  • This video is a character analysis on 5 ladies from the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. This video and what I say are based on my thoughts, opinions, and observations from my childhood and adult perceptions of these characters.
I am not saying that these woman are without flaws, or are always well written, I am however, saying that they are relatively good examples of strong female characters within their franchise.
I have been playing the sonic games and enjoying sonic media for the last 15 years. Over the years, these women are the ones that have had a substantial impact on femininity and I felt a desire to talk about it!
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy! :)

Being a "strong female character" is more than being a physically capable character. Blaze deserves more attention, but she hasn't contributed to the story as much as these characters, meaning she's not as much of a "strong female character"

@@theinkticianHer entire story in Sonic Rush is about her learning to not close herself off from the world because she's a princess and that it's okay for her to have friends. In Sonic 06 she acts like a mentor to Silver and is willing to sacrifice herself in the end. And in the IDW comics she's been shown to be very posh and princessy but intelligent, rational, and extremely powerful. We haven't gotten a lot of Blaze, but what we have undeniably shows she is a strong and complex female character with SO MUCH potential.

I think one intresting thing about Sonia is that, while she does have the "girl that cares for her apperance and dislikes being dirty", she isn't overly femenine in her expression, unlike Amy who is more femenine leaning (poofy dresses, cute mannerisms, crush over a boy), Sonia's looks are more alternative punk, she rides a motorcycle and uses a music weapon more inclined at rock to fight.
I think this is great for 2 reasons: first it let's girls know that you are not obliged to dress either super femenine or masculine, and that you can dress in a way that you want. And second, just because you dress more alternative, it doesn't mean you can't be proud of your apperance and care that the stuff you want to wear gets ruined.

If you’re saying that “Let girls know that they are not obliged to dress either super f or m and that you can dress in a way that you want” then why are you judging Amy on how she dress? It’s Amy’s style and that has no connection on the differences of Sonia

    • @Pootis-Spencer
      @Pootis-Spencer 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

@@CherrySheesh you might be reading wrong my comment. I never judged Amy's way of dressing/expressing, this was a comment about how Sonia, despite not dressing in the same way as Amy (who dresses femenine because she likes it as that's her personality), still has the "femenine trait" of caring for her clothing, the same as Amy, because that's the way she likes to express herself, and both of them are equaly valid and having a certain way to express themselves in fashion doesn't make them "better" or "worse girls".
This was a comment on how a show had no problem having a female character who dressed more alternative to how many girls in thay era would be dress and wasn't chastised for it, and how still she cared deeply for looking good in her own way, which is way more important to the self steem that what you imagine. I never said "Sonia is better than Amy because she dresses cool", I said "Sonia let's girls know that you can care for yourself and your apperance in any style you want to wear, and what clothes you want to wear doesn't make you less of a girl, just that you enjoy different things"

    • @Pootis-Spencer

@@MissMediayt dw, I just wanted to comment my thoughts (I didn't even thought you'd respond).
I never watched the show where Sonia appeared, but with the clips you showed it made me thing a lot about her (and how I'd liked to have a character like her when growing up), especially with her brothers and on how old shows used to write girls with brothers.
I think most old shows did 1 of two things:
The "annoying sister" trope ("uh this is my one sister and we hate eachother, she's always thinking on boys and shopping and always cares for her clothes than anything important like the stuff we boys do, when we play in the mud and come back her shoes she said she wanted all week get dirty and she gets mad at us, what a dumb girly girl")
Or the Disney "one of the boys" trope: ("I'm the only girl in my family, it's only me and my dad and 6 brothers only, they taught me the important stuff like punching and figthing and reparing stuff and sports because in this house there's no place for girly stuff, that's useless, because in this family we are all men, why waste my time with girly stuff when I have to be like the men")
With Sonia is neither of those, she's clearly in the adventure and is not getting in the way of their mutual goal, and despite having 2 brothers she still expressed herself in a more femenine punk style. They are written just as siblings regardless of gender, when they annoy her, is not because she's a girl or has girly attitudes, I actually felt it was normal sibling teasing, siblings just take one thing and tease you with it in a "harmless" way (my brother teased me because I confused were the west was because I forgot where the sun rises from). When they tease her is done in a kinda relatable way to me, I am the only girl of my family and seeing her with her siblings and have this really close relationship was endearing, I could see traits of them and me in the Sonic siblings.

I love that in SA2B Rouge was playing every side and easily one of the most crafty characters in the game. She aligns with Eggman in part to get more information for the government but is also staying in good enough graces with them to still benefit from Eggman if he ends up succeeding.
At the same time she also lets the Sonic crew freely board the ARK so she can make a grab for the master emerald pieces. But even then she’s not heartless either considering how she just…gives up on getting the master emerald because knuckles showed her kindness. She doesn’t betray him or use her supposed flirtation, she uses quite a bit of guile and wit.
She was a great opportunist, one who capitalized on everyone’s mistakes. But she also wasn’t a heartless monster who refuses to care about others either, as she’s able to give genuine kindness and sincerity to multiple people.

When it's comes to writing female characters most writers fall into the trap of writing Strong, Independent Females as Rude, Selfish and condescending, hypocrites who belittle others and only take responsibility if they get credit for it.
Shows like Kim Possible, MLP: FIM, PPG Classic, My life as a teenage Robot had great written characters who were relatable.
When they made a mistake they, admitted to those mistakes and tried to improve.
When being a leader they didn't belittle their team, and acknowledge their deeds and rewarded them.
And when it came to personality they became less of a stereotype and more of an actual character, due to their experiences.
What makes a strong character no mater what Race, Sex or Gender is not just them being repeatable, but mainly them having a actual conscious.
Admitting that what their doing may hurt others or themselves, knowing good from bad and giving up things even though it may affect them.
They reason why people don't like characters like Captain Marvel or many poorly written characters now a days is the fact they remove compassion and empathy from them.
They just expect people to get behind their mindset and logic and be submissive.
And how every conversation you have with them is a 1 way conversation, where they take over.
What makes Sonic and his Friends beloved is that they treat each other as equals, they weigh their odds and don't belittle one another.
If there's a problem they talk it out instead of just holding it in.
Thats what makes a strong character.

@MissMedia0430 I think the Slap is great plot point for different reason. Sure, I won't deny Sally wasn't right in that situation and was driven by her emotions in that moment, but that's what makes is good. It actually shows that Sally is quite a flawed character(so the Mary Sue complain from haters is just a nitpick because of this and the fact, that Sally isn't great at cooking and Amy helped her with it) and can do questionable actions, even if we may think it's bad writing. Characters can be obligated to behave like douchebags sometimes in the most difficult situations, that what makes them deep.
Besides, there is a plot in early Archie comics which were more in Adventures of Sonic style where Sally smacked Sonic's head with the broom just because he didn't do the things her way and that was much more mean and out of character

  • @ViciousButPrecious
    @ViciousButPrecious 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

This is such a great video and I really hope to see a part 2 from you.
Regarding Rouge, I feel as though there's an aspect of her character that gets complitely ignored by fans and that is her status as rival to Knuckles. People will often paint her as nothing but a love interest, which couldn't be further from the truth. She is a rival first, just as Shadow is to Sonic. Her rival status also says a lot about just how strong she is, when she's meant to be an equally strong rival to Knuckles. You know, the character the punched the super out of Super Sonic. I know people like to make the argument that he's "holding back" whenever they fight, because he doesn't wanna hurt a woman, but he's clearly exhausted after each and every fight. I know we never directly get to see this aspect of her character, but the implications are clearly there and I wish that got explored more.

    • @rainpooper7088
      @rainpooper7088 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I think the main reason people don't like to acknowledge it is that this rivalry was arguably introduced as a way to nerf Knuckles and keep him out of his position as Sonic's rival so Shadow could take over. Him losing his Super form to a freaking retcon in the next game didn't exactly help either, it only cemented the fact that SEGA didn't want Knuckles and Tails to compete with "real protagonist" characters like Sonic and Shadow, so they dumped them in a lower power tier with characters who don't have any super powers at all, including but not limited to Rouge herself. Knuckles regularly competing with Sonic, the main protagonist who always wins, is a way more impressive feat than him competing with Rouge, a character with no special powers who most of the fandom sees as nothing more than walking fanservice. To most people, Rouge being Knuckles' rival over Sonic doesn't make Rouge look strong, it makes Knuckles look weak.
The thing is, and that's something that annoys ME that people (including official media) keep forgetting about Rouge: She doesn't just fight with flight and kicks. She's a spy, she has super spy equipment, the Charm Ray, etc. So if Knuckles is Superman who is super strong and has mythical powers, she's more like Batman (no pun intended) who is a regular person with no special powers, but makes up for it with a sharp mind and high-tech equipment. And no one would say that Superman sucks if he got beaten by Batman because they're both powerful and respected in their own right.

A little too late, but thank you for mentioning and covering Sonia, in my opinion she had the most development out of the trio and had the heaviest episodes(like when she had to choose which brother she must safe).
Unfortunately, I think Sonia still will be viewed as "rich snob" on the surface level when she's far from that position. If she had complained about the dirt all the time she wouldn't have dealt with keeping her motorcycle up and running. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if she was a mechanic instead of Manic(though she's good at electronics too).
The unlisted point I like about her is that she's the most emotional of the group, not to say Sonic and Manic have rocks as hearts, but Sonia is the most open to show her emotions and let it go. Though it's a filler, I love that episode where Sonia wanted to go to ball and happily cries when Sonic and Maniv gave her a ticket, it's kinda depressing she still copes about her carefree life when being a loose criminal at the moment. And also, she can't spend time with Mindy like in childhood when always being on the run.
Honestly, I think Sonia falling for Knuckles was the most logical option. Bartlebey was a spineless yet pompous jerk, Stripes tried to sell her to Robotnik, I don't even see any hint between her and Rafi, the desert town guy who saved her and later got his legs robotisized.
She cared the most about Knux from the start. Yeah, it would be valid her crush kinda just happened in Chaos Emerald three-parter, but still he saved her from falling after that scene, plus he especially felt down and desperate when saying he will capture Sonia for Robotnik and instantly rushed to save her from robotisation. And, I think it may be obvious that Sonia gave her heart to Knuckles after she kissed him on the cheek when she has never done it before with other guys.

  • @KatelynJewel

You described the characters very well.
Bunnie Rabbot was a great character and I wish SatAM was able to do more with her. I always thought it was cool how she was half-roboticized. Maybe if we had gotten that third season, we would have gotten more great moments with her. I do love some of the stuff the Archie comics did with her, like when she finally got fully de-roboticized, she felt sad because she realized her robot half was something she thought made her special, but Antoine comforted her saying that she was still special to him. Also, Antoine didn't die, he was just put in a coma, though sadly we never saw how it got resolved since this happened shortly before the series had to be rebooted.
Amy I'm glad she's been improving as a character and being featured in more games including the classic ones. Since you mentioned the Sonic X dub doing a disservice to her, I have to agree. One thing that bugs me that the dub removed as it added to her character was that she had a dream of having her own restaurant, and the last episode of season 2 (or second half of series 1 as it originally was) had a scene showing she finally started one. It also made Ella giving Amy her recipes as a parting gift more meaningful. I think Amy started becoming more interesting in Sonic Boom where she was given new personality traits such as loving to read, cooking (as shown in Chez Amy, and feels like an unintentional callback to what I mentioned in Sonic X) and playing Fuzzy Puppy Buddies. It was also interesting how her crush on Sonic was kept secret this time, so it wasn't her main personality trait.
Tikal, I regret the fact that I usually tend to forget about her since she was only in Sonic Adventure aside from a few minor appearances in other games. With how strongly written her story is, she's definitely underrated.
YES! I'm so happy to see Sonia getting some love here. Usually, anytime I see someone say anything about Sonic Underground on TH-cam, they're usually hating on it or don't want to talk about it because they find it dull, but I disagree with them. Sonic Underground may have had nothing to do with the games other than Sonic, Knuckles, Angel Island, and Dr. Robotnik; but for what it was, I never thought it was a bad show. I'm definitely with you on Sonia; even though she has the female stereotype of hating dirt or getting her hair messed up, that doesn't stop her from being a strong female character, and she did complain about those things less as the series went on.
Rouge, I loved her during the Adventure era. One of my favorite things about her were her interactions with Knuckles, especially in Sonic X when she would tease him and get him angry. Those two were a hilarious duo. I'm glad she's finally having major roles again with Sonic Prime and the IDW comics.
Sally was a great leader. I loved her relationship with Sonic in both the Archie comics and SatAM. I never found her overly bossy. There was that one time in the Archie comics where she slapped Sonic, and while it was wrong, I don't hold it against her because she was going through PTSD at the time since Sonic had been stuck in space for a year and she thought he had died without her ever getting to share her true feelings with him up until they were reunited, then after seeing him get injured by Eggman's daughter, Mecha, this caused her major anxiety. While she's a strong leader, I like how this scene shows a weak side to her because realistically, people who have been through trauma do tend to act before they think. I've seen Amy in the IDW comics and Rouge in Sonic Prime being compared to Sally because of their roles in leadership, and I like this because it feels like her legacy still lives on.
I'm hoping you do a second part since I am interested to hear your thoughts on the other major female characters, especially Blaze and Cream.

Hi okay wow, I did not expect this video to do as well as it is doing. I literally made this video expecting my 12 friends subscribed to my YT channel to see it and now it’s at over 7k views.
That being said, this video was scripted in a way that will change in future videos I have planned. In the future the videos will have a better written script and probably be a little more serious sounding haha.
I really appreciate all the feedback and conversations going on in the comments! My goal is to keep uploading videos on fridays on a variety of video games (my main focus) , books, TV, movies, etc.
Thanks again for all the love on this video, I’ve already recorded and edited my next two videos and I promise they will be better than this one haha. For anyone curious, the next two videos will be titled: “What Sonic Adventure 2 did right”, and “Spiritfarer: The most heartbreaking game everyone should play”.
I have a lot of things I want to cover on this YT channel so I’m excited to explore a ton of different media :))

Space Channel 5, Sakura Wars, Virtua Fighter, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Valkyria Chronicles, Kunoichi/Night Shade, despite the series name, Wonder Boy with Asha, if you wanna believe it Crazy Taxi etc. Sonic of course is filled with em, not a girl in this series i don't think is cool even as a guy and ever since i was a kid. While Amy is my favorite here, I have quite a different view on which portrayals are the best. For instance, you liked IDW the most - while IDW was closer to "eh" for me due to the writers never showing how she got to that mature leader that she became. Sure you could point at Forces and say "well it happened in da war!" but then you could make that argument for any character change (which would be lazy - something I dislike in writing). I have more, but I'd rather not flood the video with comments about things I disagree on in an= (much needed) appreciation video

i think out of all characters in this video amy is my favorite. i think the coolest thing about amy was her arc in sonic adventure 1. since she had to learn to be strong instead of just being strong out the gate like sonic or knuckles. at the start of SA1 she wanted to save the flicky but she was dependent on sonic to fix all her problems that her first intinct was to go to sonic and ask him to be the flicky's body guard. By the end of the story amy learns that sonic can't be around to save her all the time and that she has to do things on her own.

Will you be reading the Shogakukan Sonic manga? It's a gem - AND it's the origin of Amy Rose (and Charmy Bee lol). There are a lot of traits from there that she takes on in the games, but Sonic Team doesn't always utilize them. They did in Adventure 1 for sure (unironically my favorite version of her - and my favorite SA1 story- and gameplay, despite what people say. After all, you get the biggest rush when you're running away from something, especially when you're at a disadvantage. )

  • @smoldoritochild4136

Slight thing to point out, Amy on that comic cover was not crying for Sonic and Sally getting married, it was for Bunnie and Antoine's wedding. Amy in the 30 years later comic, according to Flynn confirmed that she was "Adventuring through time via Time Stones, being awesome." which basically was a way of removing her without breaking the rules
Also think we can get Cosmo and Elise in one of these? Cosmo is one of my favourite characters and I think Elise deserves more credit.
Cosmo lost her entire clan and was traumatized with survivors guilt but despite this, she was still very sweet and kind and never restored to violence because she didn't want anymore suffering but knew when it was needed. She proved herself useful so many times like sensing the planet eggs and translating the Metarex language. Heck, she even faces up to Dark oak/her father despite having no powers herself. In the end she sacrifices herself to save the universe which was a very brave thing of her to do.
As for Elise, she is so misunderstood. Poor girl was forced to never cry no matter what or else she would unleash a powerful monster that would destroy the world. Sonic was her first friend and made her feel like a person when everyone else saw her as royalty. Due to getting kidnapped over and over again and then seeing her first friend get killed right in frount of her, it all became too much for her and she broke down. At the end, when she is hesitant to blow out the flame, it's because she doesn't want to forget her only friend but after a pep talk from Sonic, she does

Irrelevant but I love Sally Acorn in SatAM, she's perfect...
And DESPISE her in Archie, he's horrid, she's made it into my personal Top 5 most hated Sonic characters list. She's inconsistency incarnate, shallow as hell (especially after the Endgame arc), a messy backstory and A COMOLETE a-hole. I've been reading Archie for the first time this year (spin-offs and crossovers included) and I'm at issue 138 right now (also already done with the Sonic X comics by Archie). Sally is quite honestly dreadful here, she's borderline unbearable every time she's on page, I can't say enough bad things about Archie Sally. And I've made this lil' list with my friends of every time she's kissed, flirted or tried to seduce other men while she's WITH Sonic and we've reached double digit numbers at this point, it's ridiculous. But OH NO, Mina kisses Sonic (Mina > Sally in every conceivable way btw) and he is VISIBLY disapproving of the action and Sally acts like a COMPLETE B**** for what felt like a million issues because of her own assumptions. She learns the truth, Mina almost gets shot and SHE DOESN'T EVEN APOLOGIZE. God I hate Archie Sally, I hate her so f***ing much.

THANKYOU. As a guy I really do appreciate female characters in fiction that aren't forced to choose between embracing their Femininity and becoming/being Strong. I think there has been too much of an overcorrection in Western media lately that looks at the more stereotypical depictions of women in past media and take away the wrong message. The West (mostly America because Western media is dominated by America) now, too often, equates being Feminine with being Weak. How many recent movies and TV shows have come out in recent years that rework female characters to be strong badass fighters - at the expense of their Femininity? Way, way too many times.
Disney is to blame for ALOT of this because their early depictions of women have historically received ALOT of flak for portraying them as Damsels in Distress, so they overcorrected by turning them into boring Action Heroines with no personality. Rey from Star Wars, Mulan from the remake, Wendy Darling from the Peter Pan remake, pretty much ALL the major Marvel Heroines of recent years. ALL of them sacrifice their Feminity to become strong fighters, because Disney thinks a Woman cannot remain Feminine and be strong. They also think that strength is purely physical, they forget there are other ways to be strong than just through physical strength or fighting ability.
That is why I appreciate Amy and how Sega has handled her, she's been allowed to be strong and to grow, but she never had to sacrifice her Femininity to do it. Women and Men are just different, sorry but that's the truth. Women can be strong without adopting all the stereotypical traits of Men, and Amy is a perfect example of that. She is strong, but she is more defined by her compassion and her courage. That is why I will always say Amy is an excellent Female character - the writers actually take her being Female into account and don't treat it like it's something holding her back.

Well the reason Sonia acts the most like a girl us because she was raised by rich people, while Sonic and Manic were raised by thieves and poor people.

Honestly, and idk how, but the Sonic franchise legit has some of the best written female characters. Granted there was that time period where Amy's personality was obssessive and crude to anyone who isnt Sonic. That was just awful....
But other than that. Nah. We've got women geniuses, treasure hunters, rulers, warriors, and heroines.
