It certainly has done! I hadn't got too involved in community things before with the hobby so that side has definitely become a big motivation for getting on with painting recently
Your audio was very good. I always tend to start a new army with the approach of an initial supported brigade. Say 5 infantry battalions, a couple of cavalry squadrons a gun and command. It always goes larger but it's a good small start to get my foot in the door of a new campaign/period. I enjoyed your video and am now a subscriber. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much for your support :) It's definitely nice to get a good flavour for an army early on in a collection and try a variety of figures; seen too many get bogged down near the start of a project from biting off too much at once
I have noticed in fact that one of the other periods that used to be gamed but now you don't see so much is the War of Spanish Succession. I knew it at first as the Marlburian Wars. It was a precursor for the Napoleonic wars in that it involved much of Europe including Britain, Prussia and France. Big battles, high profile charismatic leaders and results that are reflected in society today. Meanwhile I have a British army in a box 90% painted but never found a club to play at. Then in the 90's I found 40k. I do have the Epic armies to paint however.
I've looked into the plastic figures Warlord does for the War of the Spanish Succession a few times now that you mention it - it's definitely something I'd like to see gamed a bit more. If (or, more likely, when) I start looking at other periods I imagine I'll be drawn in the other direction to Bismarck's wars.

@MiniAgnostic yeah, I prefer Irregular's blocks as they can represent a company or a battalion, depending on your ratios.... Coupled with buildings from Brigade Models, I just have to make the 3.5x1.5m table!
Just found your channel and enjoyed the video. In your summary of Napoleonic wargaming rules you neglected to mention the Carnage and Glory computer moderated miniatures rules. Carnage and Glory has a significant ongoing presence at the major wargaming shows in the U.S. and is the longest running Napoleonic rules set used at those conventions.
Thank you! I can reassure you that there wasn't slight intended towards any rulesets I didn't mention - it was a one minute segment where I gave a quick nod to three recently(ish) updated or released rulesets that represent modern, streamlined approaches to divisional-sized games.
@@MiniAgnostic I didn't think it was an intentional slight and I understand you have the perspective of being British and the most recent, rather than "modern", Napoleonic rules have recently come out of England. That being said while these newer rules do address division sized games the Carnage and Glory system, because it is computer moderated, the system incorporates unique elements such as dynamic changes to fatigue and morale while accommodating games of multiple divisions on each side.

An outstanding video and I look forward to following your progress. I was so pleased you gave well deserved shout outs for the likes of Tim Richardson of Napoleonic wargamer. He and his channel is wht got me finally into Napoleonics. It inspired me not only to get my arse into gear and paint a full British Peninsular War army for that tremendous event in June of this year Under Eagles to Glory. Not only was it my first go at Black Powder but finally fulfilling that dream of having a Napoleonic army. The event hands down and without exaggeration was the finest and most enjoyable I have ever attended. So much so that when March event was announced well it inspired me to build a French Army which is my current project. I've got the Sharp Practice rule set as well which I plan to finalise after completing my Black Powder projects. I recently bought the General D'Armee 2 set as well which I really like the look of especially after watching the Lardy TV videos but even more so from Watching Scott Driscolls channel who really loves the game and does excellent content on his channel. I very much look forward to see your progression as well and are you attending Under Eagles to Glory 2 event?

With something that's been gamed as long as Napoleonics it feels wrong to just jump in without acknowledging at least some of what's gone before in terms of content and those who helped get us into it. Sadly I'm not around on the weekend of Under Eagles to Glory 2 (foolishly signed up to do a half marathon... we'll see how that goes), but if there is a 3rd one I'll definitely try to make it to that.
Another call out is the 'chosen men' rulebook, which is based around 30-50 models in a more skirmish format. It may not be perfect, but it's a nice entry to Napoleonics. Plus you can play as Major Sharpe!!
Another option for those of us who are useless at painting or don't have the time are the 2D pre-printed WoFun Games minis. I have been collecting their 10mm range for the 1813 campaign in Germany. ps your video was a very easy watch
That's a good suggestion with the 2d ones. I haven't much looked into card/paper figures but they're definitely a great option, even if just to try out a different period. And thank you!
Having visited the reenactement of the Battle of Leipzig recently, I was inspired to start another Napoleonic Army so I started with some Austrians. Prussians are also on the to-do list so I will be following this series with great enthousiam!.

Having retired last year and having tried GDA2 I decided to return to Napoleonic gaming after an absence of nearly 40 years 😳. I tend to work in 15mm due to space constraints and so far have completed an Austrian army and intend to paint 4 more armies for the 5 main protagonists. My choice of figures has to be dictated by my reduced budget and I use a mix of manufacturers. I must mention the Fizzer Johnson range , similar to AB and breathtaking detail ,the campaign figures are a real pleasure to paint. Mainly French and British and recent addition of Austrian grenadiers. Unit packs of 24 figures for £13.20 and a good discount for larger orders. AB are currently .85p per single figure so I only buy special units from them. Love the video and look forward to more.

Been painting 15's for about 40 years. Got a mix of Mini figs, Old Glory (bulk of army), Some TTG, and even some bad Essex figs. Got Napoleons Battels by Avalon Hill when it first came out. At this point most were French or pre 1809 Austrians in the Helms. Last year or so have been gearing up in 28mm for Black Powder. Still prefer the shrinking regiments in Napoleons Battles as units lost figs due to combat losses though.
Great video! This period is easily my favorite to play, though the painting investment means I spend more time in WW2 instead. My partially painted Portuguese for Salamanca have been calling to me a lot recently. Great info here, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. Have you looked at the “Et Sans Resultat” rules?
It can be a bit of a slog with the painting definitely. I haven't looked enough much into Et Sans Resultat if I'm honest - I think it was the unit basing which put me off a bit if I remember correctly? I'm more drawn to the painting side of the hobby and so wanted larger units with a base per company rather than just one base to the battalion.
I'd be interested in getting into Napoleonics, but the scale of the painting required intimidates me a bit. Are there are ranges that are particularly easy to get battle-ready?
The two directions you could go in are either working with fewer figures for a skirmish-type game, like Sharp Practice by TooFatLardies, or using a smaller scale of figures. The plastic Epic Waterloo range by Warlord is pretty quick to paint up compared to 28mm figures, or there are even smaller scales like 10mm or 6m you might want to take a look at.
Great Video, thank you. The best figures have to be the AB Figure range. They are 18mm, what Grande Armee 2 is best played at, and with almost all the nations and periods covered. You should treat yourself ;)
AB do make some really lovely figures, I'm on the 28mm bandwagon for now but if I ever do branch out into other scales for Napoleonics they'd certainly be top of the list

The cost has went up in the last few years but plastic box sets from online discount store are the way to go.

The only problem with napoleonic war black powder is that the metal model comes with the infantry and the metal artillery and the metal officer
It depends on which army and which manufacturer you go with - for French, Victrix does a plastic foot artillery set for instance.

The best rules are Empire (now Revolution & Empire).
