    Fantastic quote at 24:05.
    "But I was never interested in money. Money doesn't mean anything. It's not interesting. I call myself a maker; I want to make stuff. And whether that's software, or 3D, or designs, or building teams or companies-I want to make stuff. That's my passion. And the money is a means. And sometimes you need it to do something big, so you have to work, make money, and then you can do something with it. But the real satisfaction is in *making* something."

      @@kdvr766 Sort of true, but his point still stands. Obviously if you don't have enough money to function, money is _everything._
      But for many big business owners, even once they're living comfortably and not having to worry about money... money is _still_ everything, and they seek to maximise profits, through _any_ means, even when they already have more than they could realistically spend in a lifetime.

      I don't work to make money, I make money to create.

    16 years ago, I opened up Blender. It came on a free software CD with a computer magazine my dad bought. I din't understand english that well and found it really hard to understand how the interface worked. I was 14 years old and thought that 3D models was the coolest thing ever. I stuck with it... I remember when ray-tracing got introduced. Glossy reflections and refractions was added to the internal renderer.
    Today, I work as a developer/3d-artist and use Blender almost every day. I have worked as a full time 3d-artist with Maya for a while too, but I never really liked it.
    It's wierd listening to this crazy Dutch guy who doesn't have a clue about my existence, knowing that his actions defined my life in a great way. Hey, if I hadn't start learning 3D with Blender, I wouldn't have met my wife at the graphics education I took. I wouldn't have my two kids with her either. So... Thank you Ton! You've made more difference than you would ever know.

      similar happened to me, at the same age and with a computer magazine - but with Rhinoceros 2.0...
      but afterwards I worked with Cinema 4D and also Maya (but not for long), then I decidet to learn blender 2.4*;
      now I work with both: Rhinoceros (5.0) for CAD 3Dprinting and blender (2.7*) for everything else...
      sometimes also in combination.
      The olny bad thing in the momment is, that the newer versions of blender require newer OpenGL / DirectX;
      maybe there could be an option to run and use the program, but the "special" options would be disabled.

      not really, without charging money there is no jobs, without no jobs how would the system work ? Blender is a great Software, I use both Maya and Blender, as somebody said Professional studios use Maya as they can call their team and ask what's not working, at times people from Autodesk even come and fix onsite issues. with Blender this is not the case, as it is an opensource software, it doesn't provide any kind of warranty (though it barely causes problems) and therefore is very god for small studios and Hobbyists.

    • @sourishmazumdar2107

      With having all this free software I'd even love if Blender offers an Enterprise Version of blender where it charges an Annual Fee (you do always have the option to use the free version with all the tools being Bender an opensource software software at it's core). Charging mainly for the Support they provide. This money can also support faster development of Blender (All though it's already doing very good).

    If Blender did one thing - it made me discover that I'm not the most uncreative person on earth. I can't paint/draw for shit, my old paintings/drawings from school look like a blind monkey had painted/drawn them - so every art teacher "encouraged" me to stop trying because I supposedly haven't got any talent. Then, many years later (in fact, only last year), I learned about the existence of Blender and started tinkering with it. And to my surprise I found out that I'm in fact not the most uncreative guy on earth - I watched many tutorials and tried stuff out, and by now I have even created entire rooms with furniture and all kind of stuff in it , etc.! And this even got me started in making games! So - thanks Blender (and Blender Guru for that matter :D) for enriching my life a bit. 😎

He did stuff most of us couldnt even dreamt of like they were nothing. I remember him saying, "Its not my software, its YOUR software...". That thing really struck my heart. I remember opening Blender for the first time ~5 years ago, clicking on the interface and realising it was right-click to select = uninstalled immediately. It just felt like everything was going to be an obstacle. Such a small change and it made it feel so much more welcoming. Your doughnut tutorial did most of the rest. Blender is a godsend. Even using the 'educational' versions of software that I have access to as a teacher I feel like they could pull it from me at any time and I'll end up paying for something. With Blender I have faith that it's a skill worth learning as I'll always have access to it. So glad to see it going from strength to strength.

    As a Maya veteran (beta tester on v1) who recently discovered the wonders of Blender, I want to lower my hat to Ton Roosendal. The tool he created actually works, I consider it next-gen in terms of UI and paradigms, and that is proabably because he refued to go corporate and maintain a spirit of efficiency. The deeper I dive in Blender, the more amazed I am. Being used to using the most expensive software out there, I didn’t pay much attention to something that comes for free, distrusting its functionality. I now see how wrong I was.

    Thank you so much for giving us a truly incredible piece of software, Ton Roosendaal. To me, Blender and Linux are the top open-source programs on the planet at this date, in terms of quality and effort and usefulness. You have truly created something rare that you have every single reason be proud of!
    I have to personally thank you not only for making it possible for me to get into 3D rendering at all, but giving me my only current means of making money and surviving: Neither would have happened if Blender didn't exist, as I wouldn't have been interested getting into proprietary modeling software (especially after moving to Linux).
    I know I may be seen the black sheep while saying this, considering what I create with Blender is not to the liking of some people to put it lightly. If folks can set the theme of my works aside however, I hope this is as much of a sincere and valuable feedback as any other. Cheers!

    He has a strong conviction on what he wants to do (and also what not - "is boooring") and is creative in finding the means and the people to make it happen.
    And all of this to work on a free and open source product that so many people use, this really baffles me every time.

    This man is a saint. Our little shop comes from years of using Maxon and Autodesk. We migrated to Blender this past year and haven't missed a beat. This community rocks and so does the software. The only thing we still rely on for more advanced work is Houdini but we haven't even thought twice about looking back towards Maxon and Autodesk. :)

Why even complicate the workflow by having so many apps with duplicate processes? Just flip the template and keep on working. Brilliant. (assuming I am understanding the concept correctly.)
