    Looks great! One tip is to calk/silicone around the edges of the counters against the wall and sink. This will really seal it in against water for a longer lasting impact.

    Put the strip lighting at the back of the shelf on top of the top shelf. The ambient lighting looks better when you dont see the bulbs. It will still give you extra lighting. The kitchen looks so much better than its original condition

      i actually stuck some of that rubber door seal tape half over the visible parts of my strip lighting and it just subtly covered the spotty glare 😅 works for a cheap hack if you dont want to move it.

      This is what I was going to suggest 😊 on the top of the top shelf behind everything and the bottom of bottom shelf like you had it. So you get the ambience but can’t actually see the lights 😁

    I have used this brand on my kitchen too. My advise for the non-textured contact paper is to pop the bubbles with a needle BEFORE using the hair dryer. What the hair dryer does is that it makes the plastic loose so you can move it around (like for example in corners) and most importantly, it fixes it in place. Also, it tends to enhance existing bubbles, that's why you should pop them before hair drying. So if you do want to use that green one for another project, try this ;)
    Great video btw

      How does the contact paper hold up over time with the heavy use kitchen counters get?

  • @lua6041
    @lua6041 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    It looks really nice!❤️
    A tip about contact paper: you could spray a mix of water and a little drops of dish washer detergent on the surface before initiate the job with the contact paper. It will let you reposition the paper if you need to, many times, without damage. The mixture will dry after, without prejudice to the sticker. 😉

      @theyoftheravens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Seconding this! Same goes for window privacy film. We're street level and wanted light without being in a fishbowl and that worked a treat for being able to reposition the opaque film while setting it up. Using something like a credit card/gift works great as a scraper for bubbles, too. 💛

    Looks great! I did this to my counters as well and a lot of the videos I watched before recommended caulking around the sink to keep water from eventually curling it up, I’ve done that and have had them for almost a year and no issues!

  • @lindseycarpenter86

    Looks amazing! I would suggest adding legs to your Ikea cube organizer to make it the same height as the countertop?

  • @lk1869
    @lk1869 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I see that caulking has been mentioned. Yay! Another suggestion for anyone trying this, a steel edged ruler butted up to edge to be cut the makes cutting nice and straight, and so very easy.

    The kitchen looks great! Maybe it’s a good idea to remove the light strips from the top shelf only so you can’t see them? Because you mentioned looking straight into the, and I noticed the bottom shelf giving the countertop a nice glow. Have a great day!

    Excellent job on the countertops and the cabinets. I used a granite pattern contact paper on my countertops a few years ago. It stood up pretty well to normal use. I did have to redo it this year. Didn't mind. It was cheaper than buying a new kitchen.

    Pop air bubbles with a pin, not a knife as knives inevitably create a slit rather than a single hole even when only the point at the the very end is used.

    What an amazing transformation! You would have never known it was vinyl! You’ve given me inspiration to use this stuff on an old chest of drawers and a top of my dressing table! Also agree about the light, looks great on the bottom shelf but not on the top ☺️

    I used the Primark lighting strip at Christmas it had a very short shelf life,with the individual squares blanking out. I liked the concept and will be looking for a sturdier version.

  • @iwearscarves

    It looks so good! I used vinyl on my kitchen because I can’t afford a brand new kitchen yet, but it looked like something in student halls when I moved in so I needed a quick makeover! I hired a guy to come sort my vinyl though, I do not have the patience for that. I loved the pistachio colour but it’s a shame the paper wasn’t good, but I also chose white for my kitchen and painted the walls olive green! My thought process was it’s easier to buy a tin of paint and change the wall colour than changing the vinyl haha

  • @purplewombat1923

    Love the white woodgrain cupboard doors. It ties in with the wall colour and makes the countertops pop and the countertops are a great match with the timber flooring. The whole kitchen looks wonderful now :-)

    This is the best contact paper project I’ve seen! I just put that strip lighting under me kitchen cabinets and I love it. I think it looks better when you can’t see it so try it on top of the top shelf instead of under! Great job!

  • @juliebrooke6099

    It looks great. I think you could have avoided having to do the cabinet doors if you’d chosen a paper for the worktop which was less similar to the wood colour of the doors ie. more contrast. The finished result is really pleasing though.

    Oh wow, I am loving that contact paper, I love the wood look it really looks high end not cheap, and the decision to put the textured white contact paper is really nice it makes the kitchen so bright and cheery. Removing air bubbles if you get them can be removed with a sewing pin. Pop the bubble and smooth out the contact paper. The air Wil escape via the tiny hole and should be so tiny you won't notice. Looks good!

    • @striketochill
      @striketochill 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      She did this in this video, just used a knife which doesn't make a difference vs. sewing pin. A hole is a hole. Clearly it didn't work out in the case of this paper!

    Great improvement! I used fablon on my kitchen doors as a temporary fix until new cabinets were installed, that was almost 7 years ago! I rent a HA flat and they had to cut back on spending so I am glad I did the fablon covering as the doors were a patchy green wood effect before and now they are a clean white. They still look pretty good too. x

    I think the lights look fine, the only issue with the top shelf is because it’s so high you can actually see the strip and bulbs but the bottom shelf looks good where you can just see the glow

    I did my dining table with dcfix 18 months ago now, thinking it was only £10 so not so bad if it needed replacing quickly. It's held up perfectly and hasn't need redoing and our table gets loads of use. It's been so good that since I have covered our horrible white plastic window ledges with an oak wood affect, and the bathroom sill which was just plaster I cut plywood to fit and covered in that in marble effect. It's literally transformative! Best cheap fix ever.

    I’d say with the led strips that you don’t really need it beneath the upper shelf. It would look really nice with just the one right above the counter..but with the upper shelf, I think it might just be too visible. Also, if you move the strip on the lower shelf a bit more forward, then it will light up what’s beneath it a bit better, it won’t be as visible and the items on the countertop will be less likely to cast shadows on themselves.

    Looks so much better! I see some people already tipped you on the silicone. 😋 And I think if you spraypainted the door nobs/handles or changed them up for new ones it could add something to the vibe of the room as well 😊 Over here in the Netherlands you can buy them pretty cheap!

  • @dees3179

    I think the issue with the led strips is the warm white colour. I would suggest that works better in a cosy style room such as a living room. Cold white would be better in the kitchen.
    Very impressive contact paper application. I look forward hearing how it ages.
    I have the exact same tiles you stuck on the bathroom floor. How are yours sticking? Mine are about a year older, there are a couple which never quite stuck properly but they never got worse. Biggest problem is that the adhesive was bigger than the top surface so I couldn’t get them tight, also, cutting out round the loo was hell.

    Looks fabulous! I'd leave the light strip under the lower shelf only. And caulk around the sink :) Hot tip when caulking, tape off the area around the edge of where you want to caulk so that when you run your finger around it the excess goes onto the tape and gives you a nicer finish!

    Love this new look! Personally, I don’t think contact paper is suitable for high-traffic environments that will need to be frequently cleaned. I’ve tried it on my bathroom vanity and while it looked good at first, it got gross quick and started lifting around the edges after a couple of months given the steam and water contact.

  • @questionmark9819
    @questionmark9819 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks lovely, I wonder if the little light strip would look better on top of the shelf instead of underneath, the top shelf i mean and the other light strip can go below the bottom one so it will look a bit more soft.

    I used that brand on my bath counter and it already has a cut in it. I used it on my kitchen cabinet drawers, on any corner it doesnt stick & leaves an air gap. I need to use a hair dryer to see if I can eliminate the gap. This is thicker than the contact brand paper in the US. I used beech. Yours may be the same

    I love it! My 23 yr old kitchen could certainly do with an update! We had the walls and ceiling professionally repainted at the end of 2018. But the countertops and cabinets need some love! With inflation being out of control right now, I don't want to overpay for everything - so contact paper might fit the bill until things settle down and I can do a proper update!

    It turned out so well! I could never do that though as I hate contact and contact hates me too 😂. When my 3 children were at school and I would have to cover about 30 books with contact at the start of the year let me tell you it wasn’t good to be anywhere near me as there were quite a few swear words coming out of my mouth 🤬. I love it how you were using the mini chopping board to smooth out the air bubbles 🤣. I’ve found the same with contact in that some types are easier to use than others. xx

    I used an £8.99 butcher's block effect contact paper on my kitchen. It looks amazing. If you position one tiny edge of the sticky surface onto your counter with the underneath paper peeled back , then peel away the rest of it smoothing the sticky top bit onto the surface as you go along, with the heel of your hand, air bubbles don't happen. DC-Fix have a You Tube video showing exactly how😁

    Looks fab 😍 I'd put pink contact paper on the dishwasher door too to match your beautiful fridge! 💗

    The lights on the bottom shelf look good but on the second shelf, not so much since its not a strip. Otherwise it looks great!

    You did a great job! I'm trying to cover my kitchen countertops with contact paper and there were so many bubbles. Your video has encouraged me to try again and find a thicker paper. Wish me luck!!!

    It looks absolutely amazing, you must feel so pleased! Also, what about putting a sealing around edges of sink to really smarten up? It’s easy to peel away after too when you remove the contact paper 🙌🏼 xx

    Tip for smoothing anything, from wallpaper to contact paper, is a paint roller.
    Have always used one, never had a bad bubble.

      A wide dry paintbrush works too.

    If you search light strip diffuser it will make the led strip look like one light. It should slip over the existing led strip

    I would put the striplight ontop of the self in the back. Then you get the light but don't see that it is small cubes

    I think I'm going to try this on our countertops , the 32 year old ones that we were going to replace shortly after moving into our house in 1998. Now we need to replace the flooring and have the place painted, inside and out. The counters just never make it to the top of the list!

    Looks great. I would add a bead of silicone calk and put a bit of olive oil on a rag and rub it all over the sink to shine it up. I would add a couple of LED candles to the shelf or a mini lamp rather than the light strip.
