I had a 77' 6hp evy. Pretty hard to find a more honest little motor. Better looking than the later models. In my opinion, that is. Nice video as always. Best wishes to you and all your viewers from Brisbane Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Those 1st generation 6hp OMCs are great little motors. I have several of them. They run beautifully and are very reliable. The later generation ones are much stronger performers. I don't mind the looks of the later ones, but I do like the looks of the '65-'75 Evinrude 6hp and the Johnsons look good as well. The gearcase is the weak point of these later 6/7.5/8hps. They're strong though. Best wishes to you as well. Thanks for watching!
Geez, Dan likes you way more than me! This one is a beauty compared to the 81 I got from good ol Dan! (Just teasing Dan). Don't know why I like these so much, they do have a few unforgiveable engineering flaws, but run circles around the good ol 6hps they replaced. The one in my "avafart" here shows the cover of the one I got from Dan! Nonetheless, I brought it back to life. Even used the gearcase as an "engineering experiment" where I added a bronze/washer between the rear face of the reverse gear and that damn aluminum seal housing it rides on. Yours is a beauty, don't let go of it.
Believe it or not, this one looked pretty messy when I got it. Luckily it was mostly just oily dirt from ages of storage. I am very happy with how it cleaned up and turned out. I like these little motors a lot too. The 6, 7.5, and the 8hp versions. Yes, they do have a pretty bad engineering flaw in the gearcase. You came up with an excellent fix for it. I dont plan on letting this one go anywhere. I spen to long trying to get a hold of one. Thanks for watching, Don!
For sure that 7.5hp is way stronger than the classic OMC 6hp. I really want one of those 7.5's bc they run so strong. I grew up running a '76 6hp Evinrude on 13' Thornes, but for about the same weight the 7.5 pushes better. Nice outboard. I want one for the collection.
Yes, these are definitely far stronger performers than the first generation 6hp OMCs. The '84 Evinrude 6hp I have will run circles around the first gen 6s also. The 7.5s handily beat out the early 6hp for performance. I've been trying to get a hold of one of these for my collection for quite some time. I'm happy to have finally gotten one. Thanks for watching!
Just giving good motors to all. Never know, what condition they are in? This one will clean up well. Yeah, Don K. yiu had to fix your gearcase. Mentioned that to Johnnyrude on this one.
@@rainerneumeister5239 I'm assuming the dark gray hood you're referring to is the one that started in 1999. There were dark hoods before then, but are more like blue/black. Thanks for watching!
Hi there. I'm looking at buying a Johnson , either 3, 3.3 or 3.5. HP. I'm worried about spare parts if I need any in the future. I am told some parts are not available at all ?? I have a choice of a 3 HP Johnson or a 4 HP Evinrude, or indeed both. Which is the better motor in your opinion? And which one is easier to get parts for. I'm in Ireland.
@@rainerneumeister5239 Most things Johnson sold since the mod 1950s still have pretty decent parts availability, at least here in The States. What year range are you referring to with these motors? The 1950s and 60s 3hps are great little motors. The later 3-4hp Johnsons have more power and are still good little motors with maybe a little less charm. The 4hp motors pre-1985 are much the same motors as the 1985-up 3hp motors. The ratings were changed from powerhead (crankshaft) to prop shaft which led to re-rating many existing designs to a lower HP number. At that time, the difference between Johnson and Evinrude was strictly cosmetic. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 I'm looking at a 3 HP Johnson and a 3.3 HP Johnson. Years 1990 and 1991. A guy I know found it very difficult to get a carburetor bowl for a 9.9 Johnson. He waited 9 months to get it. There is also a 4 HP Evinrude available to buy. It think it's an 80s model.
@@rainerneumeister5239 Here, parts for any of those motors are pretty available. If not available new, good used replacements are often available on Ebay. I'm not sure which models these are exactly. The small motors varied quite a bit over the years. Any of them were pretty good motors. If the Evinrude 4hp was the one with the saddle fuel tank on the back of the exhaust leg, I'd probably make that my last choice of the three. Not bad motors, but I have the 2.5hp version and I have had my share of issues keeping it running. Parts are not much of a problem though. That could be different in Ireland than here, though.

I have exactly the same motor, love it!
Great little motor. I'm glad to have this one. Thanks for watching!

This one will clean up quite nicely. It's already MUCH better looking than it was. Still a bit more cleanup to do. Thanks, Dan!
Hi there. Do you know when they started putting the dark grey hoods/cowling on the Johnson motors. ??
