Thanks so much! No, I have not done the lunch visit. For me, any visit during the day is going to involve the most crowds, so I would avoid that if possible. As for the lunch meal itself, as I say, I think the food inside the Vatican Museums is just ok, nothing special. It's more to enjoy the ambiance. I hope you have a wonderful visit!
I can't believe there are people actually complaining about the size of their breakfast. The Vatican museums rank second in the list of most-visited art museums in the world and there is someone commenting about how big their breakfast was.
I agree, the Vatican Museums are some of the most wonderful in the world! If you've watched any of my videos, you know how much I love them. I visit them often, probably about once a month. I think it's ok to comment on the quality of the breakfast (I doubt anyone would complain about the size, as it's a huge breakfast). I took the breakfast tour so I could give my honest opinion about whether the whole experience was worth it. I think it's ok to think that the breakfast is just mediocre even while the museums are so amazing themselves. They are two different things. In my opinion, as much as I always love the museums, I would not necessarily return for breakfast but that does not detract from the quality of the museums themselves.
I am confused by the ticket experience types offered direct from Vatican and via tour companies such as Walks of Italy for the Vatican. The Vatican tickets, including a breakfast (in March 2024), are 45 euros (20 euros entry + 20EuroBreakfast+5Euro Booking Fee). BUT the earliest you can book any ticket for is 8am, and breakfast 8:30 am. Also, the ticket is self-guided and does not seem to include any shortcut into St Peters. Whereas all of the tour companies seem to offer the 7:15 entry, with shortcut entry into St Peters. Eg walks of Italy offer 7:15 entry, breakfast, and the shortcut in St Peters . but it 99Euros. Which is fine. But why doesn't the Vatican also offer early morning entry direct.
Thanks for watching and commenting. FYI since I made this, there are some changes to what the VM will be offering going forward: th-cam.com/video/77n_TOUv2iY/w-d-xo.html Nevertheless, I think the main thing you are looking for is the best way to take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel into Saint Peter's Basilica. And you, like many people, are looking for this kind of ticket directly through the VM website. For some reason, the VM themselves do not offer ANY tour that includes this shortcut. The only way to take the shortcut is with a tour offered by an outside tour company such as Walks of Italy. So the choices are to purchase a less expensive entry/tour directly with the Vatican Museums, but with no shortcut access to the basilica, or to purchase a more expensive but more complete tour that includes the VM and the shortcut with an outside tour company. @@Romewise Thanks for the update. What we have managed to do is now book a very early standard ticket entry to the VM (8am), and we have managed to get a Tomb of St Peter ticket for just after lunch. Hopefully, that will give us easy access to the Basilica, as I think you end the tour of St Peters's tomb in the Basilica and can then do as you please. So I believe in doing this, we've got the lowest pice tickets you can get - 20Euros for VM, and the St Peter Tomb Tour was I think 14Euros. - and still hopefully avoiding any lines All I'd like to be able to do is also go up the dome in the elevator, but by the time we've done St Peter's Tomb and looked around the Basilica, then dome tickets may have all gone, etc...Love your videos...
That's great! I think you've organised it and timed it perfectly. Make sure to make time for logistics as well as a little bit of rest and food. They don't usually sell out of the dome tickets so you should be able to do that if you want to. It's more a matter of if you make it there before closing and if you have the energy! If you get to do it, you'll have done it all (almost!)! @@RJMCTV
Another great and informative video Elyssa this will help decide whether to have breakfast before the tour starts or take it as part of the tour but the early tour is a must we think.
Thanks, Peter! Yes, I think you could skip the breakfast part although if you include it, it is fun. But the main reason to do this is to start early and beat the larger crowds! Hope you enjoy your visit, whichever one you pick!
We just did this exact tour with Walks two weeks ago and it was great. The breakfast was ok, but we had a Cornetto Crema and Cappuccino at the Bar prior to the tour as you stated. Due to breakfast, you're not the first group in, but the crowds were manageable, our guide was knowledgeable, kept it interesting and we were able to go in to St. Peter's Basilica. I'm glad you covered this as I couldn't find a lot of info on it, but we are so glad we did it.
Had breakfast in the pinecone courtyard last week. I thought it was really good and enjoyed my breakfast! Value wise, I'm sure we could have had breakfast cheaper elsewhere, but I found it to be a fun experience
We did it last December. Long story short…was it worth it? Eh. Kinda. It was cool having the breakfast in the pine cone courtyard as the sun came up. There were only maybe 15-20 people, and the food was decent. Nothing great, but some good protein to start your day..about what your decent hotel breakfast might be. Of course, the reason to do it for us was to beat the crowds. When we were done, we walked over to the hall of the Roman statuary and waited next to the guard to drop the rope. I believe that was at 8:30. He dropped the rope for us about 8:25 or so, so we got about 5 minutes basically alone in that huge hall with all the statues. But the other tourists don’t really come down your way for an hour or more. Depending on what day of the week and month you are there. So was it worth it? Not for the food, and really not like you get too much time to yourself, but if you’re an early bird anyway and you want to see the sun come up at the Vatican in the pine cone courtyard, you’ll enjoy it. Just don’t expect to be able to roam the museum alone as soon as you’re done eating. You still have to wait for the museum to officially open.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, I agree, getting up early and taking one of these tours is worth it for the experience. Less so for the quality of the breakfast, but it's still nice when it's included! I think with or without breakfast, the early Vatican Tours are worth it. It sounds like you felt the same way!
We were there at midday without a guide last Thursday. It was very busy. The queue of people who hadn't booked was about 1/2 mile long. I think the only way to get it not so busy would be to do a tour like this.
We took an extra time tour with the Vatican museums. Our guide was knowledgeable, funny, enthusiastic & managed the time of us entering the Sistine Chapel so well we were the only group in there. The aperativo was great too & because it was after the tour we were all hungry and enjoyed it in the otherwise empty Pinecone Courtyard. Agree the crowds are still manageable in the morning tours but there is far less people in the afternoon after closing.
Yes, the Extra Time tour is one of my favorites! I'm glad you had a good guide. I've done that tour 3 times and 2x I had a great guide, but once, not so much. It makes a big difference! Yes, agree, it's nice to have the Happy Hour after because the tour makes you hungry, plus it's a nice way to end the visit. Glad you had a great tour!

You're so welcome!
Thanks for the great video and honest opinion on the breakfast.

It is! But worth it!

When was this filmed? It looks warm out still
I went on the tour in mid-October and yes it was still pretty warm.
thanks for this!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
I’ll be coming back there march2024. The last time was 11 years ago!
Re Keymaster tour. Do you know if this is going to be available next year? I don't see dates available on the take walks website from January onward
I’m working on finding out. I’ll be making a video soon with all the big changes coming to the Vatican museums in 2024.

Excellent advice Elyssa, Vatican is something everyone should see at least once!
Thank you! Yes, as you might have noticed by now, I am particularly fond of visiting the Vatican!
