AURORA: ‘I need to be in touch with the ugly things in the world’

- ‘My god, it’s a lot!’ sings Norwegian artist AURORA on her gorgeous album What Happened To The Heart?, talking about all the injustices in the world. We first came to know her as a fairytale-like figure who sang enchanting pop songs about Mother Earth. But, as she explains in this video interview, ‘I don’t want to be a fairy out in the woods anymore.’ Her new work reflects this shift, filled with activism and compassion for children in Palestine, Sudan, and Congo. This is why she feels compelled to speak out as often as she can.
The thing is... Aurora may not know it, but making music the way she does is not something easy or common. Aurora has a gift, she conveys feelings through her lyrics and voice. Few musicians or artists in general can do this and since unfortunately the world is surrounded by money, most artists today end up making cheap and soulless music because it's easier and faster. I'm grateful for her, Aurora brings light to this dark world. 🤍

She does know it. It's why she makes the effort to put herself and her music out into the world as an introvert. As a child someone told her that they think the world needs her music and it would be cruel/a disservice to keep it from the world 🌎. Its a beautiful gift and a sacrifice at the same time, because its not natural for her to be a public figure.
@@RebeccaBeyond It was a request from her own mother. ❤️ Aurora has always been introverted and still is today, but she has learned to deal with it over the years. I notice that she uses a lot of her unique sense of humor to deal with some situations. Aurora is my favorite musician and she won't be doing this forever, unfortunately we are halfway through an 8 album cycle. It is a privilege to live in the same era as her, Aurora is a very special human being.

@@shishi2776 Hmm.. I don't think there's anything like Aurora. I mean, she composes her own songs and sings like an angel. But, without thinking too much, I really like Freddie Mercury. I don't think there will ever be a voice like that. I particularly like Billie Eilish too, even though her compositions are more aimed at teenagers.
Always interesting when these types of interviews are done, how natural and well thought out Aurora's comments are.
Although she often says "I think", "I feel" and "I mean", she still gets to the heart of many people's thoughts. But, thank God, there are more and more artists with the same attitude and message as Aurora. Some are better known than others, but the message counts.
At 28 years old, it's no wonder that Aurora wants to get away from the fairy image she previously had, although it has probably become clear to all fans by now that she is no longer a fairy but rather "Galadriel" just without a ring. 😅 (Think about what Aurora would achieve with the ring of the Elvqueen 😉) -Jokes aside -.
She has become an important voice for the future of her generation that is being heard more and more. Now the big TV channels and live shows should broadcast more of her, then her message would ring louder in the ears of the world.

What insight into herself and the world. She didn’t even finish secondary school! She should have an honorary doctorate (I say this selfishly, because I can’t stand the thought that she should give up recording and performing and deprive us of more of her gorgeous music)!
I think formal education is important for 99.9 of people, but then there is that little small group of people for whom the formal system would mean to kill the best of their hearts and minds. I guess we witness in her one of these very few cases.

She is a true observer, she really looks and listens in a way that most of us do not. Add in that high intelligence and this is the person we see.
Not many artists can create such a beautiful world with their music. She can create this space where i feel so much peace, like things are going to be okay. I saw her live a month ago. I've been to many, many concerts and i never felt like i had to hold back my tears until then. I felt so much joy and sadness at the same time.
Everyone needs to hear this, this is something that the world is missing. We need to care for the people and for the world!!! She is so full of wisdom that this world is lacking! I love Aurora!!! We love Aurora!!!
she can deliver a ton of complexity through simplicity. people can choose what aspect they engage with. whichever you choose, you will be moved deeply by it. Having said that, Aurora mentions in the video that she is now ready to be more political. I very much hope that she prepares herself deeply for that because coming from Norway adds a layer of challenges to that in my view. Artists from Norway need to grapple with the fact that they have grown up in the most privileged bubble in the whole planet. This could make anyone's political engagement challenging. I am sure she will pull it off. She is a different kind of human after all!! But I hope she doesn't underestimate the hard work she may need to invest to see past the limitations that being born in a perfect bubble could cause. I am sure she is fully aware of that and she hints at it in the video in different ways. This is a unique artists with a very unique mind. Bring it on Aurora! Hearts, minds and ears are open for all if it!
I think she long ago worked through these things. I imagine her tours have helped her gain so much perspective on the world. She's not naive. She's the furthest from it, but she has hope.
It's always difficult for artists to have a political opinion. This also means having an influence on people and taking responsibility for them. You can quickly find yourself in uncomfortable positions. A balance on a knife's edge. It remains to be seen whether Aurora has this balance. And how she can handle any setbacks. I hope for the best, but we'll see. In addition, she has already taken up topics that were definitely political and has survived 😉.
I understand what you’re saying, but Norway isn’t necessarily a perfect bubble. They have their poor and needy, too. Not everyone that lives there is rich.

Aurora is the voice we need in this world. Her music sounds like a cross between True Love and World Peace. We need to get the world leaders together and somehow force them to hear her music. She is a gift from somewhere.

Yeah, for some years we've been eating dead TV, dead music, dead connections to ourselves, I feel these empty places as a human and as a person who has suffered from neccesity, I hope that at some point we become massively aware and that big celebrities/influencers can talk about these issues and have a REAL change in this materialistic and insensitive world.

I think lyrics in music can be completely profound and meaningful, even if it doesn't have a political message, becasue lyrics in music can be used to talk about any experience in human life that resonates with someone and speaks to some individual in some important way to them. On the other hand, MUSIC for itself, without any message in text, can also be completely profound and meaningful, and it's completely ALIVE, because the sounds of music speak to the soul. So I disagree with her in that aspect. No one can tell you what YOU need to hear in ART. There are things happening in the world, that are important to know, yes. But you can hear that outside art. ART is for what YOU need, and only YOU can recognize what YOU need, don't accept any other person to tell you that.
