    Most alternate tunings used by Soundgarden are fun to play around in. Also +1 for baritone guitars, I got an ML1 modern and it changed my world. Such an underappreciated instrument.

    • @royalcat10
      @royalcat10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Could just use baritone tuning, rather than purchasing a baritone guitar as well, since the *only* difference between a baritone and standard guitar is scale length. A 25.5 in. scale length guitar will handle B standard (BEAD F# B) fairly well, if you beef up the strings a bit. Using .13 gauge strings in B standard, quite literally, will have roughly the same poundage and tension as using .10s in E standard. (I wouldn't go lower than A though on a standard guitar, though. Intonation WILL get really shitty really fast if you don't have the extended scale length.)

    • @alexanderdenison2950
      @alexanderdenison2950 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the main reason baritones fly under the radar is because people just prefer to get an extended range instrument at that point, and I don't really blame them lol

    I just love drop D for how soft it can make songs. Everlong is a perfect example- there's some beautiful soft, slow and low areas where the D string adds a sort of rumble under the chords. The chorus uses it to get some more bass for the powerchords. Best alternate tuning, by far.

      Drop d is mostly all I play of course I’m a metal head but even when I’m just messing around when I pick up the guitar and just start noodling and jamming around drop d is the best and my All time favorite. It’s like best of both worlds can write some heavy ass riffs but also play casually without changing tuning or anything.

    "Ostrich" tuning is most fun. D-D-D-D-D-D. Some Ds are a bit tight and tense. Some Ds are floppy and loose. With an acoustic you wan't to bend the Hell out of the loose Ds for a cool Indian Sitar sound. On electric you need huge amounts of reverb and a tremolo cranked at maximum volume.

      Robert Fripp's playing might not be understood by some. However,he's unique and original ,obscure,abstract etc. King Crimson would change total band line up players from album to album, but just Robert alone still keeps the King Crimson's sonic melodic vibe alive. You know it's King Crimson regardless of the era and line up.
      He deserves recognition for originality.

    I tuned my guitar to open D cuz I was watching a playthrough of "Shibuya" by Yvette Young (well, she plays the song with a capo, but whatever), but because my strings are like six months old, they don´t stay in tune well. One day, coming back from college, I picked up my guitar and the strings tune themselves higher by a semitone, but I didn´t like it, so I tuned it another semitone higher and now I play in open E, wich I like sooooo much more than open D. (I could´ve just said this at the beggining, but I don´t have anything else to do).

The tuning is just so unique to me; DGDGBC, it just sounds majestic. Also The Day I Tried to Live’s tuning is EEBBBB. I also recommend checking out Badmotorfinger, with Mind Riot; every string tuned to E and Rusty Cage & Searching with My Good Eye Closed; both songs are tuned BADGBE. Soundgarden is a great band, especially for alternate tunings, and is actually my favourite band of all time, they are just so unique. Highly recommend checking them out.

    • @lukasstrait9307

      MVSA,
      This is part of the Wikipedia article on Superunknown. I only listed the tunings, not the time signatures which are also covered following this excerpt.
      Everyone enjoy and try some of these yourselves. They work!
      Check out the article when so inclined.
      Soundgarden utilized alternative tunings and odd time signatures on several of the album's songs. "Spoonman", "Black Hole Sun", "Let Me Drown" and "Kickstand" were performed in drop D tuning while "Mailman" and "Limo Wreck" employed CGDGBE tuning. Some songs used more unorthodox tunings: "My Wave" and "The Day I Tried to Live" are both in an EEBBBB tuning. "Head Down" and "Half" both utilised CGCGGE tuning, "4th of July" is in a similar CFCGBE tuning; and "Like Suicide" is performed in DGDGBC tuning.
      ------------------------------------------------------------
      Btw, I would like to note that Kim Thayall says that TRUE Drop D tuning is NOT just dropping the low E to D.
      He says it involves actually dropping both the low E AND the A down.anfull pitch.
      So low E becomes D and A drops down to G.
      Straight from the horses mouth
      And he should know. He claims they STARTED the trend.
      Rock on!

    Sometimes I just like dropping my B string down to an A for E, A, D, G, A, E I found it was a subtle way to get my feet wet in alternate tunings without getting too far away from the familiar, but having enough of a change to get more out of my playing.
    Then there is that crazy tuning Alex DeGrassi uses for his song Western. D, A, D, G, C#, Eb which is a bit strange, but when you hear what Alex does with this tuning it is tempting to want to experiment with it. I had a guitar teacher years ago who actually made me learn Western, and it was by far one of the most interesting learning experiences on guitar in my nearly 32-years of playing.

    I have some questions:
    1- Isn't the Open D tuning a Celtic Tuning with the G string down a half step?
    2- The first tuning, F# A# C# F# A# F#, isn't it like a Open F# Major?
    3- The New Standard Tuning, C D G A E G, can it be used on a Baritone Guitar?

    • @mickeyrube6623
      @mickeyrube6623 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Allow me:
      1. Don't know about Celtic tunings...so...no?
      2. It *IS* open F# tuning. The black keys are F#, G#, A#, C#, and D#. These notes map out the F#major/D#minor pentatonic scales, in the key of D#, of course. So I got pretty excited, cause I never thought to doing something llike that, but then we just get a open major tuning. LAME.
      Try F#-A#-C#-G#-A#-D#. Open F#maj13 tuning. The REAL black key tuning.
      3.First of all, C-D-G-A-E-G *IS NOT* new standard tuning. C-G-D-A-E-G *is*!
      For a 7 string version try: F#-C#-G#-D#-A#-C#-G# or, F#-C#-G#-D#-F#-C#-G# and pray that high e string don't bust!
      Btw, never tried any of these tunings, and they never been used, far as I know. Good luck!
      Edit: just realized question 3 was for baritones, not 7 strings! Of course it could used with a baritone guitar, it would just be a fourth down.

    Here are two other favorites of mine : (high to low) EBBEBE (or DAADAD if you don’t want to bust a string...) used in Suite Judy Blue Eyes, and EBADAD one of many unusual tunings used by Steve Howe.

      Michael Greiner you just have to tune the low Estring to DC and it doesn’t work with some chords and you have to mute it.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention any Mark tremonti tunings. DADAAd and BADGBe have become a couple of go to tunings of mine.
    Also, 7 string tuned to BEADF#Be is fun too.
