No question that EC is a challenge sonically. But I'm not sure dissonance is how I would characterize it. Dense. Tricky. Abstruse. Cacophonous. But dissonance I think of harsh and jarring and this piece is not those qualities. Sometimes his sound world is so genteel and lush and poignant. Listenable? Good lord, yes.
Beyond belief a masterpiece. Frightening how coherent and listenable. I anticipate moments with that same rush of dopamine that only the most iconic guitar riffs used to produce for me.
When one is lucky enough (faith being probably the key component?) To recognize that this music is so incredibly well mapped out, boldly confident, masculine, mystical and nuanced, yeah whatever. Just listen and the hackneyed, trite and ignored advice to leave ones preconceptions at the door will pay remarkable dividends. He is the only composer i can listen to regularly. I still include a few strays from Webern, Babbitt and Maderna. Not even Sch makes my regular playlist.
I own this score. Although not a traditional disposition of the instruments, it would have been wiser to have the strings (the first orchestra viola and bass, the second orchestra violin and cello) with the other instruments of the respective group. I have always found it difficult to follow the score for this reason, having to look down below the solo instruments to find the strings.
Despite the incomprehensible dissonance, there’s something about Carter’s music that is very listenable. 😎🎹

Merci beaucoup pour cette oeuvre rare de Eliott Carter
WOW this is a masterpiece. Thank you, thank you thank you
You're in good company. Igor Stravinsky also said that it is a masterpiece.

Thank you thank you! More Carter please, so many of his scores are absent from YT :)
Carter in the 60ies! Very thrilling!

Mais pourquoi le langage t'a-t-il déserté ?
cooked dissonantly
Thick & inaccessible. Good job Carter
As classic rock goes this is a bit on the prog side and may not find commercial success.😅
Jesus ain't coming!
Not just yet!
