The G1 design is infinitely more iconic, it's evident why it was released under the "Lego Icons" theme. The problem you have with the set is THE selling point to the majority of fans.

I get why you don’t like the original model but the reasons you didn’t like it are the reasons why all of us G1 fans enjoy it so much. It’s incredibly accurate and the boxy look has a lot of charm and I think your re-design misses the point of that.
Not everyone is a G1 one fan. Not all of us were born in the 80s. Some people were born in the late '90s. It stands to reason, that other people prefer a different styles.

Despite that, I think gutting the transformation and then redesigning it to look like a different version of the character and proclaiming it to be better feels like missing the point. It's like rating the horsepower of a minivan to a muscle car. They are just trying to achieve completely different things. I'd argue this version is lesser because it attempts to achieve a lesser product than the original. I prefer designs like Armada's and Prime's, but I wouldn't say the Icons set was bad because it didn't achieve that specific version of the character.
One of the main reasons people bought the sets is because it transforms. The fact that your model doesn’t transform would cause lots of people to think twice before taking apart their model and trying to mod it.

I actually did like the g1 design it’s simple and blocky but that’s how the show was it was fine as it was but you made look like the idw version I mean it looks cool but I just like the g1 design better
I got to disagree on this. Sure it looks cooler but that ez when you don’t need to worry about a transformation. And plus if I wanted a buildable Optimus figure that doesn’t transform I would just get the model kit it way better then this and cheaper.

Definitely love how accurate to the IDW Prime's design this alternate build is, even more impressive that it doesn't use any outside parts from the set, but the complaint that the intended build is too boxy almost sounds oxymoronic considering that's literally what his G1 build is meant to be. He's supposed to be boxy. That may not be your preferred look for Prime, but that comes down to there being so many different iterations of the character, not whether or not the design was lacking.
The original design was perfectly fine. Heck, when i saw the thumbnail, i went "oh boy did this guy actually make God Ginrai" (one of the original Japanese interpretations of Optimus that wasnt Optimus) purely because of how... Unusually sleek the design was. Optimus has never been that sleek, even in IDW hes still quite boxy, and especially both the toy and original cartoon versions were VERYYYYY boxy. But thats the charm of Optimus. Hes a big strong brute that looks like he just wants to be your friend or that he could literally stand in as your own father. This design doesnt convey that very well, unlike literally EVERY OTHER VERSION OF PRIME. Even the Bayverse movies managed to make him look father-like by giving him a more aged and gentle appearance despite him going on multiple anger-fueled genocides. The blocky appearance makes him look friendlier, hence why so many people in the comment section are so attached to the G1 version, theres a hint of "this is who i want to look up to and have look after me" kind of feeling. This design, while sleeker and more God Ginrai than Optimus Prime, instantly loses all of that familiarity and special-ness for gaps, no Matrix of Leadership, and IT STILL DOESNT HAVE KNEE JOINTS!
Strong disagree. My attachment is to the G1 Optimus, not more modern versions, so I'd much rather have the set as released. I like the idea of a highly detailed 2-in-1 set, but I still want it to be G1.
I like this version and all, but the original is way better in my opinion. The original Optimus was boxy for a reason, it was based on G1 Optimus who IS very boxy. I prefer the original mainly because its more accurate than this Alt build. Optimus is a boxy character, which is why the Alt build isn't as good as the original, it makes him look sleek and slender (which he definitely isn't, he turns into a truck for christs sake). The OG Optimus is just way better, not even taking consideration of its transforming function. Good video nonetheless 👍
While it is true that Optimus was boxy in the cartoon, if you look at his animation model, he is a lot taller and more slender than Lego's representation. I don't think the boxyness is there for cartoon accuracy, even if pays some homage to the toy, I think it's their for the transformation gimmick. And I don't care much about said boxyness because I bought the set for the gimmick, and not its looks. For similar reasons, I don't care about the Thigh-wheels and bumper waist on Lego Optimus, despite these qualities normally being a turnoff for me on OP figures. I think OG Lego Prime is the best at being what it's supposed to be: a great and fun homage to the character and toy, but if you care more about display-ability and shelf-presence, the Ransom Fern alt build is a big improvement, even if it takes the slenderness to the extreme and is much more anime-esque stylistically.

Honestly, I will say that I by far prefer the original. A lot more people know the G1 design - why should the ONE Lego Optimus Prime be anything other than the most famous version of Prime? Sure it's more detailed, it looks great, but the original version has a sort of je ne sais quoi lol I guess that's not helpful but, yeah I would say if I got this figure, I would stick with the original. I'd probably try this version though, because it is definitely a good looking build!
I have so many problems with this mod honestly: I don’t think that the trade offs are beneficial I think if u really want the idw design, just get flame toys I think the transformation is the real selling point of the original, and taking that away just seems wrong
I do like this build, but the OG is basically a perfect 1:1 for classic Optimus Prime. I don't know if I'd, without a doubt, know this is Prime the same way the base model is perfect
The only problem I saw with the original build is it had no knee bend but other than that, it's a great build for something that can actually transform
The IDW version of Optimus Prime had dozens of different designs and bodies, most of which resembled the G1 iteration, as it was a G1 based continuity. Your design is based on the Flame Toys IDW Optimus, who...I don't remember ever actually being in the comic, it was just a cool dynamic Optimus design for their line of model kits. The end result feels a lot more generic than the original. Now, I wish the original had knees, sure-but that's the only addition I'd make as a Transformer's fan. I mean, it's a transformer that transforms. That's great!
The flame toys design was actually used quite a bit in the idw transformers 2009 run especially in the later issues and in the earlier phase 2 comics. It’s an Alex milne design so it popped it in comics he did the art for. A lot of the flame toys figures take inspiration from the idw comics such as optimus, drift, megatron and rodimus.

Although the Flametoys figure shown was used as reference for this Lego design, the actual character design for Optimus was created by artist Don Figueroa and predates the Flametoys figure by almost a decade. Optimus Prime was first shown with this design in the IDW comics starting in the series "For All Man Kind" and retained it up until "More Than Meets the Eye #28," after which it was substituted with the Evergreen design, by Emiliano Santalucia. Also, to set the record straight, this isn't TommyCBrick's design. It was made by a builder named Ransom Fern.
Since you are unfamiliar with the design, I'll tell you where it came from. This is Don Figuroa's Optimus design. He appears this way at the end of All Hail Megatron Coda, also during The Transformers (2010), and also during MTMTE and even RID. I highly recommend these comics. You're missing out!
You need the set 3 times. 1 robot 2 truck 3 to transform. I'm busy with robot version and there are more tips then the 5 modifications. The truck also needs a lot of work to make it a lot better. A lot of money for a set which is in both options not correct. I hope that starscream will be better

I get what you are saying with all of this. But you have to understand, this set was aimed for us 80s babies/90s kids that grew up with the cartoon. Majority of us are not IDW fans. And to be honest, for a moment I thought this was a Transformers Animated Prime...to which I don't understand people's fascination with that either lol
Something you probably should know about the transformers community is that most of us prefer the boxy g1 designs more than other designs, and that the non-transformable kreo sets where a sin. That said, I am glad you are happy with this alt build, that's the beauty of Lego, you can make whatever you want. Just saying most people probably will disagree with the things in this video.
Ngl i LOVE Kreo the sets were meh and the fact you had to build the alt mode is bad but it had so much charm and personality and the mini figs were amazing and cute.

Why are so many people complaining about the actual design to say it’s supposed to be a remake of the G1 toy and if anything the blocky Optimus prime is like the best one
as a transformers for many decades, the IDW set is much more attractive to me. having the option to make either version makes this set now appeal to those who are attracted to the more iconic and classic g1 look or also to the IDW rendition of the character (and the IDW continuinity is considered by many transformers fans as the best continuity in the history of transformers). i ruled out buying this set until i saw the IDW version.
- I only see the favourited comments being those of unquestioned praise for this design being better than the original, despite how subjective and contextual that is ie transformers vs non transformers, franchise nostalgia etc. Not even comments that disagree but still respect your preference and opinion are favourited - As so many people have said, you've missed the point of the set, it's aimed at people who are either transformers fans which G1 is massive in or Lego fans who have a passing Knowledge of Transformers, and G1 is the most easily recognisable part of TF media (other than the movies I think) - For transformers fans, this doesn't really help as it doesn't transform and fans don't like the OG show being discredited, and for Lego fans from what I've seen the build is behind a paywall (and there are many fans who've already made transformable G1 prime's with better articulation anyway) And for IDW fans, iron factory and MMC and others gotchu - Deez nuts
I understand exactly what your saying, but the problem is there was already Lego Optimus prime that looked better made by kreo, but the problem was that it wasn’t really a transformer if it doesn’t transform. So when Lego released their Optimus it was awesome that it looked great and it transformed
Yea imma disagree on most of it. This is def meant to be just a G1 prime and its done really well for a (almost) no parts forming transformer. But i will say i still like the IDW version but i cant say it looks better than the G1.

Bought a second set and made this. Looks awesome next to G1 and Voltron. I’m amazed how this guys brain made this using only the G1 set. Sitting on a shelf, this is coolest looking of the 3.
G1 has the simplicity that makes it better, plus it can transform If you want more detail (by sacrificing the transformation) you can go as far as building a live action model with all the details, but that wasn't the point of the model
this guy also has another build based on G1 prime from the Bumblebee movie and it's equally amazing. He's got a bundle with both instructions on sale for $5 off.

So I have zero opinion on either of the two models, g1or IDW, seeing as to how I grew up with the bay verse movies instead of the other two but I also know what the g1 optimus looks like and I do like it alot but this model does look good as well once again not ignoring the g1 comment you made but the g1 look is a lot more Iconic for optimus prime hence the reason it is under the icons name

The boxy version is charming, transforms, and looks more g1, but this one is just absolutely gorgeous.

Something you probably should know about the transformers community is that most of us prefer the boxy g1 designs more than other designs, and that the non-transformable kreo sets where a sin. That said, I am glad you are happy with this alt build, that's the beauty of Lego, you can make whatever you want. Just saying most people probably will disagree with the things in this video.
Ngl i LOVE Kreo the sets were meh and the fact you had to build the alt mode is bad but it had so much charm and personality and the mini figs were amazing and cute.

as a transformers for many decades, the IDW set is much more attractive to me. having the option to make either version makes this set now appeal to those who are attracted to the more iconic and classic g1 look or also to the IDW rendition of the character (and the IDW continuinity is considered by many transformers fans as the best continuity in the history of transformers). i ruled out buying this set until i saw the IDW version.
- I only see the favourited comments being those of unquestioned praise for this design being better than the original, despite how subjective and contextual that is ie transformers vs non transformers, franchise nostalgia etc. Not even comments that disagree but still respect your preference and opinion are favourited
- As so many people have said, you've missed the point of the set, it's aimed at people who are either transformers fans which G1 is massive in or Lego fans who have a passing Knowledge of Transformers, and G1 is the most easily recognisable part of TF media (other than the movies I think)
- For transformers fans, this doesn't really help as it doesn't transform and fans don't like the OG show being discredited, and for Lego fans from what I've seen the build is behind a paywall (and there are many fans who've already made transformable G1 prime's with better articulation anyway) And for IDW fans, iron factory and MMC and others gotchu

I understand exactly what your saying, but the problem is there was already Lego Optimus prime that looked better made by kreo, but the problem was that it wasn’t really a transformer if it doesn’t transform. So when Lego released their Optimus it was awesome that it looked great and it transformed

Just bought the set myself and honestly, I much prefer the G1 look over the newer build. The iconic boxy look is the Optimus Prime I grew up with.

Yea imma disagree on most of it. This is def meant to be just a G1 prime and its done really well for a (almost) no parts forming transformer. But i will say i still like the IDW version but i cant say it looks better than the G1.
I don't think this looks better than the g1 design to me, I just prefer that a lot more and the fact it transforms and doesn't require parts forming makes it better to me
The original is honestly better, it’s more iconic, it transforms which is a big part of the character and it looks better.
I had buy two set now.
Bought a second set and made this. Looks awesome next to G1 and Voltron. I’m amazed how this guys brain made this using only the G1 set. Sitting on a shelf, this is coolest looking of the 3.
G1 has the simplicity that makes it better, plus it can transform
If you want more detail (by sacrificing the transformation) you can go as far as building a live action model with all the details, but that wasn't the point of the model

Most of us who love optimus and are over 35 expect him to be boxy...its his look ...hes not a sports car hes a truck......i dunno just my 2 cents....i will say he looks really cool and i admire your creativity❤

So I have zero opinion on either of the two models, g1or IDW, seeing as to how I grew up with the bay verse movies instead of the other two but I also know what the g1 optimus looks like and I do like it alot but this model does look good as well once again not ignoring the g1 comment you made but the g1 look is a lot more Iconic for optimus prime hence the reason it is under the icons name

Sorry to tell you but the original G1 boxset is version is way much better. And have you watched the Voltron cartoon? It really is bigger in scale compared to Optimus Prime.
