Pinocchio now has about 20 awards on his account! The same Puss in Boots 2 does not even have such a thing, I think he deserves recognition most of all because Dreamworks was presented with a masterpiece.

The short stories about Pinocchio were once written to teach children how to behave and to listen to their parents, caregivers and teachers without question. I love how Guillermo Del Toro took these stories, and by placing them in a different setting, inversed the morals of the story: you become a real boy when you make your own choices based on your own life experiences and by trying your best to be good, kind and helpful.

Carlo Collodi wrote the original Pinocchio story in the 1880s. Throughout the story Pinocchio's good intentions are always swept away by immediate desires. He became real after selfish intentions are swept away by the desire to help others.

Unlike Disney's (horrible) live action take on the story, I do appreciate the "lying to solve the dilemma" choice in the writing here. This adaptation is altogether unique in its vision in terms of tone, historical context, message, etc. Especially given the political backdrop and how adults seek to bend and manipulate children to the ideological whims of a fascist regime. Even down to basic free thought and expression, as Pinocchio is labeled an "independent thinker and dissident" as something to be frowned upon, or dangerous. Weaponizing harmless, frivolous lies to escape the whale was a wonderful way to rage against the toxic expectations, to celebrate stepping out of bounds when the world would otherwise keep you in a box.

    • @broadwaybrook2319

That is a very good explanation of the concepts depicted in the movie. Very well put. (On a side note: I agree that Disney's live-action "Pinocchio" was terrible. I knew it was a bad idea from the start when I heard they were going to do a live-action "Pinocchio." Though I do like Tom Hanks and Cynthia Erivo. Anyway, when I saw the teaser trailer for that, I was disturbed at the decision to have Pinocchio be CGI with real people around him.

I also like how del Torro changed up the ending with Pinnochio not becoming a 'real boy' because one of the lessons that is ususally in all of his movies is that you are your authentic self and it is up to people to accept you that way. Pinnochio needed to learn, but he did not need to change in his fundemental being. It also does raise the question Of how Pinnochios life will continue. He is now an immortal, wandering the world. Will he find companionship again? If so, how will he cope with the fact that he will outlive anyone and everyone he cares for? The ending is really tragic in a way, but also much more thoughtprovoking then: And they lived happily ever after

Apparently, "Spazzatura" in Italian means "garbage" (sounds kind of like the Spanish word for trash: "basura"). He literally named his monkey "Garbage." From what Stephanie said about Honest John, Gideon, and Monstro freaking her out as a child: I mean, who WASN'T freaked out by them?! The scariest thing about them is that there really are people out there with bad intentions who will try to get kids to trust them, they're just not talking animals. I think we can all agree that Walt Disney's "Pinocchio" was nightmare fuel to everyone who saw it.

ngl, i cried again during the reaction. i love all the parallels in the movie but i believe one of my favourites is how del toro literally made pinocchio an animated jesus. he even spoke about it in an interview and said “he’s like Christ, he’s made of wood, he has nails, resurrects three times to save those that he loves.” not to mention the part where he's tied to a cross or when he asks why every body likes jesus but not him when they are both made of wood.

"You did bring me joy. Terrible, terrible joy."
I love this movie. My only complaint on an otherwise flawless movie, is the "Lying To Get Yourself Out Of Trouble" bit. It is a terrible lesson to teach children. Disney's "live action" version did the same thing and they were just as wrong.
Fun Fact: The longest stop-motion animated film.
Author Tribute Fact: Geppetto's (David Bradley) deceased son is revealed to be named Carlo (Alfie Tempest). This is most likely an homage to Carlo "Collodi" Lorenzini, who wrote the original Pinocchio story.
Let Me In Fact: Cate Blanchett told Guillermo Del Toro that she wanted a part in this film during work on Nightmare Alley, but the only character that hadn't been cast yet was Spazzatura, the monkey. To Del Toro's surprise, Blanchett wanted to voice the character anyway even though the monkey has little actual lines and spent most of the film making sounds.
Lost In Adaptation Fact: The reason the cricket (Edwan McGregor) is constantly subject to amusing injuries - one of which prominently involving a hammer - is likely a nod to his fate in the original book, where Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) got annoyed by him and smashed him with a hammer, and he spent the rest of the novel as a ghost. Not to mention, Sebastian is basically telling the entire story from beyond the grave.

to be fair del toro made clear that this was not intended to be a children's movie, it would be ok for children to watch or like a family movie but it was not meant to be explicitly a kids movie or marketed as one given the way the movie it is. Which I think is fine, if a kid's watching this version of Pinnocchio, they should absolutely be watching it with parents.

19:44 Even though this is set during WWII, this scene reminds me of the famous Christmas truce during the first World War. It was only about 5-6 months into the fighting, but the most notable exchange was probably between the Germans and the British - singing carols, shouting greetings, allowing dead soldiers to be retrieved for burial, and even exchanging gifts like food, tobacco, and hats. Sadly, the war would continue for another 4 years and truces/ceasefires would become less frequent, fueled by bitterness from the deaths of so many people. But in those 2-3 days of 1914, there was this sort of beautiful moment for humanity, to realize that we are not hostile creatures at heart, and that unfortunately war and hatred are taught to us, usually by those much older. Remember that many of these soldiers would have been very young men, roughly 18-22 years old.
Case in point, a British general who was about 56 at the time opposed the truce. And on the other side, though he wasn't much older than those other soldiers at the age of 25, there was a corporal of the Bavarian Reserve Infantry who also against the truce - Adolf Hitler.

My takeaway from this film was that power of disobedience. Pinocchio aggravates his father to no end because he never listens and obeys like Carlo did. The local fascist leaders want to control him for their military cause and frown on his “independent thinking” tendencies. And the circus ringleader wants him to obey his every whim. But Pinocchio defies all of them. He even inspires others (Candlewick and Spazzatura, the monkey) to disobey the authority figures in their lives. He saves his father’s life by choosing to break the rules. And then finally, because he’s not a “real” boy, he disobeys death itself.

I think it is the ending of this movie that fascibnates me most. Usually Stories end either with: He is now mortal and will life a normal mortal lifespan, or they cut off before you have to ask the uncomfortable question what will happen to the immortal being when every one else is slowly dying around them.
I find it fascinating that this movie doesn't shy away from the reality Pinnochios immortality would carry. One can hope that he finds new companions throughout his existence, but it is going to be hard.

I thought it was going to lead up to that where he uses up all his lives and his final life and also selfless act makes him a real boy! I'm guessing they wanted to give the ending a more realistic or bittersweet feel? Maybe this was how the original story ended like how in the Grimm's Fairy Tale of The Little Mermaid, she dies and turns into sea foam instead of becoming human and marrying the prince.
