Interesting switch, thanks for the review. IGMP snooping is used to manage multicast traffic. The switch looks for IGMP messages to determine which ports are interested in which multicast groups.

These hybrid switches are very appealing to me. Ive got the little brother of this switch with 2 10gbe and 4 2.5gbe long term as a scale out my network I'll be using the 10g ports as uplinks between rooms and have devices connected to the 2.5g ports

If you want a rack mount 10G switch, I would get the Netgear MS510TXM. At about $450, it very close in price to this QNAP rack mount switch, but the Netgear has 4x10G ports, 4x2.5G ports and 2 dedicated 10G SFP+ fiber uplink ports. I would even consider the Netgear MS510TXM over the desktop QNAP despite the $150 price difference, as the extras 10G ports would be worth it. Plus, Netgear has a lifetime warranty.

That looks like a nice one! Where are you seeing them at that price? There's a third party seller on Amazon with them but selling at a huge markup.

Cool 2.5/10G managed switch for a killer price! It's funny that, while being bigger, the desktop one uses an external power supply. Product segmentation at its finest.

This is great, Lon. If you have an opportunity to speak a little longer with some of these hardware manufacturers, for myself I would be very interested in a "drop-in" replacement for our existing router -- a Cisco model RVS4000. If that model were to be upgraded to support 4 or 5 x 2.5GbE RJ-45 ports, the uplink to 1G cable modems could remain unchanged at 1G -- to minimize costs. Likewise, more expensive models could support 8 x 2.5GbE RJ-45 ports, and a 10G uplink to the Internet. Just so you know, I did email Cisco to ask if they have any plans to offer the latter, but sadly they replied that they do not have any such plans. Your reviews are so highly visible on the Internet, Cisco might consider such faster routers, if they hear that recommendation directly from you. Another permutation would be dual-WAN ports on future higher-end models -- for load balancing and fail-over functions.

Another good review. Thanks Lon. Can you cover the shortage on printers sometime? I see lots of shortages at local electronics stores and other places that normally have printers...very few in stock. Is this related to the other shortages going on? Thanks

      @LonSeidman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Most definitely.. printer demand went through the roof with the pandemic along with electronics shortages

Nice review. And to further proof you can get Intel X550 RJ45 multigig NICs on eBay that support 1/2.5/5/10 which is what I have added to my servers. My servers have 11 x 8TB WD Gold drives with Raid 6 and a hot spare so they can feed up stats very fast. They do slow down on writes due to the R6 overhead.

@Lon.TV Thanks for this review. This is the first dedicated switch I've owned, and I've been very pleased with it so far. I'm not really using all its features yet; I haven't tried setting up VLANs because I know my router doesn't support them and I'm not sure if that would be a problem, but everything I've tried has worked well. :)
This is marketed as a wallmount switch, but I can't find any instructions from QNAP on how to do that. There's nothing in the quick-installation guide, at least. There are holes in the bottom, so at worst I suppose I could put some picture frame-hanging hardware on the wall and just stick it up there, but that seems less than ideal. I at least wish they recommended the best fitting screw size. :P

I hate it when companies segment like this. Most people will go for the desktop version and then install it messily into a rack anyway as the price is a lot less and features are identical (if you are lucky, they might use a shelf!) Used to see that time and time again when working on customer networks.

I have the desktop version, works ok in unmanaged mode ... BUT when I setup any VLAN using port 9 or 10 .... locks up the switch ... waiting on QNAP support to diagnose .. but VERY surprised at this issue as its kinda the first thing you do with a managed switch

2.5gb is 2 and a half times faster than 1gb. That is still a big differences. We have just gotten so used to everything being x10 faster. Also wifi 6 is a good use case for 2.5gb hardware.

I move a lot of data both professionally and personally. The overall speed seems to be the main price differentiator in the routers I own. For example my cheap routers can do maybe 2x overall speed. (ie 2 gigs of data can flow in and out of the device at any given time) Compare that to my Cisco router which can do max speed across all ports. This switch can do 80, which is impressive. I haven't done the price comparison yet.

Im curious which one would be quieter for home use. Plastic model got 1 fan, metal model got 2 fans and cost around 25% more. From management page of metal version i see fans spins at around 2100 rpm having 2 ports with no real traffic so its probably their idle speed. Can anyone tell if plastic variant have also 2100 rpm?. Regards

Except that when I click on the link to the product reviewed in this video provided in the description, it brings me to an Amazon product page looking completely different. Not only is it white, but it is also larger with more ports or whatever than this video. So what gives?

considering all the security problems with the NAS, I am hesitant. Maybe the price is so good due to their selling data that they collect from the switch.

QNAP says on their other hardware that you can just create another user and grant admin privileges then disable the "admin" user. Can you add users on this switch? I also find that annoying in this day and age

@Tano The Unifi Switch Aggregation has (8)10G SPF+ ports and costs 269USD. even if have to buy a couple of RJ45 adapters to have 2.5, 5 and 10G on RJ45 form, is a much better value than this one

    • @pbrigham

@Tano I know what you mean, I have and I had other brands as well, but I prefer the convenience of Unifi, the time a don't lose anymore because you have to login into several types of equipment just to configure a VLAN is priceless. Yes for those who have time yeah, Pfsense Firewall, Cisco or Mikrotik Switches and WIFI from Ubiquiti, but I just don't have the time or the patience anymore.
