I was working as an art tutor on a cruise ship and happened to mention to the cocktail pianist that I loved this tune. Each time I entered the lounge he would stop playing and go immediately into Laura, such a lovely moment for me, and I thank him to this day for being so kind

Wonderful story! What's the movie from the 1940's or 50's where that happens (but not on a cruise ship)?

The instance in a movie that I was thinking of was in The Apartment (1960), at 36:27 into the movie. The pianist plays the movie's theme, "Jealous Lover" (an inappropriate title, given how lyrical it is) when Fran (Shirley MacLaine) walks into "The Rickshaw" cocktail lounge.

Somebody, I think his last name was Mallen, said "How can a song about depression make you feel so good?"
I was in the process of copying and responding to him that his comment was the best I'd ever heard about any Karen Carpenter record, but the song ended, the playlist moved on to the next number, and everything was wiped clean. I spent at least ten minutes trying to find him, but couldn't.

A beautiful and haunting score. David Raksin composed for Broadway shows. It was Alfred Newman who encouraged him to come to Hollywood in the 1930s.
This was an opportunity to work with Charles Chaplin for the orchestration of 'Modern Times'. His first composition was for 'Three Smart Girls' in 1936.
In 1944 he had real success with 'Laura' by Otto Preminger and 'Forever Amber' in 1947.
He composed for many films until 1982, his last movie 'The Day After'
    D. Raksin died in 2004, aged 92. At the time of his death, it was announced that He had completed his autobiography, eventually published under the title:
"The Bad and the Beautiful: My Life in a Golden Age of Film Music."

Yes, because the world wasn't @ war in 1944, there were no Concentration Camps & millions weren't being murdered, nostalgia ain't what it used to be & EVERYONE who made this classic are LONG DEAD! If they could still make movies like this today, young Vincent Price would be gigolo boytoy named Shelby being kept by Mrs. Danvers.

A fantastic theme that changes chords many times from minor to major and back. Very much rooted in the dark implicit psychology of this thriller and the mood of the time.
I think it succeeds because it is in such close emotional alignment with the characters. Certainly Alfred Newman who was the master of the 'trembling' string score himself (as in "Song Of Bernadette" from around the same time) improved the proceedings by conducting this.

To support what Soundtrack Fred says above, indeed, all credit goes to the composer in any event. But "classic" movie music such as this is really a cultural artifact that in a real sense belongs to the world, and should be readily accessible. In fact, we should all be able to think of TH-cam as a public media library that anyone with an internet device and a connection has a pass to access.

I agree John. There is , however, the lingering issue of monetization for living composers let alone those with heirs like David Raskin (he has a son Alex). Alex has a job but many composers still make little or no money. The model is broken and it needs to be fixed to a greater or lesser degree. Otherwise musicians will never survive. Making music is work and should be compensated. It is wonderful to having Raskin's work available for the world to enjoy though. Particularly for those who might not have the chance to explore his work in an easy way.

When the theme song caught on, Johnny Mercer was asked to supply lyrics for what quickly became an American standard. Raksin was impressed at how Mercer had seen the film and condensed its melancholy into a few verses. Mercer explained that he hadn't seen the film - everything he needed to know about the film, about Laura, was in the melody. You can't make up stuff like that.
How Raksin created the melody is a story worth looking up, as well.

I read that Mr. Raksin was told by Otto Preminger to create an opening music score in 3 days or Otto was going to hire another to do it. Otto didn’t like Raskin but was forced to hire him by the studio. Plus at the same time Raskins wife wrote him a Dear John letter that she was leaving him which is why it has a sad undertone to it. Heartbreak & extreme stress created this everlasting masterpiece.

Great performances by Clifton Webb, Dana Andrews, Vincent Price, and Judith Anderson. United by their relation to the radiant Gene Tierney.

I will never understand why the music score of this film wasn't even nominated. It's like a mental paradox! and a complete dishonor, having ignored David Raksin like that.

Ah, yes - Alfred Otto Preminger Hitchcock. What a talent he was! However, I think you're confusing this film with "Rebecca," directed by the equally gifted Otto Alfred Hitchcock Preminger. ;)
