Sega as a whole needs to step up its writing game, go back to at least Adventure/Adventure 2 levels of writing. Their stories may not have held up the greatest, but it can't be denied they got characterization pretty spot on for everyone.
Honestly Sonic was best written in the "dark age" games he had his ego sure but he was just a generally nice guy that helped people out just because he wanted to. In Sonic and the black night he even says he doesn't mind being seen as a villain if it means he can help people and lives life by his own standards not by others.
That's how I feel ben's sonic is gonna grow into, in the movies considering he's a nice guy in the movies. Albeit more of a hero than a anti hero unlike Jason's sonic.
Textbook definition of a hero right here: Saves people with good intentions and good methods, even if looking like/being called a villain in the process.
m.th-cam.com/video/SY3FDdxouPI/w-d-xo.html Seriously, Sonic ‘06, contrary to popular opinion (well, at least by late 2000s - 2010s standards), while it could have been a lot better had it had a lot more Polish in terms of the in-game segments and Team Sonic’s story, could’ve also been a lot worse because there is a great game inside it thanks to Team Dark, Silver the Hedgehog and their stories alongside the last story of the game which come to think of it, is reminiscent to those in the (half-)epic Adventure games (I mainly say I love them because of the DreamCast games. But because of the updated 2003-2010 versions, I would add “half”) and this comes from a game with strong stories from its respective characters (or teams of characters in SA2)

I think that most of Silver's hate comes from his boss fight.
The funny thing about that is people instantly gravitate towards when you first fight him with Sonic, despite that the battle where you fight him as Shadow was even worse. 😂
Props for including Emerl, but you probably should've added his return as Gemerl in Sonic Advance 3 into that section since he's pretty much Emerl's remains repurposed by Eggman and turned against Sonic and his friends, only to turn on Eggman thanks to the ol Gizoid in him still. Thankfully Sonic manages to SAVE him this time and now he lives happily with Cream and Vanilla. Also acknowledging that Silver is good does my soul good since he's my favorite hedgehog.
I love the fact that you went with the Natewantstobattle cover of “Fist-Bump” in the transitions. I personally find it better than the original (it’s just my opinion, though).
It’s a fact. Even haters of Sonic Forces happen to like at least a few songs in the OST, but honestly, I think Fist Bump is far from the only song in the franchise that makes the soundtrack overproduced even though the game itself is so bad because it’s surprisingly underproduced (and don’t even get me started on Tails in this game!).
I'd nominate Cream, but I feel like her character and actions are too at odds. I like the idea of her as an unexplored fledgling prodigy inspired by Tails' work, but she's either written to innocently or vastly underestimated by both the writers and the other characters. She was mechanically overpowered in Advance 2 and Chronicles, yes, but her greatest moment was in Free Riders. Amy basically kidnapped Cream and forced her to participate in the tournament with less than 15 minutes to go before the opening ceremony, and Amy did not bring any Extreme Gear with her. And to top that off, she hired Vector to fill the third slot, someone who either can't or won't ride skateboard style, requiring a bike-type like Eggman. With the other three flying types, Tails, Rouge, and Wave being the gear designers, it fell to Cream to make up for Amy's deficit. And she not only pulled it off, but excelled in such a way that even Tails of all people was impressed. Let me put this in perspective. This six year old girl, IN LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES, built not one, not two, but THREE extreme gears that outperformed a government intelligence unit (Rouge), a certified Extreme Gear specialist (Wave), and MILES FREAKING PROWER OF ALL PEOPLE (Tails). Think about all the distractors she would've had to deal with. The fanfare from the crowd, the mounting pressure and stress, Amy and Vector just not shutting the heck up, and all this on top of the limited resources at her disposal. And she still SINGLE HANDEDLY carried Team Rose. If not for her, Amy wouldn't have even QUALIFIED, much less made it to the finals. But despite that, it feels like both the games and the comics want to go in this "non-violent little kid who loves her mom" direction, and I feel like it's a waste of a perfectly good setup. I didn't even talk about her potential connection to the chao, which is a huge deal considering how Adventure went. That, coupled with her aforementioned genius, is a recipe for greatness, but the writers may not have even realized what they've created. For all I know, it could've been a freak accident.
I agree but sega of JP hit that reset button and cream is back to where she should be as a character... God it's irritating how afraid of change that company is...
@@Tedus987 It doesn't help when dumbass hack journos and "gamers" like Egoraptor and co. keep saying everything Sonic does is bad, partially because they just suck as the games.
Idris Elba was surprisingly great as Knuckles. Loved what he brought to him and made him very cool! Hoping Shadow and Eggman are both fairly high up :)
Damn, I was thinking if anyone was gonna show Pollock this video but if that's the case then that's probably not a good idea since he hates the idea of people using his roles with his other roles.
Finally, a Sonic video that appreciates Silver and his character despite his flaws. Just because a character is in a bad game, but that doesn't make them a bad character.
Yeah the same applies to the villain of 06, Mephelis is in my opinion the best Sonic villain, he's intimidating, he's manipulative, he's ruthless, and he's the only villain in the series to ACTUALLY KILL SONIC.
I recently replayed the Adventure games, having not played them since childhood, and I was actually shocked at how intimidating his "mincemeat" comment to Tails in SA1 was! I think it beats out his threat to kill Amy in the Crazy Gadget level of SA2.
@@kintallo5617 what I like about SA1's Eggman is the fact that he has a different portrayal based on which characters you are. For Sonic and Knuckles, he's an evil goon that serves as an annoyance (see Sonic's comments and actions after the Gamma encounter for Evidence of that), and for Tails and Amy he's an intimidating and stone cold villain who will do anything to achieve his goal, proof is that mincemeat line
I played through Sonic '06 only once... and Silver's campaign was actually my favorite, with Sonic's being the worst (those mach speed sections can burn at Flame Core for all I care).
Another positive for 06 is Mephiles the Dark not only voiced by Dan Green but he plays the role of a scheming and sneaky villain well plus he is the only Sonic villain to kill Sonic
Shadow's arc in adventure 2 was probably the best. He knew when to take things seriously and when to slow down and really think about what he was doing
Emerl is one of my favourite Sonic characters too! I was so bummed when they made him a boring silent robot in Sonic X (but then again, I pretty much think most of the game cast was done dirty in that show!) I want to see Gemerl in a future Sonic title, I just think he has a lot of potential as a customizable hero.
OK I figured I'd mention this but Shadow and Blaze aren't edgelords, you see an Edgelord's traits are as such, trying to be edgy, nihilism, being unnecessarily stoic aloof, or cold, and having a dark past (actual or fabricated.) none of which are Blaze and very few are Shadow, Figured I'd mention it.
My favorite characters are Infinite, Blaze, Silver, Shadow, Tails, Sonic and Knuckles. For IDW Whisper, Tangle, Kit and Surge. Please be respectful of my opinion because I already got hate for liking Infinite from some Sonic fans and I was told I was not allowed to like the character. I just ignore them because I don't care what they say.
@@SmokeTheHorsehog So I have to take an L for liking Infinite ok. People could not like Infinite but I like him. I don't care what people say that is my opinion.
Oh come now Joker... The Sonic X show was alright. One thing that it does show is the many worlds that is in the Galaxy, the Seedrians being one of them.
"Just because 06 is a bad game, doesn't mean Silver's a bad character" THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!! Silver's been my favorite Sonic character for over a decade, and I am SICK of people hating on him just cuz he debuted in 06 (and cuz of Sonic Team's refusal to use him, his image will forever been tied down to 06....unless you played the Rivals games which are really obscure)! He's basically become just a meme to so many people, which SUCKS, cuz he's such a good character!! "BLEGHHHHH WHY DID HE TRUST MEPHILES, WHEN HE WAS OBVIOUSLY REALLY SUS" Um, if you lived your whole life surrounded by destruction, would you know the difference between sus and normal? No! And of course, if he was offered an opportunity to save the world, he WOULD take it! He WOULD risk everything for a brighter future! He's such a brave, heroic guy! And there's also this one detail that a LOT of people seem to ignore.... Silver is FOURTEEN YEARS OLD. He is YOUNGER than Sonic, and he takes on such big responsibilities! He still has a teenager's naivete, but living in Crisis City has matured him enough to the point where you barely notice sometimes! He doesn't joke around, he doesn't get distracted, he just...knows his mission, and doesn't let anything stand in his way. I think that's really admirable. Another thing I personally really like is that he's on the socially-awkward side! Relatable as heck! And also understandable, given, again, how he's had to live. He doesn't have any friends besides Blaze, and probably barely ever had a casual conversation with anyone when his whole life has been constant fighting with no breaks. So, when Amy shows up, the poor kid's just like "????? What do I do???" and it's honestly pretty adorable. Add on to this that he has the coolest powers in all of Sonic (seriously, he is SO POWERFUL and I'd LOVE to be able to play as him in 06 style again on a better, more polished game), and yeah, I flipping love this guy and I'm tired of people slandering him. While good future!Silver might not be as interesting on paper as 06!Silver, I still really wish he'd show up again. He has so much potential....I heard he showed up in Forces? Never played that. But I wanna see him PLAYABLE again. I know that'll never happen tho, as long as the games are trying to cut down on characters and focus on only Sonic. (And also, his current voice is a lot better than his 06 voice, so yeah, people can't even use THAT excuse anymore!) Sorry for rambling. This video just made me really happy....^^;
We believe in Blaze supremacy. Now if only Sega remembered that she's capable of being more than just another supporting character... Or at least figure out if she's from another dimension or the future.
Everytime you say along the lines "I wish this character was portrayed better" I'm just aggressively waving my copies of late pre reboot/post archie and IDW Books in being the most consistiently good character game portrayals.
Yeah, no. IDW is milquetoast. Amy was a leader in that comic despite having no military experience or tactical knowhow. Tails still cowers at the Zombots in Issue #29. We don't talk about Shadow... Eggman being unconcerned about the Metal Virus when it starts mutating is OOC for him. Blaze is just a Deus Ex Machina for getting Sonic's memory back. Based on the latest issues, the OCs are getting more attention.
@@sonicstar917 Sega and Sonic forces forced these changes to happen. IDW is just building off the rubble I to something decent. That Shadow moment we all know about was a forced change by Sega themselves. Tbh looking at Eggman from even the good story arcs is kinda in character for him. Unless we're going by the Sonic Fleetway comic continuity because Jesus fuck he Mega evil the most brutal the most efficient the most calculating one. Committed a whole ass genocide just because their were rumors of him becoming soft, outside of his sphere of influence. Really I have no defense for Blaze right now sense we only seen her once Character development is needed to make shit more interesting. The villians side arc was great especially seeing Zavaock written pretty good.
@@sonicstar917 This is meant to be a different take on Amy, and given that, up to this point, she'd been portrayed as obsessive over Sonic, seeing her be more take charge while still being infatuated with Sonic is a welcome change. Also, I would think given what happened in Forces, all of the characters would be forced to change. As for Tails... Let's be real, here, the Zombot outbreak was a LITERAL APOCALYPSE WHERE ONE TOUCH WOULD TURN YOU INTO ONE OF THE INFECTED METAL HORDE. I think he can be forgiven for being scared in that instance. And he still managed to get out of there. Given that Archie Eggman REBOOTED THE UNIVERSE AND SHATTERED IT, this Eggman being unconcerned about something mutating beyond his control isn't unbelievable. I mean, he's a MAD scientist. The MAD in the title has to come from somewhere. Shadow... Okay, you have a point with him being reckless, but he seems to be getting better. Only time will tell. As for Blaze, I think you're making a mountain of a molehill, dude. Calm down.
Here’s my top 10 favorite Sonic Characters: 10: Dr.Eggman 9: Miles “Tails” Prower 8: Vector the Crocodile 7: Amy Rose 6: Rouge the Bat 5: a tie between Sonic & Knuckles 4: Blaze the Cat 3: Silver the Hedgehog 2: Espio the Chameleon 1: Shadow the Hedgehog
Old Shadow or post Sonic Forces Shadow? Not a fan of him post Sonic Forces and the IDW Comic team even complain about how they can't make him how he was before with the new mandates.
My personal list is 10. Silver 9. Blaze 8. Knuckles ( game version) 7. Tails 6. Metal Sonic 5. Dr Robotnik or Eggman if you prefer 4. Knuckles ( movie version) 3. Mephelis the Dark 2. Sonic the Hedgehog 1. Shadow ( Adventure 2, Heroes, and Sonic 06 versions only)
My favourite: Silver. I AM SO GLAD HE'S HERE! Silver is just appealing to me because even if he's only ever used as a side character now, he still has a likable personality, respectable flaws and a tragic backstory that can never be solved. Live in dystopia future, travel back in time, "Fix" the future, find it still in shambles, rince and repeat till solution is found.
It's still insulting Sega had the nerve to put them on the front cover of Sonic Forces alongside Sonic and the OC just to bank off the success of Maina. Not only weren't they playable (unlike Maina) but Forces retroactively stupefied both of them while insulting any REAL fans of those characters with Tails regressing to his dependency complex on Sonic, being a defenceless coward and mostly serving as a exposition machine while Knuckles is still an incompetent imbecile that got many people killed in operation Big-Wave, left the Master Emerald out in open on Angel Island (unguarded) and apparently forgot his role as guardian. Props to Paramount for actually understanding these characters.
It was an anime, It just wasn't shōnen unless you're using the absolute most broad definition of shōnen that being "An anime targeted at young people".
To this day, I still wonder how Sonic X would've handled games like Rush, 06, and Unleashed. Many people don't like him, but seeing Chris interact with characters like Blaze, Sliver, or even Chip and the Werehog would've been a little endearing.
"Eggman has no tragic backstory" Considering how he admires his grandfather, I think he has some level of it, not big or anything like that, but its still there and, IMO, it makes him better.
27:28 Well considering Mike Polick also voiced Dr Hell in Mazinger Z Infinity I guess he was just reflecting on his past roll? Or just funny outtake, you make the call.
And Silver isn't the only character to share a voice actor with a Kingdom Hearts character. As of Free Riders and Colours, respectively, Shadow and Orbot are both currently voiced by Kirk Thornton; the voice of Isa/Saïx. From Free Riders to Forces, Knuckles was voiced by Travis Willingham, the voice of Aced. And as of Forces, Espio is currently voiced by Matt Mercer, the voice of Ira.
I've always had a soft spot for Tails because he was my favorite as a kid and his story in Sonic Adventure was one of the first real contacts I had with him, which was a really good first impression. It does suck that he got hit with a lot of inconsistent characterization though, but I'll always love the little guy. His portrayal in the IDW comics that I read was really good too and reignited my love for the character too. Emerl is also a character I like a lot and I'm sad he doesn't get to make other appearances. His story arc in Sonic X was the first time I saw him and that's pretty much the only part of Sonic X that I can still recall pretty well, mostly how they handled his death. He's been basically replaced by Gemerl who I also do like, but he hasn't really appeared since Advance 3 and his personality is kinda up in the air as a result. I wasn't as much of a fan of how IDW portrayed him either, with him basically being Cream's bodyguard more than anything. It makes sense but I really wish he had more of a bond with the other characters too. I dunno, there's a lot of underutilized potential there for me.
Honestly, one of the most heartbreaking parts in the Metal Virus Saga is after Cream and Gemerl defeat Zeena and Cream reveals she got infected. Despite being scared, she tells Gemerl to go back to the others. Instead, Gemerl chooses to toss the Chaos Emerald back into the portal, pick up Cream and take off, saying 'I will stay with you until... Until you are well.' I know things get resolved in the end, but that scene still tugs on my heartstrings something fierce.
Who had the worst flanderization? It's unquestionably Amy, who has been my favorite Sonic character for years. Writers for Sonic in almost ANY media mistakenly keep believing that her crush on Sonic should be her most prominent trait, and this bleeds over into almost every interpretation of her from the games to the cartoons to the comics. All of these medias have plenty of moments showing off the best parts of Amy beyond just her crush, but it honestly feels like the writers ignore them on purpose sometimes. Even Sonic X had a huge problem with this when it was dubbed. In the Japanese version, Amy had dreams of opening her own restaurant, she got a job at a café, and even had her own apartment in Station Square that she became attached to that made going home harder for her, showing that at least one person out there had the right idea. But then the English dub removed ALL of this content to essentially boil her down to "ha ha angry crush ha ha". It pisses me off that Amy is consistently stuck with writers who don't care about her enough to truly let her be the character she honestly deserves to be. It is NOT that hard to make a crush a background piece of someone's character, especially in the case of characters like Amy who have plenty of other material to potentially work with if they just tried. She's kind, determined, fiery, and badass and doesn't need all of those traits to also get meshed with her crush. It also sucks because it's been proven that Sonic team can write good female characters when they actually give enough of a shit to try or would at least be willing to break a status quo, which while easier said than done in most cases, needs to happen sometimes. I'll defend Amy for years to come because she's been getting the short end of the writing stick even before Sonic team started throwing all of their supporting characters into an incinerator, and she's actually a great character when you break down the moments she has when the writers wise up for her development. The issue is she needs better writing and someone willing to take a risk, and I unfortunately have a feeling I might as well be wishing for a million dollars while I'm at it.
@@TF2Fan101 I haven't read every issue and the comics are unquestionably the least offender of them all when it comes to this subject, but from what I have seen, it's still there at times. Even if not as egregiously as all the other Sonic medias.
th-cam.com/video/tTLxGVEGO78/w-d-xo.html I’m not going to lie after watching this video, the Sonic character I identify the most with is Amy Rose. She definitely deserves way more than what she gets currently.
4:10 Thankfully the comics gave Silver a much better personality and great story arcs. 16:31 You think Knuckles' recovery is broken? Cream's is straight-up GOD TIER.
IMO, E-123 Omega is *criminally* underrated. He admittedly started off as kind of bland (But his design and abilities more than made up for it) but later material (Including the comics) added a LOT more humor to his character. And they're able to make him one of the coolest characters in the comics. And he's also known as a 'Walking Arsenal', a nickname he FULLY lives up to!
13:13 WHAT TH-?! Wait... one second... *gets a mouthful of water and does a spit-take* WHAT THE F-?! You were one of the last people I expected to use footage from Bottom! Send my one thousand Thank You's to the editor that included that clip!
Blaze is definitely one of my favorites as well as Maria Robotnik. And of course Cosmo the seedrian! Oh and Amy. And Cream. And Rouge. And Shadow the hedgehog.
I really loved this countdown and I am suuuuper happy to see Emerl be included as well. I've always loved his character so to see him in the list made my day
The fact Sega allowed two of the most iconic and popular characters in the entire franchise (who are essentially Sonic's bros) to be treated as useless for so long in the core games (especially the 3D ones) is pretty telling tbh...
3:53 Silver has actually slowly grown a fandom and become pretty popular within the fandom, so I don’t think you’ll really see much backlash to this pick outside of people who keep repeating “a rough transition into 3D.”
Shadow and Sonic being back to back is fitting, Shadow is what would have happened to Sonic if he didn't have his friends. If you replaced Shadow's amnesia to him just being a loner it would track.
I would like to bring up the fact that silver's story has been used to great potential in the IDW Comics, Talking about the ramifications of the fact that while he saved the future, His home is now literally erased and now he is a time hobo Meanwhile, Everybody vaguely remembers the events of 06 like it was a bad fever dream, with barely any recognition and when they try it makes their head hurty. Silver, Despite literally being an after thought to the main cast, Still actively chooses to help them.
Interesting line up, very surprised and off guard where you put Sonic, very interesting where you put Shadow (especially for his parallel coloring to yours), and surprising you didn't include Amy (not even in honored mentions)
This is a cool list! I always love a list that is honest and not just sharing the same old opinions about the Sonic characters. Here's mine. Honorable Mentions: Big the Cat, Chaos, Shara, Merlina, E102 Gamma, Emerl, Gemerl, Avatar and Yacker 10) Rouge the Bat 9) Silver the Hedgehog 8) Princess Blaze the Cat 7) Shadow the Hedgehog 6) A tie between Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic 5) Sticks the Badger 4) Maria Robotnik 3) Princess Tikal 2) Chip 1) a tie between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Cream
Oh my gosh, someone else exists that likes Silver!!! Thank you!!!!!!! A little sad to not see Omega on this list though. He's fantastic in everything he's in, especially in '06! He went through so many lengths to save Shadow, and it was really sweet. He's also hilarious in the comics.
Concerning Shadow, I felt his 2005 game started the whole trend of being an edge lord. There's far more to this guy than just being stereotypically broody and being a rival character to Sonic, but his solo title took all of that up to 11. I'm not certain Shadow has ever been able to recover from this portrayal.
Knuckles in Sonic Adventure wasn't really tricked by Eggman, Eggman planted a seed of doubt but Knuckles didn't go hunt Sonic Down, he simply saw that Sonic had an Emerald and jumped to conclusions, should be noted that in that game Sonic and Knuckles are still far from friends even if they aren't enemies.
If memory serves, in Knuckles' recap of that part of the game he states that after his first confrontation with Eggman he was going to go talk to Sonic and get his side of things. Obviously that didn't happen as he saw Sonic with an Emerald and immediately assumed it was a Master Emerald shard.
Now that I think about it, it is astounding how Sonic Adventure 2 does give Eggman every motivation to seek vengeance, like Shadow, for the loss of his family members, and yet Ivo brushes that completely aside for his simple minded, metaphorically speaking, goal he's always had?
You know, if you ever do a Mario version of this you could recite the entry for Eggman verbatim but just substitute Bowser and it would still make perfect sense!
@@joshuasgameplays9850 yeah and to be honest, while Bowser is a good villain, he's outclassed by several other villains, especially King Boo in my opinion
the most intimidating moment for eggman has to be in sonic adventure 2 on the ark. just... pointing a gun right at amy, outsmarting tails, and nearly killing sonic.
Actually , if you read the IDW comics you'll see that Metal Sonic got his arrogance and egotism from Robotnik. His creator gave him his biggest strengths AND weaknesses. I guess Robotnik really is an artist of robotics , he really expressed himself with that one.
In all honesty, Mephiles the Dark is actually a really good villain. and I'll be honest, he's one of the GOOD things in Sonic 06. He has a decent backstory, he has a intimidating voice, he's manipulative and enjoys people suffering. Plus, the music. THE GOD DAMN MUSIC. When you hear his music, it sends shivers down your spine. Plus he's done what no other Sonic villain has done. Actually kill Sonic. To me, Mephiles the Dark is a very underrated villain and deserves more attention and dare I say, needs a reboot for his return.
I found him kind of boring. He felt just generic evil with an overly complicated plan. Also, Sonic was more or less mostly dead after being blasted through. Don’t know if that counts
@@joegreen3802 he wasn't meant to be a sympathetic character, his evilness is what makes him a great villain and to be honest a Pure Evil villain is kinda refreshing nowadays, also Mephelis's plan was complex due to a key part of his character his sadistic side, he ENJOYS the suffering of others and he wants to cause others to suffer as much as possible, he doesn't care if he complicates things as long as he's enjoying himself.
thank you for giving Shadow a good name. seriously, it's not his fault he got so flanderized by the writing into nothing but Edgy the Hedgy. he's my favorite sonic character for a reason.
Blaze is going to be #1. I think we all know that. I'm thinking Gamma and possibly Omega are going to show up too. Edit: Alright I gotta admit I was not expecting that, but considering I tend to see a lot of fans downplay Eggman's greatness I was pretty happy to see him at #1. Seriously Eggman is underrated in the fact that a lot of people downplay his importance to the empire. I'm glad to see him get the praise he deserves. I don't agree with the list completely, but I can't say I'm mad, because you do a good job explaining it and gave characters I really like the spotlight. My personal top 10 are: 1. Sonic 2. Shadow 3. Tails 4. Knuckles 5. Eggman 6. Blaze 7. Metal Sonic 8. Gamma 9.Omega 10. Vector.
It's hard to say what is my favorite for the sonic series it's pretty in consistent but I'm all for acknowledging the good like gamma & blaze plus a great villain always helps a story then breaks
Some of my favorite sonic characters are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Gamma, Omega, Team Chaotix, Silver, and Eggman. 10. Knuckles is to Sonic as Piccolo is to Goku. I still love Knuckles and I did love this portrayal in Sonic 2. It did help to reinvigorate my adoration for the knucklehead. His portrayal in both the Archie and IDW comics is still fine, even though he had a case of the comic creator's favorite child in the former. Boom Knuckles in the tv show is still funny. 9. I do hope that Silver gets the recognition he deserves. It didn't help that his debut appearance was Sonic 06. My favorite version of SIlver is in the IDW comics. 8. Still one of my favorite versions of the evil doppelganger trope. I hope that he shows up more in both games and maybe in the live-action movies. His role in Sonic Heroes is still amazing. 7. Sonic's best written moments have to be during the "dark age" games with Sonic Unleashed and Black Knight being my favorites. I hope that Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Prime help out the blue blur in some way. 6. I still enjoyed Shadow and his character development. I still believe that his titular game did help flesh Shadow out regardless of what people say about that game. It kinda sucks that he became a discount Vegeta nowadays. I can't wait for the third movie. If you know, you know. 5. Tails had one of the best character arcs in the adventure games and I loved him in the Sonic 2 movie. 4. Haven't played Sonic Battle, but I heard great things about Emerl. Sad to see him go, but he is at least still remembered in IDW as Gemerl. 3. I was wondering when Gamma would show up. Still, one of the best storylines to come out of Sonic. I still love his successor, Omega, especially in the comics. 2. How ironic that this cool cat who was initially cold has flame powers. Blaze is a fantastic character and I hope to see more of her in future appearances. 1. He is Eggman, that's what he is and he has a master plan. Eggman is one of my favorite villains and I love all of his different portrayals. People were unsure when Jim Carrey was cast to play Eggman, but he knocked it out of the park in both movies with his performance. It sucks that he is basically retiring from acting for the time being. I know he may come back, but it will be weird if he doesn't return for Sonic 3. Though it may provide a chance for Agent Stone to step up as a potential successor for Eggman as he works alongside (name withheld due to spoilers).
Shadow better be judged by SA2B only. His arc is amazing and he isn't edgy at all. Even his name has meaning after rereading the story. Rouge the bat is great in a lot of he appearances too. Omega and emul for robots I love them a ton. Original knuckles Sonic heroes metal sonic. I just love that one a lot who planned out a ton for data and metal madness theme. Eggmans Grandpa should be on here for being a man driven to madness for what happened to Maria. Blaze and silver are cool but.......06
@@yamakingz2 no he hasn't been. Read SA2B and see why he is the way he is and how shadow is not edgy it's greatness with Maria. Or you are a teenager who only plays games after 06.
@@ivanbluecool he was kinda in SA2, you know ‘destroy the whole world in revenge for his loved ones’ kind of edgy. Sure he wasn’t running around with guns searching for that DAMN fourth chaos emerald (and did get over the edginess by the ending), but you don’t almost obliterate a planet without being a little edgy
Out of the game cast my faves are probably something along the lines of Silver, Rouge, Chip, Metal Sonic, Knuckles, Amy, Tails, Sonic, Shadow, Eggman, subject to change
I think with Shadow Genaration, Shadow went up cause we actually see him show a little more emotion beside brooding. He gets the closer he desperately needed
Consider me one of Big the Cat's 2 fans (that aren't comic). Honourable mentions for non-video game Sonic characters: Whisper the Wolf from IDW Publishing's Sonic the Hedgehog: compelling tragic backstory and a jovial twist on the lone wolf. Bunnie Rabbot from Sonic SatAM and Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog: regular sweetheart with metal muscle to boot. Helen from Sonic X: everything Chris Thorndyke *should've* been.
I couldn't have picked a better choice for number one no matter what form of media; movies, comics, games, or shows Dr. Eggman/Robotnik is always great to have around he brings so much life and energy with him when he shows up.
oh silver’s on this list??? *smiles like a giddy child* i’m in the minority but silver’s voice didn’t annoy me in 06 even though i prefer Quinton Flynn VA of Silver omg yes we can all agree shadow’s best characterization is in SA2, Battle, and 06
A surprisingly good video! Nice to see Sonic characters get their due. Funnily enough Josh didn't touch upon the inconsistencies regarding Blaze's story again (i.e. Her encouraging Silver to murder Sonic in '06). I actually have a theory about that.
@@BuzzRighteous That is a mere theory with nothing backing it up. As far as canon is concerned, they are different characters. The only problem is a cutscene that implies 06 Blaze at least knows of Sonic, in which case she shouldn't be passively allowing Silver to continue trying to kill him.
@@espurrseyes42 I did say in my original comment that it was a theory. I could be wrong, but I feel that if you consider that 06 happened BEFORE the events of Rush, it would make a bit more sense. Lemme break it down: So, Blaze was featured in 06 and doesn't seem to know Sonic at all (the moment where she said "Blue hedgehog..." could be less seen as remembering him and more like pure curiosity), and she appears to let Silver go and kill Sonic, which flies in the face of Sonic Rush's story, so yes, the idea that they are two different versions of the same character could work. But I find it more fun to think that Blaze, after being sent to a different dimension upon sealing the flames of Iblis within herself, was reborn in that dimension and written out of Sonic's timeline altogether until Rush happened. And this is even after Sonic had Elise extinguish the flame of Solaris at the very end. Please note that she used two of the Chaos Emeralds, gems that manipulate time and space, to seal one-half of a time God within herself. This combined with her flame powers is sure enough to send her to the Sol Dimension and write her out of Silver's timeline altogether. And also note that during the End of the World final level, someone is oddly missing: Blaze. Why didn't she appear with the other good guys at the end? Because she was in that other dimension, and she would be reborn in that dimension even after Solaris's flame was put out and the events of 06 wiped out almost completely. But then Sonic Rush would happen and Blaze would be reintroduced to Sonic and her friends and the rest is history. Again, this is just a theory. I'm not banking on anyone believing it. But it is a fun way to interpret events. 🙂
@@BuzzRighteous "So, Blaze was featured in 06 and doesn't seem to know Sonic at all (the moment where she said "Blue hedgehog..." could be less seen as remembering him and more like pure curiosity)" Considering Rush, where Blaze debuted, released BEFORE 06, the logical conclusion is that that scene was implying that she has knowledge of him. There's no reason to SPECIFICALLY zoom in on her and have her saying the line the way she did (or at all) if they weren't trying to implying that she knows or knows of Sonic. "after being sent to a different dimension upon sealing the flames of Iblis within herself, was reborn in that dimension and written out of Sonic's timeline altogether until Rush happened." First of all, she didn't die and get reborn. She explicitly says to Silver to seal her in a different dimension before doing things herself. What she did was warp into another world. Second, she'd still remember who Sonic is and what happened that lead to her ending up in this other world, even if the timeline she came from got erased due to Solaris dying. This literally cannot be the same Blaze that was in Rush, as that Blaze would've already known Sonic. "Again, this is just a theory. I'm not banking on anyone believing it. But it is a fun way to interpret events." Good for you. The problem is that you're trying to use your easily debunkable headcanon to justify bad writing and make up what happened in the face of what actually happened. Blaze from Rush and Blaze from 06 are NOT the same person as backed up by the latter presumably knowing Sonic and proven by the former (from a game that released BEFORE 06) not knowing Sonic when she should according to your bogus theory.
I'm so glad that sega is giving the other characters more attention now because back in the 2010s we barely saw them and they were almost completely irrelevant but now with the movies and better writers the other characters are finally getting the attention they deserved for the past couple of years
10. Even "Forces" did him dirty when they didn't mean to. Yeah, Knuckles isn't the sharpest tool in the shed but there's a reason why he remains one of Sonic's friends despite how many times he's been turned against Sonic. 9. Maybe if his backstory wasn't so obviously channeling Future Trunks from DBZ he would've commanded more attention. I do like his more vulnerable moments when he has them. 8. Like Classic Sonic he's been reduced to cheap nostalgia bait now. Maybe if "Heroes" had done better or been followed up on, Metal would've seen a resurgance in popularity for the "Dark" age? 7. Sonic has undergone some change since the 90's, different eras define him differently. I think the "Dark" age got him best, along with the Adventure games: He lives for adventure, but he'll still be there when you need him most. 6. Really hoping the third movie can do for him what the second movie did for Knuckles. The whole point of his own game was that he put his troubled past behind him, he's just more of a lone wolf. 5. The second movie's interpretation of his character was spot on. *THAT* is the Tails we need to see more of, a Tails that can be the hero if he has to be but doesn't mind stepping back and letting Sonic handle things. 4. Never played the game he was in, but that does sound like a pretty sad story. 3. A robot with a heart may be cliche, but Gamma proves why it's a cliche we keep coming back to. 2. An underrated character in the franchise, and probably the best love interest character for the hedgehog characters. 1. Yeah, he's always been scheming to take over the world. But I kind of miss when he wasn't a complete joke that even Sonic doesn't take seriously. I miss when he could have his moments of stupidity and still be something to be feared.
Here’s my favorites list of Sonic Characters (no particular order or ruleset, just going full chaotic on this) Whisper (she cute and I will die for her), Tails (I’m a sucker for the BEEG brains), Knuckles (Because Knuckles. Also Idris Elba), Robotnik (Jim Carrey is phenomenal, his antics in-game are pretty fun, and Sonic Boom’s interpretation is a real hoot sometimes.)
If you want some real cool Silver moments, the Archie comics and especially the IDW comics are able to give the underrated telepath some wonderful screentime when he shows up. Same with Metal Sonic as he's given a wonderful arc as the starter villain. I think I'm just saying for people to read the IDW Comics, they're pretty good for the most part.
Moral of the story: Sega, please stop pretending that the rest of the Sonic cast doesn’t exist, they have all the potential in the world to be great.
Sega as a whole needs to step up its writing game, go back to at least Adventure/Adventure 2 levels of writing. Their stories may not have held up the greatest, but it can't be denied they got characterization pretty spot on for everyone.
Maybe it's best if they forgot Rouge existed.
Especially the Archie comic characters, Also SilverXBlaze forever!
Sega: But the clasic fans hate them
Except Big the Cat, he had no potential.
Honestly Sonic was best written in the "dark age" games he had his ego sure but he was just a generally nice guy that helped people out just because he wanted to.
In Sonic and the black night he even says he doesn't mind being seen as a villain if it means he can help people and lives life by his own standards not by others.
Being voice by Jason Griffith didn't hurt either.
@@epsyblue7714 Yup he is still my favourite Sonic voice actor with Ben schwartz being second because he is just great in the movies
Honestly I'm not a fan of Sonic's portrayal in the dark age of Sonic.
"Playing as Silver the Hedgehog"
Freaking THANK YOU Josh. That was one of the more entertaining things I like about 06.
m.th-cam.com/video/SY3FDdxouPI/w-d-xo.html
Seriously, Sonic ‘06, contrary to popular opinion (well, at least by late 2000s - 2010s standards), while it could have been a lot better had it had a lot more Polish in terms of the in-game segments and Team Sonic’s story, could’ve also been a lot worse because there is a great game inside it thanks to Team Dark, Silver the Hedgehog and their stories alongside the last story of the game which come to think of it, is reminiscent to those in the (half-)epic Adventure games (I mainly say I love them because of the DreamCast games. But because of the updated 2003-2010 versions, I would add “half”) and this comes from a game with strong stories from its respective characters (or teams of characters in SA2)
I think that most of Silver's hate comes from his boss fight.
The boss fights in '06, to be specific. His fight in Generations is genuinely good.
ITS NO USE!!!
The funny thing about that is people instantly gravitate towards when you first fight him with Sonic, despite that the battle where you fight him as Shadow was even worse. 😂
And the billiards puzzle
(looks back on Game Grumps playthrough) yeah, that has to be it.
Gemerl is a separate character. He did receive the fate Sonic and friends wanted Emerl to have, but he's still not Emerl.
A moment of silence for Emerl, also WE NEED TO HAVE GEMERL GAIN EMERL'S PROGRAMMING AND THEN.. I guess become like a Reborned Emerl?
I’m just glad Emerl’s legacy lives on through Gemerl.
I love the fact that you went with the Natewantstobattle cover of “Fist-Bump” in the transitions. I personally find it better than the original (it’s just my opinion, though).
After I found it I refuse to go back to the original
I heard it before the original version, and I pretty much can't listen to the original.
@@Robbinson98 same thing with me!😁
@@NikFromm Ditto
Also like how Sonix X did the Emerl arc with her too. SHE was the one that ended up winning when Emerl went out of control.
@@DarkFrozenDepths
She and the Ultimate Lifeform: Cheese the Chao.
She's at her best in the new metal virus arc in the comic showing true courage in what is likely the end of the world
I agree but sega of JP hit that reset button and cream is back to where she should be as a character...
God it's irritating how afraid of change that company is...

It doesn't help when dumbass hack journos and "gamers" like Egoraptor and co. keep saying everything Sonic does is bad, partially because they just suck as the games.
Idris Elba was surprisingly great as Knuckles. Loved what he brought to him and made him very cool!
Hoping Shadow and Eggman are both fairly high up :)
Sonic 2 is by far the best characterization of Knuckles we've gotten in ages, Possibly ever.
You are not going to be disappointed. Old Eggman himself is at the very *TOP* of the list, as befitting of the ruler of the Eggman Empire.
Hear me out....
Adam Driver as Shadow the Hedgehog for Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Before anyone asks, that is not actually Eggman swearing at the end. His VA, Mike Pollock, played Adon in Berserk with the same voice.
I couldnt believe it myself when i saw the anime. I’m like hell ya
Actually he swears. Remember the "PINGAS"?
@@ivanacurna6577 That's a dumb meme taken from that Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon where he said "Snooping as usual, I see?"
@@sonicstar917 its still legendary. He even said it in sonic boom.
Damn, I was thinking if anyone was gonna show Pollock this video but if that's the case then that's probably not a good idea since he hates the idea of people using his roles with his other roles.
The idea of Twilight's backstory being the same as Blaze is kinda funny
Finally, a Sonic video that appreciates Silver and his character despite his flaws. Just because a character is in a bad game, but that doesn't make them a bad character.
Kinda reminds me of a video that is aware that Sonic isn’t perfect but should be understood. m.th-cam.com/video/LZZN6bQIIEw/w-d-xo.html
Agreed! I like Silver too but almost everyone but a few people hate him like crazy, or at the least dislike him.
Yeah the same applies to the villain of 06, Mephelis is in my opinion the best Sonic villain, he's intimidating, he's manipulative, he's ruthless, and he's the only villain in the series to ACTUALLY KILL SONIC.
Great video as always Josh 👍🏻
23:08-23:27 Also Blaze’s origin literally being described like Twilight Sparkle is absolutely hilarious.
Josh: "Who had it worst? Tails, or Knuckles"
Me: "Yes"
For some reason, when Josh brought up “evil doppelgänger” in number 8, my mind immediately went to Eggman Nega and I have no idea why.
Simple Eggman Nega is essentially a more unhinged version of Eggman especially in the Rivals games
Deem Bristow also brought the best out of Eggman, making him intimidating as he should be, but keeping him goofy enough to keep him entertaining
Both Deem and Mike. It's to the point that they are both my favorite Eggman voice actors.
NO way! I can’t BELIEVE this!
Get a load of this!
Yeah, Deem Bristow is pretty great. May his memory be a blessing
I played through Sonic '06 only once... and Silver's campaign was actually my favorite, with Sonic's being the worst (those mach speed sections can burn at Flame Core for all I care).
And its greatly fitting music
Another positive for 06 is Mephiles the Dark not only voiced by Dan Green but he plays the role of a scheming and sneaky villain well plus he is the only Sonic villain to kill Sonic
@@blackdemonknight yeah, I really like Mephelis as a villain
4:12
Telepathic? Isn't that communication through one's mind? I think what you're looking for is telekinetic.
Shadow's arc in adventure 2 was probably the best. He knew when to take things seriously and when to slow down and really think about what he was doing
Putting Emerl on this list whereas I’ve almost never seen him on other best Sonic character lists is very much appreciated.
I think Cream is an incredibly underrated Sonic character.
She deserves so much better!
I remember she used to be an overpowered character in basically every single Sonic game she was ever playable in
OK I figured I'd mention this but Shadow and Blaze aren't edgelords, you see an Edgelord's traits are as such, trying to be edgy, nihilism, being unnecessarily stoic aloof, or cold, and having a dark past (actual or fabricated.) none of which are Blaze and very few are Shadow,
Figured I'd mention it.

Ironically enough, part of FiM's cast is voicing the next Sonic Cartoon...
Oh yeah.
Haters gonna hate

Cosmo's death still makes me cry!
"Just because 06 is a bad game, doesn't mean Silver's a bad character"
THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!
Silver's been my favorite Sonic character for over a decade, and I am SICK of people hating on him just cuz he debuted in 06 (and cuz of Sonic Team's refusal to use him, his image will forever been tied down to 06....unless you played the Rivals games which are really obscure)! He's basically become just a meme to so many people, which SUCKS, cuz he's such a good character!!
"BLEGHHHHH WHY DID HE TRUST MEPHILES, WHEN HE WAS OBVIOUSLY REALLY SUS"
Um, if you lived your whole life surrounded by destruction, would you know the difference between sus and normal? No! And of course, if he was offered an opportunity to save the world, he WOULD take it! He WOULD risk everything for a brighter future! He's such a brave, heroic guy!
And there's also this one detail that a LOT of people seem to ignore....
Silver is FOURTEEN YEARS OLD.
He is YOUNGER than Sonic, and he takes on such big responsibilities! He still has a teenager's naivete, but living in Crisis City has matured him enough to the point where you barely notice sometimes! He doesn't joke around, he doesn't get distracted, he just...knows his mission, and doesn't let anything stand in his way. I think that's really admirable.
Another thing I personally really like is that he's on the socially-awkward side! Relatable as heck! And also understandable, given, again, how he's had to live. He doesn't have any friends besides Blaze, and probably barely ever had a casual conversation with anyone when his whole life has been constant fighting with no breaks. So, when Amy shows up, the poor kid's just like "????? What do I do???" and it's honestly pretty adorable.
Add on to this that he has the coolest powers in all of Sonic (seriously, he is SO POWERFUL and I'd LOVE to be able to play as him in 06 style again on a better, more polished game), and yeah, I flipping love this guy and I'm tired of people slandering him.
While good future!Silver might not be as interesting on paper as 06!Silver, I still really wish he'd show up again. He has so much potential....I heard he showed up in Forces? Never played that. But I wanna see him PLAYABLE again. I know that'll never happen tho, as long as the games are trying to cut down on characters and focus on only Sonic.
(And also, his current voice is a lot better than his 06 voice, so yeah, people can't even use THAT excuse anymore!)
Sorry for rambling. This video just made me really happy....^^;
Really I have no defense for Blaze right now sense we only seen her once
Character development is needed to make shit more interesting.
Calm down.

4. Knuckles ( movie version)
3. Mephelis the Dark

I see Blaze as Josh's in the Top Rankings.
Got number 2, easy to see why.
Knuckles had it worse with flanderization, no question. Tails at least has good moments amongst his bad ones. Knuckles never got that luxury.
9:45 ……you may wanna sleep with one eye open from now on Josh…..for more reasons then one.
Josh: "there's so many Characters that it can be a Shounen Anime!"
Me: Sonic X wasnt Anime? sure looked and felt like it to me.
"Eggman has no tragic backstory"
Considering how he admires his grandfather, I think he has some level of it, not big or anything like that, but its still there and, IMO, it makes him better.
27:28 Well considering Mike Polick also voiced Dr Hell in Mazinger Z Infinity I guess he was just reflecting on his past roll? Or just funny outtake, you make the call.
It sounded almost like his role in Berserk
I wonder if Josh knew that, from Generations to Forces, Silver was voiced by Quinton Flynn; the voice of Organization 13’s Axel!
Until you are well.'
I know things get resolved in the end, but that scene still tugs on my heartstrings something fierce.
I like how you say Dark Pit is an example of the Dark Doppelgänger trope done well.
He is
Silver is honestly a really good character.
I take it you haven't read the IDW comics, then?
@@TF2Fan101 I haven't read every issue and the comics are unquestionably the least offender of them all when it comes to this subject, but from what I have seen, it's still there at times. Even if not as egregiously as all the other Sonic medias.
Yeah, I loved her in the Adventure games but outside of it she's been rocky at best.
th-cam.com/video/tTLxGVEGO78/w-d-xo.html
I’m not going to lie after watching this video, the Sonic character I identify the most with is Amy Rose.
She definitely deserves way more than what she gets currently.
Same here my man SAME HERE!!!
24:33 dude just straight up called out half of the Sonic fanbase.
4:10
Thankfully the comics gave Silver a much better personality and great story arcs.
16:31
You think Knuckles' recovery is broken? Cream's is straight-up GOD TIER.
Proud to be one of the only two Big the Cat fans.
Count how many sand is here Omega, that's your first mission.
13:13 WHAT TH-?!
Wait... one second...
*gets a mouthful of water and does a spit-take*
WHAT THE F-?! You were one of the last people I expected to use footage from Bottom! Send my one thousand Thank You's to the editor that included that clip!
The guy that edited that clip: Why thank you.
This list is completely different from how i would rank, and I love it.
Silver is one of my absolute favorite characters in the IDW comics. He’s a total dork and practically a beacon of hope for everyone around him.
I've always loved his character so to see him in the list made my day
Tails vs Knuckles on flanderization…
Knuckles is consistent, while Tails is going back and forth between them.
The fact Sega allowed two of the most iconic and popular characters in the entire franchise (who are essentially Sonic's bros) to be treated as useless for so long in the core games (especially the 3D ones) is pretty telling tbh...
Josh: Today, we're gonna be talking about the Top Ten Sonic Characters!
Me: *Hush!* We don't talk about them.
3:53 Silver has actually slowly grown a fandom and become pretty popular within the fandom, so I don’t think you’ll really see much backlash to this pick outside of people who keep repeating “a rough transition into 3D.”
I think snapcube's live dub rendition might have made people think beyond the boss fight in 06.
based if including archie/IDW characters
BTW, since no on asked, the song that was used for Shadow the Hedgehog intro video was Hangman from New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Tails also has really good development in Sonic X especially in the meterex ark. I'm not crying over him having to shoot Cosmo. I'm fine!🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭😭😭
Sonic at number 7
"Why would you say something so controversial yet so true?"
Here’s a joke, blaze the cat is big the cat from different dimension. They both are purple, there both cats and they both have the same last name.
I wonder if the IDW Comics characters will appear on the list
Shadow and Sonic being back to back is fitting, Shadow is what would have happened to Sonic if he didn't have his friends. If you replaced Shadow's amnesia to him just being a loner it would track.
I would like to bring up the fact that silver's story has been used to great potential in the IDW Comics, Talking about the ramifications of the fact that while he saved the future, His home is now literally erased and now he is a time hobo
Meanwhile, Everybody vaguely remembers the events of 06 like it was a bad fever dream, with barely any recognition and when they try it makes their head hurty. Silver, Despite literally being an after thought to the main cast, Still actively chooses to help them.
Sally Acorn will always be a favorite of mine
Interesting line up, very surprised and off guard where you put Sonic, very interesting where you put Shadow (especially for his parallel coloring to yours), and surprising you didn't include Amy (not even in honored mentions)
This is a cool list! I always love a list that is honest and not just sharing the same old opinions about the Sonic characters.
Here's mine.
Honorable Mentions: Big the Cat, Chaos, Shara, Merlina, E102 Gamma, Emerl, Gemerl, Avatar and Yacker
10) Rouge the Bat
9) Silver the Hedgehog
8) Princess Blaze the Cat
7) Shadow the Hedgehog
6) A tie between Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic
5) Sticks the Badger
4) Maria Robotnik
3) Princess Tikal
2) Chip
1) a tie between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Cream
D-did Big just FUCKING YEET SILVER SONIC AKA THE BULKIER METAL SONIC?!
FINALLY! Someone who understands my love for Shadow!
Movie Knuckles: I was given the ability to THINK again after 15 years!
I am so curious what you thought about Eggman’s development in Sonic Frontiers!
Now that I think about it, it is astounding how Sonic Adventure 2 does give Eggman every motivation to seek vengeance, like Shadow, for the loss of his family members, and yet Ivo brushes that completely aside for his simple minded, metaphorically speaking, goal he's always had?
You asked, so I'll answer. Tails had worse flanderization.
You know, if you ever do a Mario version of this you could recite the entry for Eggman verbatim but just substitute Bowser and it would still make perfect sense!
actually bowser did not take over the world in sonic forces so that would be inaccurate
@@joshuasgameplays9850 yeah and to be honest, while Bowser is a good villain, he's outclassed by several other villains, especially King Boo in my opinion
TBH I have no problem with silver, I don't even know why people hate him.
the most intimidating moment for eggman has to be in sonic adventure 2 on the ark. just... pointing a gun right at amy, outsmarting tails, and nearly killing sonic.
Actually , if you read the IDW comics you'll see that Metal Sonic got his arrogance and egotism from Robotnik.
His creator gave him his biggest strengths AND weaknesses.
I guess Robotnik really is an artist of robotics , he really expressed himself with that one.
I feel validated by the fact that my favorite character, Blaze, is so high up. Sonic Rush was probably the second ever game I 100% completed.
@@chadpeterson5698 that’s nice and all, but that doesn’t mean I have to find him cool or interesting. To me he’s pretty boring
thank you for giving Shadow a good name. seriously, it's not his fault he got so flanderized by the writing into nothing but Edgy the Hedgy. he's my favorite sonic character for a reason.
My personal top 10 are:
1. Sonic
2. Shadow
3. Tails
4. Knuckles
5. Eggman
6. Blaze
7. Metal Sonic
8. Gamma
9.Omega
10. Vector.
It's hard to say what is my favorite for the sonic series it's pretty in consistent but I'm all for acknowledging the good like gamma & blaze plus a great villain always helps a story then breaks
Cosmo the seedrian is probably my favorite.
My sister actually was laughing pretty good when the "GUNS!" joke was brought up. Thanks for the good laugh Josh!
Original knuckles
Sonic heroes metal sonic. I just love that one a lot who planned out a ton for data and metal madness theme.
Eggmans Grandpa should be on here for being a man driven to madness for what happened to Maria.
Blaze and silver are cool but.......06
I remember how they presented Metal Sonic in the Sonic Heroes Booklet with the question mark. Good memories of when I got to the boss battle.
@@thecinematicmind the booklet was very minimal but it's strange how the robots and edge Lords are better developed than the mains.
Shadow has always been edgy
Honourable mentions for non-video game Sonic characters:
Whisper the Wolf from IDW Publishing's Sonic the Hedgehog: compelling tragic backstory and a jovial twist on the lone wolf.
Bunnie Rabbot from Sonic SatAM and Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog: regular sweetheart with metal muscle to boot.
Helen from Sonic X: everything Chris Thorndyke *should've* been.
Big the cat isn't that bad of a character .. just needs more fleshing out ...
I couldn't have picked a better choice for number one no matter what form of media; movies, comics, games, or shows Dr. Eggman/Robotnik is always great to have around he brings so much life and energy with him when he shows up.
Nice list, mine would probably go as follows
1. Shadow
2. Sonic
3. Silver
4. Eggman
5. Tails
6. Espio
7. Mephiles
8. E102 γ
9. Blaze
10. Knuckles
oh silver’s on this list??? *smiles like a giddy child* i’m in the minority but silver’s voice didn’t annoy me in 06 even though i prefer Quinton Flynn VA of Silver
omg yes we can all agree shadow’s best characterization is in SA2, Battle, and 06
A surprisingly good video! Nice to see Sonic characters get their due.
Funnily enough Josh didn't touch upon the inconsistencies regarding Blaze's story again (i.e. Her encouraging Silver to murder Sonic in '06). I actually have a theory about that.
Two versions of blaze I assume
@@mesiagamer5217 Nope. Technically speaking, it's the same Blaze...just reborn in a different dimension's timeline. At least... that's what I think. 🤔
@@BuzzRighteous
That is a mere theory with nothing backing it up.
Lemme break it down:
So, Blaze was featured in 06 and doesn't seem to know Sonic at all (the moment where she said "Blue hedgehog..." could be less seen as remembering him and more like pure curiosity), and she appears to let Silver go and kill Sonic, which flies in the face of Sonic Rush's story, so yes, the idea that they are two different versions of the same character could work.
@@BuzzRighteous
"So, Blaze was featured in 06 and doesn't seem to know Sonic at all (the moment where she said "Blue hedgehog..." could be less seen as remembering him and more like pure curiosity)"
Considering Rush, where Blaze debuted, released BEFORE 06, the logical conclusion is that that scene was implying that she has knowledge of him. There's no reason to SPECIFICALLY zoom in on her and have her saying the line the way she did (or at all) if they weren't trying to implying that she knows or knows of Sonic.
"after being sent to a different dimension upon sealing the flames of Iblis within herself, was reborn in that dimension and written out of Sonic's timeline altogether until Rush happened."
First of all, she didn't die and get reborn.
But it is a fun way to interpret events."
Good for you.
Well I think the movies did fix those issues with Knuckles and Eggman.
@@emberfist8347 Yes it did. And if what we saw at the end is any indication, a third movie could be a chance to do Shadow justice.
@@JCBro-yg8vd I still it is odd they have Shadow in the movies when Metal Sonic the original Sonic doppelgänger is still absent.
Here’s my favorites list of Sonic Characters (no particular order or ruleset, just going full chaotic on this)
Whisper (she cute and I will die for her), Tails (I’m a sucker for the BEEG brains), Knuckles (Because Knuckles.
I thought when he talked about Eggman swearing that he was gonna do "Snooping as usual I see."
I love Jim Carrey as Eggman with some of his over the top moments
Honestly Shadow is a character that is so shamelessly edgy that I wholeheartedly believe that it just ends up being cool.
