Many moons ago, when I was in the US military, we had war belts too. In the Marines, the powers that be tended to insist on uniformity in where things were placed on your belt and harness, except in a combat zone when you got a little more leeway. In Vietnam, I actually hung my stuff on a belt that went around the bottom edge of our flak jackets and magazines (20-rounders) in bandoliers. I carried a scrounged (read stolen from the US Army) 30-round mag in a flak jacket pocket, plus another in my rifle. This is when I started wearing a USMC K-Bar on my trouser belt when in the field. In the Air Guard, as we were security police, in garrison, our war belts were minimal, but the pouches were worn in a uniform fashion. When in the field, our boss was not picky about how we laid out our gear, although there was a lot of uniformity just from practical needs.
Agree with you there. When one mucker had the best set up we all had to copy them. Exact same with our wardrobes, if it wasn't just right they would empty every single unit and bed. All then made up to be the same down to rolling the socks tight and folding them into what looked as close to a square as possible. If I'm honest I miss those days. Still have my wardrobe and drawers exactly the same at home. Annoys me if my wife puts my clothes away the wrong way 😁
We have war belts again, but it doesn't work very well at the same time as the body armor, because most people's torsos are not long enough relative to the large armor vests. It's fine on its own, though. Love me dump pouch. Love me mag pouches, Love me Vickers Sling.
@@superfamilyallosauridae6505 From my experience nobody wears the body armour up high enough, it's there to protect vital organs not their gut and hip. You can survive a gut shot you can't where a vital organ has taken a round. I wore my vest high. A belt would babe been a pain yet still a possibility
@@salahad-din4114 Yeah, we have plate carriers that sit kinda low for any given size. I'd much rather have it be higher, not only because yeah it's for my chest cavity, but also because I really just absolutely hate having mags on my chest. I go prone and I'm resting on my magazines! Rattling and sliding around on the pouches, and with double mag pouches and pmags they're real fat. But all the ways of keeping mags on the sides of the plate carrier have some wonkiness, be it accessing your dump pouch which also has to go somewhere (and both need to be on the same side for a right hander or left hander). Balance, ergonomics, everything is upset by the lack of a true war belt compatible plate carrier.
An alternative to the bits of tape to keep the ends of straps tidy, use black shock-cord wrapped around twice and tied with a reef knot. When push comes to shove you can never have too many speed loaders so I tried to have one between the ammo pouches like your one, one in a rear pouch beside the cleaning kit and a third one spare in my bergen. We were told to bin the right-hand ammo pouches and replace them with a utility pouch. The little pockets in the lids of the pouches can be used for small items like the water purification tablets in the lid of the water bottle pouch. A paracord loop was useful as a puller on the end of the belt for pulling it tight in wet/muddy/icy conditions. I fitted another paracord loop between the rear attachments of the yoke with a piece of clear 6mm bore pvc tubing on it that served as a handle for easily grabbing the kit and moving it around when it wasn't worn. A utility strap threaded through the backs of the rear pouches was another item that helped hold everything tight as you ran.
@@MilitaryFitness Similar mods can be done to the bergen (rucksack) for making it easier to handle during stops. Based on L85 right-handed rifle use. Drill a hole in the tab of the right shoulder strap adjuster and thread paracord through it and tie knots to produce a cord that is easy to grab with a tired gloved hand. A hole is already present on most Virtus packs. This cord enables very quick release of the right shoulder strap for quickly removing the pack from your back and dumping it to your left (fire position with left arm still in strap). On the pack's hip belt (may or may not be used on Virtus!), thread a paracord loop into the end stitching of the belt, as for the webbing, for pulling it tight in slippery conditions. Similarly, to identify the end of the strap for re-tightening the right shoulder strap in the dark and wet, fix any kind of toggle or ring that uniquely identifies it amongst a forest of straps and buckles.
I was in 77-84 58 Pattern Webbing, Coldm Gds/ RMP. Like many 'Olds' everyones webbing was packed identical. Especially Commandants March & Shoot, Pirbright Guards Depot and pre-exercise kit inspections in battalion. Got to say, those standards weren't used in the RMP. Then the only addition I had was a Bundeswehr small pack with survival kit, extra dry rations/ drinks, Hexi burner, folder spade, KIP sheet to make a temporary shelter when dropped off to check convoys over bridges/ major road junctions, after all anyone can be uncomfortable. Tinned compo in my day, the best.
I was RAE and RACMP in the Regulars (78-85) and Infantry in the Reserves (77 & 86-87) so same era. We had to carry certain items regardless but once out of training it was up to the individual digger what he carried. The layout had to conform but you could bring stuff like a US poncho liner slipped into the groundsheet like a bivy bag if you managed to scrounge or swap one off visiting US troops. We used to sell them kangaroo feathers and drop-bear repellant (tubes of vegemite) for some great bits of kit. They loved our golok machetes. Of course when there was the annual kit inspection anything you didn;t have and couldn't pass from line to line as the boss moved along you had to pay for.
Just watched your video, with the contents of your webbing. I was original issued 37 pattern, with only the small pack for load carrying. Large pack moved with rear echelon. On being issued 58 pattern, supplemented my kit with a 44 pattern water bottle, mug and carrier. I used to get a load of gear in the kidney pouches, including the old tinned 24hr compo. Mess tins, washing kit, housewife, polish/brush, socks, towel, Hexi stove, KFS. Also carried the respirator on the belt. Poncho in its carrier, with a second one for our NBC suit. I don't know if we were expected to be out longer than you lads, I just don't know. Very interesting video though.
@@MilitaryFitness ,right now I understand that would make sense. We only had the 58 pattern large pack. When we got issued the DPM rain jacket, that went into the poncho roll, with the poncho, going into the back internal big pocket of the combat jacket.
Love this webbing set. Its right up there with my Canadian 82' Pattern webbing, slowly piecing together an unissued set where the camo isnt heavily faded and distorted.
I didn't have to do this too often being in the senior service (yes, I know!!) but never seemed to get it right. You have a great stash there. Will keep you going for a while.
Word of advice to everyone watching don’t pack your webbing like this unless you are in the scouts, this is supposed to be your fighting order and he’s got things such as a sewing kit and a med kit that couldn’t treat a grazed knee let alone a T1 cas I could go on…
Hello, just a few questions 1. Is it a good idea using the molle belt system for my pouches, it's a similar system to yours 2. So you have like a few websites for the rear end pouches 3. Is it possible to add 3 ammo porches per side because ill use a 90 ltr for day/2 day stuff(its for airsoft) 4. Should a mk.6 helmet be alright for a helmet with a scrim possibly(has to be DPM) I am an aircadet with fair knowledge of packing(i did tensors which you may of heard of from the armed forces due to them supporting them) and will do intermediate field craft the the cadet varient of the L85A2 so it's good to have this kit ready, personally i might take a S10 gas mask for mainly aesthetics as it was in gulf war(or atleast a simular gas mask model)

Hi Sam, A question. What is the NATO NSN number for your wider belt ? as I saw it had an NSN/Contract label on the inside of the belt. I am thinking of getting some pouches to do some walking in the local hills (Pennines) to carry mess tins/Hexi cooker or a Crusader Mess set, tarp , med kit and a few other bits and pieces if I overnight . I am an ex-serviceman (84-90), however I am now 55 and just had a Heart Attack,(6 weeks ago) now doing Cardio Rehab. I am fairly fit, not overweight, obviously not as fit as I was carrying an SLR or LMG (Bren) with 58 webbing,etc as in the past ,so going to take it easy getting fit again with any weight on my waist/hips instead of my back with my normal Bergen, which I normally take out onto the hills.

Nice webbing mate, I got me a secondhand webbing from ebay, that came with 2 magazine pouches, 2 utility pouches also I was thinking about buying 2 canteen pouches to fit on, could the utility ,magazine and canteen pouches fit on a medium belt??
Who doesn't like the AB Brown, although it's got some competition for the garibaldi. Giving the '58 pattern water bottle a plastic mug was such a dumb idea. God knows how many people swapped it out for a '44 metal one.

I have a deep desire to join the army and on application at 16 I also received a bricklayer apprenticeship. I took the apprenticeship and since the last 10 years I've earned plus of 800/1000 a week. I want to join the army but feel its not possible as a 31 year old making currently 1000/1200plus a week weather depending. Maybe t.a do you have any t.a information? Thanks
You will not make that money until much later on in your career unfortunately. It certainly is something to have a real think about to see if it is worth it.

Where did you put your gas mask? We used to put elastic bands round the handles then round the mess tins stop them rattling, also put a decent piece of sponge in our water bottle to stop it sloshing on a tab during the night. During infantry training the cpls used to do their nut, if one mucker made noise he could hear from our kit we all got a beastin, no cam sticks eather?
Really interesting. Back in the early 70’s we trialed plastic webbing is was a f*ckin nightmare as it kept coming undone. Pleased to go back to old stuff. Nothing like the smell of wet webbing😄

Resi should be in it's separate pouch and not attached to the belt. This allows you to carry it around without having to lug your belt kit about. We had to have them on us all the time in the early Telic tours.
Half of that gear should be carried on your person, ie pockets of trousers and smock. Should have a minimum of two water bottles carried on there, I mean one of your bottle pouches is full of stuff that should be in your smock. Torch in your first aid kit? Not even a first field dressing anywhere? I really hope you are not giving advice to any youngsters.

Preparatory training for deployment, to sort out what works and what doesn’t, so you’re telling me you go on exercise with that shambles of a kit to train and then deploy with a different setup? Everyone says how good tinned rations were. I think I had the last of it whilst it was being phased out. Pate and tinned fruit 😂

You won’t need 3 ammo pouches per side and generally we don’t use scrim on helmets any more

Don’t wear respirators on webbing any more as there was no need for the last campaigne. Probably may go back to it if we went into Russia

I got this webbing 20 years ago when MTP wasn’t a thing. The army won’t re issue you things in a different pattern if they don’t have to.
@@MilitaryFitness Thing's have changed a bit since the late 70's then when issue 58 kit was all we were allowed to wear with no alterations or alternatives, bloody awful kit in wet conditions.

Resi should be in it's separate pouch and not attached to the belt. This allows you to carry it around without having to lug your belt kit about. We had to have them on us all the time in the early Telic tours.
Half of that gear should be carried on your person, ie pockets of trousers and smock. Should have a minimum of two water bottles carried on there, I mean one of your bottle pouches is full of stuff that should be in your smock. Torch in your first aid kit? Not even a first field dressing anywhere? I really hope you are not giving advice to any youngsters.
