YES!!! I was a bit worried when you said charity trip- but I'm so glad its a educational trip. Unfortuntely there are a lot of err... missionary programs where you go and 'build houses' that are so harmful to local communities, such as ignoring local customs, taking away from local business and resources when trying to 'fix' problems, and the when you leave the locals are left dependent on more missionaries, instead of themselves. Educational trips where you are empowering locals is always fantastic! Connecting local resources. I'm so happy to hear this.

I am, however, concerned about the flat situation. There is a great documentary style video here on TH-cam about unscrupulous “companies” that aren’t actually legitimate and will “rent” rooms or homes they do not own but have simply taken possession of while they lay empty. Unfortunately this can open you up to lawsuits by the owners and the supposed company may just skive off with your money. Your best bet is to report the company to the French Police and MAKE SURE you have a copy of any contract this company gave you to clear yourself from any wrong doing. I would also recommend sticking to homeowners who write their own contracts or whom you can speak to via some form of either in-person or video chat to ensure everything is on the up and up before moving in. This is scary because, had you not been a few days from leaving and the owners had come home and tossed you out on the street, that would have been a very bad situation for you.
NONE of it was your fault, AT ALL, but, unfortunately, there are unscrupulous people out there who will take advantage of kindhearted people such as yourself.
You can also lodge a complaint with the Business Bureau if you do believe the company were acting fraudulently.
I am relieved it all worked out in the end.

I feel like you were missing PJs, a towel, a razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, shoes, maybe at least one dinner jacket, some swimming trunks, a pair of flipflops, and moisturiser - I also always bring a canvas bag for dirty laundry. And three of those books could have gone in the big bag. ^^
Also a hairbrush...or the like, some nail clippers... some q-tips... tissues... masks... disinfectant spray... etc

Also, a good option for space (and weight) saving is just a bar of soap and a shampoo bar (also has the added advantage of no risk of body wash/shampoo spilling out everywhere in your bag)

You should buy a "carnet" for the metro in Paris, it comes down to 1.6€ per trip
A little random, but my eyesight is very very bad and I did eye correction surgery this year (ICL instead of lasik cause of my eyesight power) and honestly it was life changing! Hearing you talk about contact lens just reminded me of that. Definitely would recommend for anyone that can't see anything without glasses.
