    This answered so many small questions I've had (haven't been able to play yet), so thank you! Please tell me you'll be making more! Your explanations and storytelling were wonderful, and I love that you use a map and tokens, which is how players will see the action take place.

    I'm fairly new to D&D. I've participated in a few campaigns over the years, but I have never really dedicated to TRPGs until recently. My group has asked me to be the new DM, and I feel like I'm in kindergarten learning all the basics again. This video was PERFECT! I know combat in D&D isn't super-complicated, but I was just simply getting confused by all the numbers and abilities that applied to a round.
    This explanation was the best one I've seen yet. It made it super-clear, super-easy to understand, and I have a definite grasp on combat now. Thank you very much!

    Nice video! But there is something that I didn't understand... 4:15 at this point, when your turn starts, the goblin is 35 feet away from the paladin, so basically, you have disadvantage rolling your attack because of the javelin range (30/120).
    Thanks in advance!

    • @N00b4qu1
      @N00b4qu1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand that you meant the minimum and maximum range of the javeline with (30/120), right? If that is the case, since the distance is between the minimum and maximum range for a javeline, there is no disadvantage. In this simulation, the goblin is 35ft. away from the paladin, which is still within his throwing range. Were he 25ft. away, for example, the paladin would have to roll for disadvantage, since the given distance doesn't meet the minimum range for a javaline throw.

    • @gabrielsotillo6249
      @gabrielsotillo6249 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It doesn't work like that... In PhB, it clearly says: "A weapon that can be used to make a ranged Attack has a range in parentheses after the ammunition or thrown property. The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon’s normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon’s long range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the Attack roll. You can’t Attack a target beyond the weapon’s long range."

    • @TheNubiS
      @TheNubiS 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gabrielsotillo6249 I believe you're right on all fronts.
      It's a minor mistake, but since it could easily be fixed it's too bad it's there. The goblin should be just one square closer to the paladin, standing in the doorway of the tavern.

    Hey, you made a mistake with throwing the javelin. The goblin runs 30 ft. When he starts running he is not in the same space as you. This means at the end of his turn he is 35ft away form you. You can even count that on the map.

    This makes perfect sense seeing as I've played Baldur's Gate and other miniature dungeon games like Descent. My friends and I are starting our first DnD campaign soon. My friends seem to think that they can just kinda dictate anything they want. I know some DM's run theatre of mind combat - but for instance in this example it seems like my friends would want to be like "well can I try to test my perception or DEX to negate the Goblin's ability of not provoking attacks of opportunity." Or perhaps could they say "well when I hit the Goblin I hit his leg so he should only have 5 speed when he escapes."
    So my question is - how "rule-y" do DMs usually do combat? How does that change between battlemap and theatre of mind systems? Thanks for any input.

    But what about strength/dexterity modifiers and proficiency bonuses?

    • @EmbassyNerdcore
      @EmbassyNerdcore ปีที่แล้ว

      These were pre-calculated into the numbers on the sheet. The Axe for melee uses the Paladin's +3 Str Mod, plus their +2 Proficiency bonus to get a total of +5 to hit. Then when the Axe hits, you also add the same Mod to the damage (+3 dmg). For the Javelin, it has the "Thrown" tag which means players can choose to use their Str instead of Dex when throwing it (As opposed to arrows which don't have that option because you don't Throw them). They still get to add their Str to both attack and damage with the Javelin, and the proficiency bonus just on the attack to hit, don't add Proficiency to damage.
