees, America, Beach boys, soooo many more. Love seeing you both enjoying 'the classics'.
I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.
AND HE'S GOT 100'S OF GREAT SONGS ASIA & BJ!!! 👍😊 PLENTY OF 3 MIN. BANGERS WITH THE ACOUSTIC & HARMONICA, AND PLENTY OF 8 MIN. TRACKS WITH HIS ELECTRIC WHERE HE JUST STARTS RANTING AND GOING OFF, AMAZINGGGG!!! 😊AND ALSO HE HAS SEVERAL PIANO TRACKS SO HE DID IT ALL PLUS SONGWRITING & SINGING! 👌
I first heard this album just as it came out I was16 old man affected me deeply then and moves me even more deeply now at 65 one of my basis song long live the godfather of punk .knock em dead Neil
Got to go on a tour bus with Neil Young. He was awesome. Got back stage passes and ppl were grabbing me . Security helped me. I was 22 at the time. I treated them right. Booked rooms for the whole crew under different names and got them food. My mgr at the time locked down the kitchen. So I ordered them food at steak restaurant and picked it up. I actually got on tour bus that night after the show to be told sorry you missed it but we gotta roll out. Went home bummed out only to be woken up by for real Neil Young asking me to meet up with them catch a ride to another show so I could see them in concert for helping him and his crew. Didn’t really believe it was him. But he sang me a lil bit of needle n the spoon. I jumped up squeezing. Said I’ll be there in hour n half. Was a great show. Scary at the end with every one grabbing me trying to get my back stage pass. The thing is Neil Young was a perfect gentleman. Called his wife right away. Then invited my friend and I to eat with them. Rode in the bands bus. Back to my car. Told them if they were came back they could park at the farm I lived at no one would bother them and could eat all the home cooking they could handle. It was a plan and a hand shake . Loads of pics too.
This song is a legendary classic, there is no doubt about it. The thing is you can't define or equate class, you just absolutely know it when you hear it, and this is definitely it! Well done guys, respectfully and professionally reviewed. Ps love watching Asia's concentration and her changing facial expressions, so precious..
Major artist right there🤘🇺🇸 neil has a large stage presense. His electric guitar will make you get lost in your head. Try like a hurricane Cowgirl in the sand. And best of all down by the river
Love Neil Young! Reminds of the 60s & 70s…. Mellow story teller… from my Hippie Days… thank you for enjoying & listening to him! Heart Of Gold… Try out more!
Neil Young is one of my favs. Love it! If I remember correctly, he said he bought a ranch and he wrote this song about the old ranch hand that stayed on.
Neil Young is brilliant and versatile. He has acoustic songs, but he also rocks out electric. Another couple of acoustic songs, Silver & Gold and Harvest Moon; and for Electric, Rockin in the Free World. There's a reason he's known as The Godfather of grunge. 🎸🎸
I'm glad you enjoy Neil Young. His music, all of it, has stayed in the top 2 favorite music in my life, along with Van Morrison. Their music just never gets old., and NEIL young's is sheer poetry.
Fabulous choice, it reminds me of my teen years. I graduated high school the year this song was released. I am beyond grateful to have grown up with the musicians and songs at this time in history.
Good to see you enjoying the music I listened to as a young man. This song works both ways. People my age should always remember that the younger generation are finding their way just the same as we did and making mistakes, just as we did. On the other hand, when you come across people my age (69), remember we were the cool kids in the audience of the gigs you're watching. We don't all start wearing beige, buying 'easy listening' CDs and complaining about change. We're still the rockers we always were. 🤘🙂
Young wrote this in his truck on the way back to his farm (Rollin home to you). The song also references Young's wealth at a young age, which the old man was in awe of: give me things that won't get lost like a coin that won't get tossed. IOW, I got lucky but in the end it's the intangibles like love that really count....
@@clydeb7713 He mentioned right before he started singing that he wrote it for the caretaker of his ranch that he had just bought from two lawyers. The old ranch hand who took care of the cows and stuff. I wished Asia and BJ had played that part.😕
I have seen a lot of live music over the years. Neil Young's "Rust Never Sleeps" album and tour rates right up there with my top 10. so many great songs on that album. What a career. As a side note, I was a San Jose Sharks season ticket holder. Many times Neil was there with his son watching the game. He is dedicated to his son. He also loves toy trains.
Neil is one of my all time favourites, introduced by my Dad when I was probably 3. To add to your side note, Neil’s Dad was an announcer for Hockey Night in Canada, way back in the day. We Canadians know many a hockey connection. 🇨🇦
The studio version of this song is really good too, with harmonizing back up singers, and more instrumentation. You'll love it. Neil Young, aka "The Godfather of Grunge," has such an amazing guitar picking style, not to mention his voice. Please react to more Neil Young - Heart of Gold.
"Cinnamon girl" is my favorite Neil Young tune (But this one is great as well!). I actually thought he was at the top of his game when he colluded with Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
Neil has such a great voice! True Canadian legend. Folks don't mention enough what an excellent guitarist he is. Weather playing folk or rocking hard he is an excellent player.
An absolute legend. Period. So many different sounds, all of them priceless. “Cinnamon Girl”, “Down By The River”, “Heart Of Gold”, “Harvest Moon”, all of his work with Crosby Stills and Nash; so much to say about him; impossible to do so in a comment and I never said that for any other artist ❤️
