The next proper refresh of the Air in 2018 was effectively a 13 inch MacBook. Fanless design, all metal enclosure, butterfly keyboard, Force Touch trackpad, Retina display. The Air moniker just proved too strong and they could never get away from it.

Most of the people commenting shit about this haven't even tried it, I have one and it works really great, I mostly bought it because it´s so thin and weights just 2 pounds and I travel A LOT so carry around this is better than a huge laptop. I use it for normal tasks but also to compile 4k video on the go and it works really great. Never gets hot and it´s so silent. Those saying is a phone with a huge screen are sooooo wrong.

Found a good deal on one of these recently. Price of the air for a broadwell equivalent of an m7 inside. Better than paying full for a skylake one with an m3, imo.

it's actually a wonderful laptop. Yes its not powerful but now if they upgrade it with nicer internals in 2019, it could be great. It needs a better webcam and better mobile processor. I used one for two years and totally loved the size, weight of it and the feel, it was just pleasure to do everything there, and since I don't do heavy tasks on my laptop (the most heavy task is editing photos with Lightroom) I never felt like I needed more power.

I got my 12" MacBook Space Gray yesterday and I am happy with it. My previous laptop was the Late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display which is a strong laptop. However I haven't had any issues with my new laptop so far. So if you use laptop for using MS Office, watching movies (Full HD or 4K), heavy web browsing, light and casual photoshop and video editing, this laptop is the number 1 choice for sure and the power is quiet enough for you. My new MacBook almost have only half of the power of my previous laptop but I don't see much of a difference. I am a heavy user but I am not a video editor or a photoshop professional.
By the way I though my words might help those people who are deciding to get one of these cute, perfect beautiful laptops.

mrcheese917 You are right, but the thing is that you can live without a Retina display, but not all other people can do this. Once you get used to a UHD screen it is almost impossible for you to go back to regular screens. On the other hand the new MacBook has 3 beautiful colors which I really like the Space Gray. Yes MacBook Air is definitely the smarter choice, but we have to notice that this New MacBook is the definition of the future laptops in the world and if you want to run with the highest Technology you have to pay the price. I find it interested how accurate this guys predictions were with the laptop being the forerunner of apples new design. They did keep the fan, but pretty much everything else predicted was correct. Though it does look like the MacBook air held on and won the fight in the end, it got really long in tooth but eventually was refreshed and shortly after the MacBook was discontinued. Now they just need to kill the keyboard they started with this MacBook.
Me personally I think the "MacBook" should have been branded the MacBook Air, and the eventual MacBook Air refresh in 2018 should have been the new MacBook. Basically flipping the two names, keep the ultrabook the ultrabook and still make the MacBook a bit smaller but still capable. Letting the 2015 MacBook be the last device to have a USB-A port rater then the MacBook Air. Personally I think this device would have been better received if it was called the MacBook Air instead, but that is just my opinion.

Honestly, the company was a joke before Jobs died.
They did some great things early on, but the only thing Apple has ever been is the 'great popularizer'. They take existing things, spruce them up a little, and tell people it's magical. That makes those things insanely popular, which drives other companies to make them better, and Apple uses what those companies did, makes it a little prettier, usually makes it thinner, and starts selling the result.
The last great thing they did was making the GUI a standard, the last almost-impressive thing they did was the iPhone, and the last at-least-notable thing they did was the iPad, all of which have now done much better many times by other companies and Apple just sits behind them with lesser products fueled by higher price tags.
      It's actually kind of disgusting...

I was recently deciding on buying a Macbook / Pro for work on-the-go. I had to consider processing power, hardware connectivity, future software compatibility and reliability. Reliability is Apple's middle name so that's done. Future software compatibility is fine due to both Macbook and 2015 Macbook Pro being easily compatible with software I use for future updates. Now, the processing power. I needed something that will enable me to do very processor-hungry tasks e.g. creating mixdowns/bounces, whilst writing documents or browsing the web. The Macbook Pro won that with ease. The hardware connectivity; its obvious the Macbook is tremendously lacking in ports and adapters are flimsy and at the moment, expensive. The Macbook Pro had just about everything I needed in terms of ports to easily connect peripherals. The only thing I was lacking was a CD/DVD writer and burner, but I bought a USB drive to compensate. So from looking at what I need, I picked the Macbook Pro and I don't regret it, even after looking at the Macbook. It is incredibly thin, but for such a small powerhouse, the Macbook Pro is the ultimate in portable audio production for me.

    • @funky3ddy
      @funky3ddy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Aadharsh Pannirselvam Yeah, but that's not the biggest problem. Lets start with heat. They keep on praising fanless design, but as soon as you run a resource intensive application, laptop heats up so bad, you can't keep it on your knees (some reviewers reported). Excessive heat will also result in premature death of your machine (cool processor is a happy processor). A lot of reviewers praise battery life, but as I said earlier, we live in a word of HD content, 1.1-1.3GHz processor in nowhere near fast enough for it, so it'll always run at its top 2+GHz speed, and that is 5-6 hours of real life usage, watching vids and whatnot. Shorter battery life means more frequent charging, and you can charge your battery only X amount of times. Battery (-ies) is not only integrated, it is glued in place, so you can't easily replace it (he should have tried to unglue it, maybe it's glued with a double sided sticky tape, and not with some epoxy-esque adhesive). And keyboard is also glued in place, together with those nasty sticky feeling short travel keys, you better be careful not to spill your soft drink on it. Trackpad is also too big for this machine, there's no place to rest your hands, resulting in unnecessary hand strain. So as you can see, not only is this machine not practical, it is also designed with planned obsolescence in mind. I'm actually surprised guys at CNET are not talking about this.

funky3ddy It also thermally throttles if the CPU is at full load for more than a 2-3 minutes. While modern CPU's can thermally throttle and last longer than almost every other part of the laptop, the throttling makes for lower performance on processes that consistently use a high amount of CPU time.

For that price, you can get a pretty decent gaming laptop that will max out virtually all modern games.
You give up far too much for the macbook, Battery replacement will be a major problem (keep in mind batteries do not last forever. after around 1-2 years of regular use, you will be at around half capacity or less on the battery.
If you have a laptop that is designed around having user replaceable batteries, the replacements are not only cheaper, but you can easily walk around with multiple batteries.
The way the keyboard is attached, means that replacing it will be very difficult, thus if it breaks, it will likely not be a simple $20 repair. The display is completely glued together so any damage too it, means that you are replacing the entire unit (including the housing).
The glue used on the batteries is very strong, and thus when removing older ones, you risk the batteries flexing to a point where they can potentially self short and set on fire if you do not slowly and carefully remove them.

If you want a higher res screen then you will be sacrificing on GPU to stay under the $1300 price point ($1025). Specs will still be far better than the macbook, for example www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Laptop-59425943-Black/dp/B00K6ZIMFY 4K display, 16GB memory,
The rest of the money can then be used to upgrade the storage with the 500GB 850 evo
      www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0ZX2D98079
you can then buy a cheap $10 usb external enclosure in order to use the old drive as external storage)
though you will have an 860m which will mean medium-high settings in modern games.
Other than that, it is very thin, though you give up having an internal DVD drive (and will have to use the external DVD drive if you need to use them)
PS it is not very common to get a retina style display on a gaming laptop as no gaming laptop comes with an internal GPU that is able to smoothly game at 4K, unless you are playing one of those league of legend style games, or are running games on low settings (which will look worst than going with 1080p). Thus they tend to stick with a 1080p display and then put the money into better processing components.

Razor2048 That laptop has great specs and price but many reviews there aren't too favourable... Remember, you aren't buying this to boast specs. You're buying this because you want a computer to use.
Aside from that I see the appeal in having a 1080p screen on a gaming notebook but I would personally prefer a lower end GPU and have a higher res screen.
Oh, and I don't buy into the battery half dying in 1-2 years. Hasn't happened to me before and I've had plenty of relatively modern mobile devices (phones, tablets and PCs) with lithium ion batteries and used them for extended periods of time with no significant loss over multiple years. In the past, yes, that was an issue but battery management these days has been improved so much with the influx of more mobile devices.

I don't quite understand why someone would buy this. What the hell do you do without USB ports? No mouse, no usb-stick, no external drives. Who doesn't need them? Also the processor with just 1,1GHz? Sounds really bad to me, or isn't it? 250GB storage could become quite a problem if you seriously wanna work on this thing and don't wanna have to move your data every 2 weeks. For that price you could get something way better. I don't think a few mm less are worth sacrificing good hardware, performance or temparature. Sure some people prefer iOS and they can do that, but the device itself just seems so unpractical and limiting to me.

No it's shitty an iPhone 6s almost outshines this as a: it does not thermal throttle during normal use (unlike the Mac book) and b: it costs less for a pretty much equivalent power and c: it's thermal throttling problems bring its processor speed down to 1 GHz the iPhones being 1.85 this makes the Mac book a tee able voice when it comes to laptops
