    Super clean car and thanks for the step by step as I'll be doing this soon. My bendix isn't retracting quickly enough and I can hear the flywheel spinning it when it starts for a second which almost sounds like a intake pop on a carbureted engine.

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  ปีที่แล้ว

      Starters can make some strange, deceptive sounds. 😂 The pinion gear on mine was making a high-pitched screeching noise that resembled a slipping serpentine belt. I checked the tension on the belts like 5 times before finally bench testing the starter and finding the source.

    I have a 1984 944 and these videos have been extremely helpful. Do you have a video planned for the rear hatch seal for the glass? I know you have the weatherstripping one, but not one for the glass itself. It would really help me out. Keep up the fantastic work brodie. Truly love your videos.

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! If you’re referring to the rear hatch delamination, this car is in pretty good shape in that area. I’ve seen a few write-ups on it and it looks like a lot of work. I’d be on the fence between DIY repairing it and just replacing the rear hatch altogether with one in good shape.

    • @jazz596344
      @jazz596344 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NC944er Where would I pick up a replacement? I thought since my glass is still in great shape I'd just buy the seal for the glass and take it to a shop, or do you think that'll cost more? Also how do I even remove the hatch? Sorry for all the questions.

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jazz596344 It’s not so much the glass as it is the frame and how the glass sits there in. What happens over time is the glass pulls out of the aluminum frame along the top and develops leaks. This can be rebuilt and resealed, but there’s no real factory part/process to do so. Replacement hatches can be found on Craigslist, eBay, or second hand shops like Plyhammer’s Parts or 944 Barn.
      Here’s an article that provides some insight on the DIY repair: www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/944_hatch_glass_repair/944_hatch_glass_repair2.htm

    Hi NC944er. Definitely your videos are very well made and extremely detailed. Perfect for someone that requires more information than usual. But is this starter motor replacement for the new type worth it?
    I have thought a different approach when disconnecting the battery. For cars with the ground to the chassis is better to disconnect negative from the battery. The reason for this is because if you touch the chassis while disconnecting the positive cable you will make a short. In the 944 their is a metal where the lower part of windshield ends, very close to the positive terminal. If you are not careful you may touch it when disconnecting the positive terminal. Regards

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The IMI Performance starter uses a genuine Denso motor, which offers proven reliability. This option or the OEM Bosche starter is the best way to go. They have some cheaper aftermarket alternatives like Duralast from AutoZone, etc., which could work in the short term. The method you describe for disconnecting the battery would add a layer of safety for sure. 👍🏼

    That starter seems like a great replacement unit. Out of curiosity did you see any Denso ID markings anywhere on the motor housing?

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has a really cool sound to it and I’ve had no issues so far. There were no “Nissan Denso” specific markings that I could see, just the IMI Performance branding sticker, their part number EA-021769, and some patent numbers stamped on the mounting bracket. However, the motor manufacturer was listed as Nippon Denso on the IMI Performance website.

    Great video and content helping 944 owners. Really appreciate it. I just picked up a 944 S2 and suffering a starting issues and was considering replacing the motor. Do you think this could be the source if my issue..... Car starts okay however if driving for a period of time when I stop the car it won't start straight away again. I have to leave it to cool before it cranks. If I try to start straight away its almost like the battery is flat. Won't crank. Really odd...

      @@anthonybryantmedia Congrats on the S2, a great model to have! That could be the starter failing, a bad ground connection, or even a faulty ignition switch. I’d run some tests on the battery to rule that out, then check and clean all grounds, specifically the ones to the engine block (there’s a video about this here on the channel) and ensure the battery terminals are nice and tight.

    Just got the new starter that you ordered, I am wondering where you got the hardware to make that adaptation to hook up to the male connection on the starter. I am thinking that both the large connections from the battery and the. Alternator go onto the large post on the starter and the little ring coming from the harness from the alternator is the one that hooks up to the adaptation? Thanks for your help.

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Yes, that’s right… it’s the smaller ring terminal from the harness that connects to the adapter and ultimately the blade style connector on the starter. I picked up the terminals/connectors from Belmetric.com and the the wire was from Amazon.

  • @hampsonlaboratory1363
    @hampsonlaboratory1363 ปีที่แล้ว

    How has that battery been working - especially when the temp is cold? I'm thinking of also going with the 96R size but the CCA of 590 is a little lower than the larger battery currently installed. You mentioned group 91 but 40R is a good fit too.

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  ปีที่แล้ว

      It does crank noticeably slower on colder days, but has never failed to start (have started it as low as 30°F). The ‘88 model year does have slightly higher compression, not sure if that impacts it significantly or not, but if you’re looking for a quick crank in all conditions, the 650cca would certainly help.

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a DME relay or wiring issue based on that info. You could jumper the DME relay connections on the fuse panel using the details on Clark’s Garage, just to rule that out. Otherwise, it may be a good idea to check and clean all grounds to the engine, as well as the battery terminals and the connections to the starter.

    The price differential between a refurbished starter and a new one is about $800 (excluding this high performance one in this video).
    Does anyone know how reliable these refurbished ones are? Is there any argument for or against given the price differential?

    • @NC944er
      @NC944er  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My understanding is that the “Porsche” branded ones are rebuilt units as well. Porsche gets them directly from Bosch, puts them in “Porsche” boxes, and slaps the “Porsche” labels on the outside, effectively dealer up-charge. They do this with oil filters, ignition coils, and any number of other parts. The OEM Bosch units are rebuilt by Bosch and sold under their label for about $250. If you talk to the guys at Pelican Parts or 944Online, they’ll likely explain its the same part, and they often come with a 2-year warranty. There are 3rd party refurbishers as well, example: AutoZone carries “Duralast” starters for the 944 at about $150, but they’re usually Bosch units that have been rebuilt by an entity other than the OEM, hence discounted, but also with a warranty. So I see no advantage in purchasing an $800-$900 unit directly from the Porsche Dealership.

      HA! For the longest time, I was tracking down what I thought was a belt squeal at startup - replaced the serpentine belt , no change, tightened belt, no change. Finally gave up, but after bench testing the OEM starter, discovered the pinion gear was grinding in the housing. Now no more noise and potential “smoke show” averted. 😂
