this video excludes my two favorite instances of censorship: 1) molly flying away instead of dying, and all subsequent shots of her grave being edited and 2) the numerous shots of tails crying over cosmo's fate, because crying over your friends death and the role you played in it is bad apparently

ok the censorship for SA2 I get, that story ( especially the ark stuff ) is incredibly dark for a children's IP & contains conspiracy, murder, *child* murder & execution, I don't blame 4kids at all for trying to censor those moments.

Having grown up with similar b̶u̶t̶c̶h̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶s edits of anime like the 90's "Rock the Dragon" Saban-era dub of DBZ and the old 80's Voltron, some of these changes I think I can understand the reasoning behind; Removal of on-screen text; >Supposedly this is done to make the show more accessible/palatable for international audiences, not just in the US. Just so editors can slap on new text to be written in their respective countries' languages... Though Sonic X seems to have done a half-assed job and didn't bother putting in replacement text in many instances, so there's a bunch of awkward blank signs all over. Changing the music; >I'd argue this isn't really technically a form of "censorship", but it's really quite frankly a full-on replacement for the OST. The reason they did this was so while b̶u̶t̶c̶h̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ editing the show when they cut out entire scenes, it won't be audibly obvious to viewers whenever the music is abruptly cut. As for also removing "Live and Learn", I'm left to blindly assume they couldn't afford the rights to the song or whatever, I can't really say for sure on that one. Overall, this seems to be a sloppy rushjob just to get the show on the air ASAP as the editors were forced to present a half-finished localization version.

Nah, keep it all in. All or NOTHING 😅! Trust me when I say: "A little maturity and edge never hurt anyone." In time there will be a good long term payoff for whoever watches stuff with actual thought put into it compared to something purposely made to brainrot.

Let’s be honest here, the only good thing 4Kids ever did was the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series since they didn’t bastardise the source material like they did with any of their anime dubs

Actually in that rouge scene that more accurately translated to “so you like it rough huh?” That fansub you used just made the joke more obvious (though “ so you like it rough huh?” Is still pretty dirty)

One censorship that always confused me which isn’t mentioned here is how Bokkun’s locket is revealed to have Cream inside it, but the reveal was just completely left out of the English version. It helped us understand Bokkun more

Here’s my Take on the live and learn situation: I was very confused on why the live and learn didn’t play in the American Dub, it’s either because since Sega is from Japan they had rights to use them while the American dub didn’t have the rights for some stupid or weird reason. So basically what I’m saying is that 4Kids would probably get a copyright strike/DMCA or they were too lazy to add live and learn into the American dub. So yeah, that’s my take on why live and learn probably wasn’t on the American dub.😐

Maybe the argument is that the firing squad in the English dub was made up of storm troopers

Im gonna be real when i say this. Im not the biggest fan of the chao. I really like the core game and I usually groan when trying to level up my chao because im not as patient as others. I like actually going through the levels and getting better at mastering them a lot more.

With Live and Learn and music I suspect it could be less censorship and more copyright issues.

I just pirated and watched the Japanese version. I consider myself having a full moral right to do so exactly because the dub ruined the show, and I technically have access to watch license of it, so it's no different than picking the resolution and tracks in my streaming service.

I can actually explain the last three points. The text and culutural are gone because of 4kids. When interviewed about their process they stated one of their goals was to keep the illusion that the show is an American made product with no asian influences (so.. overt racism) In the same interview they claim that they censor out even english text fearing it might upset younger kids who can't read. (Don't encourage them to learn or anything guys) And the sound is pure incompetence. Basically they licensed the show Sonic X but not the soundtrack. They hired Crush 40 to do the opening and used stock public domain music and sound for the rest. They repeated the mistake again and didn't license the US theme for use outside the US so Europe got stock music with random people screaming "Sonic X!"

4kids removing onscreen text is more of a cost saving shortcut than censorship. The English dubs that they made are used as the base for dubs in other languages like Spanish, German or French. Removing the text in the English version, even if it was already in English means that they don’t have to translate it in other languages

There was one where Eggman tells Rouge she has big boobs in the sub, I was expecting to see that here.

Getting rid of Rouge drinking alcohol may also be because of the fact that she's 17. Which would imply underage drinking.
