Happy sounding for a song about a final resting place. Cemeteries were places of reverence where families can picnic and celebrate. Not just a place to cry.
certainly one of my favorite songs! Trouble is I've played it so many times I'm getting all sorts of solicitations for cremations and funerals. And I'm in that age bracket. But I love the song, one of favorites ever, funeral ads not withstanding.
@@matthewdennis1739 and that other new song is even better. It's proof that the Decemberists have finally gone back to what made me a fan of them in the first place: prog rock.
My son passed day before Christmas. My car radio didn’t work three days. This song popped on. A channel I don’t even listen to. I miss him so much. I love you son
Same for me but it's my wife...we both have good reasons to embrace our passing with a smile ...dancing out way across the rainbow bridge that leads us home to be with the ones we loved..what a comforting thought Love and light Sorry about your Son...I felt your words brother... Pack up the stereo..meet at the burial ground
Saw them for the first time in St Louis last week, the wife and I had such a good time that it only compounded on my regret of not getting into them 20 years ago. An insanely talented ensemble and the song writing is nothing short of brilliant.
Brings me back. Reminds me why/how much I love you guys. Like a friend coming back after moving away for sometime. Great song. Looking forward to the new album.
forty nine comments later, thanks to James Mercer and his falsetto. I haven't been this intrigued in years since The Hazards of Love. solid. ear worm worthy too.
Fun and catchy, and as good as anything they've done, which is saying plenty. The girls coming in with "Merry go round" at the end is absolutely worth the wait.
I've been hearing this on the radio on my commute but the station's info scroll has been stuck on a Bob Marley song for 6 weeks so I couldn't figure out what it was. I finally remembered enough lyrics to google it and I can't believe I didn't recognize that it was The Decemberists. Its not like there is any other band that sounds anything like them.
I Love this song! But my Hearing isn't what it should be, so when I've been listening to this sone, I thought it was "meet at the merry-go-round". LOL I hear this song often on WXRV "The River", 92.5 FM in Haverhill, MA. I just saw your performance Tonite on "Jimmy Kimmel Live". ❤
Yay!!! I needed this. Thank you! Looking forward to hearing the rest of the new music. PS. What would have been super funny is to have the names of all the dead characters from your songs on the headstones in the background. 🪦💀
I just discovered this song yesterday. A very good song, and all day I was thinking it sounded like something else, but couldn't figure it out. You've nailed it! It reminded me of Sloop John B!
I was in the bathroom of a fast food joint when I first heard this song and gave me horror movie vibes. Like I was gunna walk out to Leatherface in the dining room 😂
Can someone make a mashup of this and Hazy Shade of Winter. I know it’s just the “ground” rhyme making the connection in my head but I think it could work.

This video is visually beautiful but still sucks. And the music is wonderful, too. But it skips about a quarter of the lyrics. What the hell is this?I stopped listening at :55. I'd already heard it on the other official video and this was just an annoying tease. I hope some third party comes up with a full set of lyrics, even if it's all text.
Huh? The only skipped lyric is 2:06. And I am pretty sure that is an artistic choice since the line is kind of an aside. Unless you count them skipping oh’s and the backing vocals (which also don’t come in until after the first 55 sec).

The Decemberists have been by far the best band in the world for the last 22 years, and they still are. I will see them again in May.
... Bit of an extreme statement but go off queen.
they're excellent. I don't know if I'd say best, but dang I'm just happy for a great new song from them.

Fantastic song!! I especially like the line 'somewhere out beyond these maladies in my head' :)

Instant classic.
It’s the best and happiest song I’ve ever heard about a cemetery. I wish I could give it a like every time I hear it.
I love how you can also hear "melodies" for "maladies". Love the song!
