  • As a fan of the "Advanced 2" level of mountain bikes from Giant for giving the highest performance at the lowest possible dollar, even I was stunned when I pulled this bike out of the box to assemble.
The first thing that caught my eye were these new rims. 30mm internal (yup, a totally average internal width). 40mm external (way wider than usual and upon closer inspection this extra width is all to provide a broad rim edge to help reduce sidewall cuts and rim damage when experiencing full tire bottom out). The rim profile is only 21mm tall too, so the rims are flat and wide. Upon reading more about these it sounds like Giant is flexing their carbon skills to provide a premium combo of strength, compliance and weight. to complete the package, there is a new direct pull spoke hub with 5 degree engagement. Pretty fancy and an absolute surprise to find $2000 wheels on a $5899 bike. I even checked the online spec to see if what I got was even the correct spec. Wow! performance at a low price.
The rest of the bike continues the theme of extreme quality appearance, geometry, adjustability. Literally a surprisingly amazing all-round bike for the dollar.

I had two high end carbon framed mtn bike that broke on me in the last 5 yrs. Last carbon cracked in 2020 Now, I swapped all my components and rims they are carbon on my sweet aluminum frame. Super happy!

What brand did you break? We see similar numbers of cracked carbon and alloy frames, though the numbers are extremely small and in about half the cases there are signs that the bikes were used well beyond what they were designed for.

I see the aluminum version of this bike in the states. Comes in a really cool clearcoat.... Is this carbon model worth waiting for or would the aluminum be a good choice for an intermediate trail rider?

thanks for the great review btw, your explanations make the myriad of confusing choices for Giant Trance's much more understandable :)

The Trance X1 alloy version looks amazing. The only down side is the expected 2(ish) pound weight increase on the aluminum version (vs carbon) you get in USA. I'm not overly concerned about weight so it wouldn't bother me / for some it is a psychological barrier. Beyond the weight, the alloy frames look excellent, Giant does a great job on their alloy frames and the spec is really solid.

Will you review the 2024 Trance X 2 @ 3899$ ? Wondering how “bad” are the components and the weight for a Size Large. Thanks !

That is likely to be one of my next reviews. I just built one up last week and my overall impression was very positive.

Why pay for Carbon fiber? Isn't aluminum on a less expensive bike good enough?

Aluminum is great. There is some weight savings and sophistication regarding engineering a frame to be stiff in critical places while having a bit more give in others with carbon. Yes carbon bikes are more expensive but that isn't just the frame: the components on carbon bikes is often a notch or two better than what is offered on alloy framed versions.

I miss big branding on bikes, I always put nice big Giant stickers on my frame. She looks fast standing still.

I like it that way, bling paintjob and subtle branding. I'm not payed to advertise. I think it's worse on components though, the fox "style" is hideous.

No I don't like Carbon it's needlessly expensive for anything but a race bike.

I hear that. The interesting thing is that we hear similar sentiment fairly often but sales of well appointed alloy bikes are relatively small... when considering the level of quality of all the parts and wheels on this bike, it is probably similar price to equivalent alloy bikes from other brands.
