I love watching Interviews with Bill Kelliher. Not Just because I'm a Mastodon Fan but Also because his musicianship. He's very Informative about his gear and is good with the details not only his playing but just playing in general. I would love to sit down and pick his brain on gear & setting up tone. Very well rounded musician.
I love watching an interview with Bill and then watching one with Brent after. They are polar opposites it seems like but they fit so well together sonically.
Mitch is such a good interviewer. He's kinda laid back, ask the right questions and gets the "interviewee" to relax and open up. Bill is naturally a laid back dude, so this worked out well
Bill's a good example of what a musician is compared to a rockstar. Bill's a fantastic guy, and he's always about the music. And it shows! His gear rundowns and his interviews are always super informative and well thought out, his signature stuff is fantastic and really useful, and the music he writes is interesting and heavy. It's never about ego or image. Bill's the kind of guy that we should all try to be.
The interviewer was fantastic, I don't often (ever? haha) comment on the person interviewing but it's fantastic to see a guy with great questions, proper knowledge on the subjects brought up, and knows when to let the person who they're interviewing just speak. Rock on Mitch! \m/ Kelliher is also my idol. What a dude.
Love that guitar. I have an Ibanez Destroyer II made in 1981-82, which was likely a copy of the Explorer he reworked. I've never found a match, but this could be it! Nice work.
I had no idea that guitar had coil tap in it. That is a beautiful guitar, and I love the single coil versatility. My new favorite looking and sounding guitar.
I am a new Mastadon fan after giving Blood and Thunder a listen a few weeks ago. I fell in love. I remember them when they first came out, but at the time I was still stuck on my 80s metal from my heyday playing guitar in my old band. Of course the 90s killed my band, but I love the 90s grunge and alternative music just the same. When the 2000s came I got into all the new metal, but Mastadon didn't sink in for me. After buying an Orange Super Crush 100 head I started watching Brent Hinds vids and Bill Kelleher vids. These guys are just like me. Lol! I'm in my early 50s and have reinvented myself as a guitarist and I'm so much like these two. I am now a hardcore Mastadon fan and have much respect for the Mastadon crew. Great band for sure.
I love my Golden Axe... My new favorite guitar and the Nitro Hemi's are my new favorite pickups by far. So comfortable to play I love the thin neck... Just everything about it is perfect. I prefer this control configuration I Really don't wanna go back to a regular configured explorer ever again.
Mitch asked a great question around 8:50 or so re: writing heavy riffs but with groove... my buddy's band Orthodox Fuzz is great at being heavy with groove - like if Lynyrd Skynyrd listened to waaaay more Black Sabbath than Allman Brothers LOL - whereas my band Goetic Circle is like if a big black obsidian monolith in the middle of an abandoned graveyard WAS A SOUND. hehehehe
I find it kinda interesting to watch modern band talk about how much they prepare for a show with special voodoo stuff, green tea, playing as soft and relaxed as they can... You think Slayer and Metallica did those things back in the 80's? :)
The problem is both Fender and Gibson USA quality has gone downhill over the years. ESP made in Japan is on another level. Even the LTD stuff is awesome!
Good things that Brendon Small had the silverburst made before Bill, 'cause that Golden Axe looks hella sexier than the Thunderhorse model or the Lzzy Hale one!
Enjoyed the interview..the best interviews are when the musicians are talking gear and just chit charing.....i hate the same boring questions how is the new album coming along, what is it sounding like..blah blah blah. I guess there is a time and place for it, but so many interviews with Mastodon recently have been like that...just gets annoying. Love Mastodon!
So weird to here Bill saying so many nice things about this Guitar ! And Sadly him and so many other feel that Gibson and their management have been going Downhill fast to the point where Bill cut ties with his beloved Gibson's !! I hope he still plays his older ones live on stage that he loves and not just his new Japanese Guitars ??
what's going with james hetfield's voice ?? it is a kind strange in this video. and wheres eet fuk ??? and why the hell the title of the video is Bill Kelliher ??? WWTF
My generation is maybe the last to use the term "records" but it makes sense no matter what format simply because it had to be recorded in order to be played at the discretion of the individual. So get hip to it...........................BITCHES!!!!!!

Both people were an absolute joy to listen to.
Very well conducted interview, both awesome guys.
Legend says the Bills Mustache is the 5th member of Mastodon. :D
this guy is a great interviewer. really interesting questions about songwriting, playing, gear... good answers too.
This guy needs to do more interviews
Who ? Bill? He's done tons of interviews, just type in his name, they're all over youtube
Lifesblood1 I meant Mitch
His precision.... is really precise

I love the way mastodon evolves and have appreciated every step along the way from remission to emperor of sand one of my new favs

Seriously the Mastodon guys are so thoughtful and down to earth. I love watching interviews I’d them.
I love both these guys.
I love mastodon and all the guys including bill are so down to earth. Awesome guys, I hope to meet them one day.
I had no idea that guitar had coil tap in it. That is a beautiful guitar, and I love the single coil versatility. My new favorite looking and sounding guitar.
Does anyone else want this guy to interview them for anything? He's so pleasant, like, I just want to answer questions for him.

i know Bill. nicest guy ever and a true talent
That explorer is delicious
I bought this golden axe a couple of months ago..it soon became my favorite.. great job Bill you designed a winner..
I love to hear him talk about Weezer's first album, I love the one so much too.
great interview. nice looking guitar too.
Great Interview! Great Guitarist, and amazing looking new Explorer!
Great interview, Mastodon it's awesome!

dream guitar.!!!he knows
what a great interview
that was one of the most beautiful guitar i have ever seen
I love this interviewer.
I'm dying to see him play the guitar the way its meant to be played.
Bill is a metal guy
No mention of the Nitro Hemi's!!!???
Bill is awesome.
That Explorer is sick!

Kevin McDonald
Lol I don't know about the voodoo stuff but I would definitely chill out with a cup of tea before a show
I want Bill for president
I wonder what happened to make him go to ESP???
money.
The problem is both Fender and Gibson USA quality has gone downhill over the years. ESP made in Japan is on another level. Even the LTD stuff is awesome!
right on man.... :)
That is a seriously good looking guitar 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😎😎😎😎😎
Bill reminds me of Les Claypool for some reason :p
Brendan Small beat him to the Silverburst Explorer??? Hahahaha
svfutbol20 Yes he did haha. I own a Thunderhorse explorer and it's gorgeous. I would like to get a golden axe to match the silver and gold thingy
Didn't realise how dumb Gibson were untill bill was saying they tried talking him out of building literally the best looking guitar they've ever made.
"When it comes to being precise, I like to be really precise." Bill speaks better through his guitar XD
Is Mastodon a country & western band, because this dude looks and sounds like he's in a country & western band.
Kind of. The other guitarist is 95% influenced by country, but Mastodon is metal. The most interesting and amazing band of all time to me.
Good things that Brendon Small had the silverburst made before Bill, 'cause that Golden Axe looks hella sexier than the Thunderhorse model or the Lzzy Hale one!
he really looks like james hetfield in this interview.
With the mustache and Gibson Explorer
A few years later Bill switched to ESP, saying he now hates Gibson they didnt treat him well.
Wow Big Jay Orkerson got old man
That explorer is the sexiest thing ive ever seen.
+1000 for the first Weezer record. Seriously.

11-52 for A that's crazy
My name is Jonas.
I’m carrying the wheel.
Jaymz?

How is there only 88 views on a Bill Kelliher interview? hmmmmm First!
That is a sexy ass guitar
Bill is the most awesome guy in rock next to Dave Grohl
11 gauge on drop A?? That's something...
Their three tunings are D, drop C and drop C with the low C dropped down to A, so it's not like the whole guitar is tuned that low
1:46 "I just try to lay back and let it naturally come out"...
Ha.
I'll see myself out.
